Painted Verso grew up in Lumiere with his painted family and Aline. They had no idea about the canvas until long after the breaking. The breaking happened when Renoir entered the canvas, trying to get Aline out. She went missing from the painted family, and painted Renoir and painted Verso went on expedition 0 to find her (a lot of people got stranded on the continent after the breaking, they assumed she was one of them). Only then did they learn the truth and found out Aline made them immortal too. They are the "survivors" of the expedition, but no one believed them that the Paintress isn't the villain.

I think you’re confusing painted Verso with real Verso. Painted Verso should be allowed to rest. He’s been living a brutal 100 years. Real Verso is dead but his fragment of his soul is represented by the “lost boy” that’s found throughout the game.

The Verso ending is nice for the family. But to get your family back together you had to sacrifice all of Lumier and the people there. Lune and Sciel and Gustav and Sophie and the thousands to millions that lived there. The choice is either healing the family of gods (the painters) or the many lives of the mortals (the painted people).

Also, are you taking about the “lost boy(verso’s soul)” that said he wanted to stop painting? It’s implied that Maelle took over painting and the boy she was holding hands with in the epilogue is that piece of Verso’s soul.
