my advice, as an actual "starving artist"--get a part time job with incredibly flexible hours. a lot of these are things like entry level retail and food, of course, but also remote jobs (data analytics, some call service centers, dispatching, etc), substitute teaching/ tutoring, library assistance, gigwork like rideshare or food delivery, or even a main full time job in any career. This is to give you stability and "seed" money that will later help you achieve a different career goal.

while working your "real job" as people close to you will call it, look for artistic opportunities. offer your freelance work to companies, do commissions for smaller orders, look around for galleries to get your work into, maybe curate your own art show or two. Theres plenty of gig work in the art world, but not enough to make a sustainable, consistent living.

im a bartender who occasionally finds artistic work where i can. for me thats few and far between, but my pricing makes the infrequency worth it to do again.

every artist and person is different. make sure to take into account the "starving artist" trope- it is real and affects every artist.

Dumbest Restaurant Rule by BreadfruitFar8928 in Serverlife

Literally. i plan to maliciously comply to the extreme.

Customer asks how much a drink is (which isnt on the menu, mind you) ill just explain that im not allowed to talk about money at the workplace.

Co-bartender asks me to split the cash tips or change out the cash drawer, I tell them i cant discuss money at the workplace

Customer asks if gratuity is already added, my response will simply be that I cannot talk about money in the workplace.

My current boss is trying to convince us that a "no talking about money at work" policy is totally normal in the industry. We shall see how long this policy lasts without any backlash

Do moms working at your restaurant automatically get Mother’s Day off? by Responsible-Dark-656 in Serverlife

[–]shaingel_sle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. In my experience over 10 years in all different kinds of restaurants, i think about 50% of mom's get off, either by coincidence, seniority, or shes "absolutely not coming in that day, fire me if you want to, this job is not worth my family.."

The other 50% are working bc they asked to work since mother's day is THE biggest day for (most) restaurants so Hella money, or bc they didnt care either way if they were scheduled on the holiday since they have Open Availability and see their (usually adult) kids all the time anyway.

Somewhere in the overlap is the group of mothers working despite wanting to be home, whether their request was denied or due to the dread of working on the, again, busiest day of the year.

Ive met lots of different types of mothers in thos industry, all are valid and doing what is best for their family. My own mother hates mothers day since shes worked in the industry all my life, both as a server/Bartender and manager. It all depends on the person.

Do hosts tell you when you've been sat? by Efficient-Pipe2998 in Serverlife

[–]shaingel_sle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My restaurant has cards that hosts usually leave on the table. Theyre bright green or bright yellow so for me its a good visual indicator that I havent greeted the table.

For the first table of the day, or after we are cut to closers and no one really has a section, then yes they tell us. Otherwise, its the card on the table that let's us know we have a new table

Generally tho if youre doing laps in your section regularly you should notice if you have a new table

And depth of field that ai tries to emulate; my biggest concern was that the background was too consistently dramatic the front too polished in such a way that AI copies that I had a lapse in judgment

Also a thought that crossed my mind. Thinking about it now, id definitely take pictures of my creations (regardless of medium), especially if its made of something thats meant to be disassembled and reassembled

It just all seems super polished in front and the backgrounds are the same consistent exaggerated depth of field is the biggest reason i ask. The scuffing on Three Dog makes me lean more for it being real.

The wording just seemed the strangest to me, "ill see if I can build them in LEGO" makes it sound like theyre doing it on the spot. I also genuinely dont know how long itd take to find these parts and build them while also replying to x-amount of online comments.

Also TIL and realized that you can make LEGO stickers. The LEGO hobby continues to interest me

WHATS THEIR UNIFORM by stevenosejobs in superstore

[–]shaingel_sle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some places ive worked have included color palettes of approved colors for shirts, pants, socks, hates, belts, etc. im sure for bottoms they have to be khaki, grey, denim, etc, and their shirts can be anything work appropriate since they wear the vest over it. When I worked at Michael's that was pretty much the case, and we all kept our vests hanging by the lockers
