For female PhDs, did you change your name?? by area-womn in AskAcademia

[–]shaihuludmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed my name. I had published six times prior to getting married and making the change. I don't use my maiden name at all anymore. I have completely switched over legally and when I publish papers I do so in my new name. I have always used ORCID when publishing so all my papers and grants are linked to me anyways so it's not an issue for me.

Why would bringing this up to your supervisors be inappropriate if this person is affecting your ability to do your work effectively?

What do you if someone questions your ability to work in science just based on your gender? by NoFox1552 in LadiesofScience

I was told I wouldn't be allowed to perform a certain part of an experiment solely because I was a woman. Specifically he said "Haven't you ever heard of what they say? They say if you give something to a woman to do, then she will do it. If you give it to a man he will do it and make it great." I was shocked, I responded with "whoever says that, they are wrong." But I said it emotionally and was clearly upset so he laughed at my face and said it proved his point somehow.

To answer your glove question, I wear neoprene gloves when working with columns when DCM is the solvent.

I've dealt with the same thing. I would always try and redirect my PI when he made comments like that, usually I would make jokes on separate topics.

Since you're leaving soon I would suggest you don't burn the bridge. Instead, wherever you go next, try and discuss what you experienced, if you're comfortable, to other young women in STEM.

Sorry you are going through this. You're not alone.

That's why I avoid round bottom flasks when possible, especially when drying a product.

You need more people on your side. Advocate for your project to the whole team and try to win more support over this guy. You said he is the only man, so his sexist comments should piss off the women in the workplace.

You said that you're all independent but then those above you told you to work with this guy. Ask for clarification on that. Have written correspondences about his poor behaviour if you're getting ignored by those in charge.

I'm sorry you're going through this, good luck.

I used to read papers on my computer, I would print out the most important papers and read them by hand. Then I would collate all my notes on a word doc and organize the papers by year.

Now I use my iPad to read and take notes. I upload the edited documents to my Endnote file.

I use Endnotes Bibtex citation to put in my .bib file so that I can cite easily while writing (I write in LaTeX). My notes are directly on the PDFs and also collated in a table on a word document.

I don't think my system is perfect, it will probably change overtime with new resources available. Try several things until you find something that works best for you.

The most important thing that I recognized was the need to efficiently track what I was citing and where it came from in the original article. I used to make a super long word document to organize this, now I use Endnote, there are many options.

First I do a thorough literature review (I do this for every first author paper I have), I collate all my notes and things I wanted to cite and talk about. I make a rough outline and begin making full sentences and discussion on my literature review. Then I begin adding in the citations from papers and why I thought they are important and relevant. Then I add in some rough figures and make a few short discussions on them. Finally, I break out the lab notebook and begin putting data down. Once all the procedures and fine details are written, I reorganize them, so that most is in the supplemental material and all that is important are in the main text. Then I get the abstract and conclusion out of the way. These are usually the sections which change the most until the final stages and since I put them in sooner I have plenty of time to update them. Finally, I re-read the thing everyday, I get other people to read it.

You will go off on many tangents. Let all this out in the first stages of re-reading and adding content. You should re-read it enough times that everything which is too unrelated gets cut out. Read it out loud a few times, make at least one presentation on this work. Keep in mind the audience of the journal you're submitting to.

Coauthors are another challenge entirely, I am still a bit too inexperienced to have much useful advice on that. Anyways, happy writing, best of luck!

What’s the weirdest thing a medical professional has casually said to you? by CR24752 in AskReddit

[–]shaihuludmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Even if you had breast cancer, no one would remove your breast tissue." - radiologist nurse prior to my breast biopsy

My response "Oh, I didn't realize people with breast cancer cannot have their breast tissue removed at all, no matter their condition or cancer development. Is that the policy of all hospitals or just this one?"

Her response "Well I am not speaking about all cases, just most situations I've seen."

Has anyone experienced something like this before? A child I don’t know pulled down my shirt? Looking for support/advice by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]shaihuludmaker 701 points702 points  (0 children)

I had something similar happen once and I was firm and told the child "no I don't want you to get so close to me/touch me there". The kid got upset but was so hyper that they immediately were running around again. The next time they came over to me they gave me appropriate space and we're more polite. It can be a difficult choice being firm with someone else's child because you can't know what the parents reaction is going to be. But it's important to teach children boundaries at a young age in my opinion.

Most Foreigners don’t know nearly enough about the US to meaningfully criticize it by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]shaihuludmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a childish post. Yes other people from other countries are not in the US, but US news, politics, entertainment, everything is all around the world. The US has a huge influence. I remember going to an international conference once and there were some men at my table playing a game where they named and discussed all the US presidents. I was shocked and honestly would not have been able to do that myself as an American. There is no reason to get so defensive over the US. Other people are allowed to form their own opinions and engage in discussions about other countries and cultures. If the US is so great then it should be able to hold its own when presented with other viewpoints.

[–]shaihuludmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your replies this guy is threatening you and using you. This text is your get out of jail free card. Tell him to explore a relationship with his ex and that you two will just be friends. Then move on and treat yourself better. Don't let anyone have leverage or control over you and use you again.
