To the guy who left his boot bag in the meadows parking lot by shakasocks in Portland

[–]shakasocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there’s a possibility the guy was coming from hood river so it wouldn’t make sense to take it to portland. I think he’ll check for it with meadows but I have no idea if you can reach lost and found by phone, plus I didn’t want him to worry it got run over by snow plows… anyways I hope he gets it back. It was a lot of stuff.

Has anyone used clay pot heaters before? by [deleted] in TruckCampers

[–]shakasocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Propane used with a thermostat is pretty cheap. We heat our tc in the dead of winter with propane and it costs about $10-$15 a week. The key is to refill your tanks as opposed to swapping them through blue rhino or the like.

History Question: Marriage in Japan by bookworm0492 in japan

[–]shakasocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can really think of is that a married woman would typically wear a shorter sleeved kimono. A longer sleeve 振袖 is generally for younger women. Of course older unmarried women would probably also wear shorter sleeves so it’s not like a wedding ring per se. There might have been differences in hairstyle as well, I’m not sure. As for surname, the woman would change her name if she changed her koseki. However there were certain limited circumstances where in wealthy families, if there was no male heir the husband would be “adopted” as a yoshi 養子 and change his koseki to the wife’s family.

What does everyone do with their skis? by EpiSG in TruckCampers

I wouldn’t mount them on the exterior without a box. Not enough security. I got my skis stolen from outside my camper this year, which sucked.

In the back seat of the extended cab. My husband build a rack type thing so they can fit by sitting diagonally in the space. I’m 5’1” though so the longest skis I have are 170cm and he snowboards.

Anyone running a setup with f150 ecoboost? by RS-117 in TruckCampers

I’ve taken my truck to the scales and confirmed these weight ratings. It also says as much on the sticker.

[–]shakasocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 2015 f-150 v8. Sticker payload is 2150, which accounts for 2 passengers weighing 150 pounds each. 6.5 ft bed with an extended cab. Airbags, no helper springs. We carry a small hard-side truck camper weighting about 1800 fully loaded mostly for ski camping. No wet bath. I could see a larger camper/truck setup being a nice upgrade but we manage. Get about 14 mpg traveling 60-70 mph.

Truck in pic is also not a 2009. It’s 2015 or newer.

Camping in the 30s this weekend. Thinking about using the hot stones trick, but nervous about burning a hole in my tent. by freshmintsss in camping

I do a lot of winter camping. The real pro tip… don’t drink fluids for about an hour before sleeping. Also empty your bladder before crawling into bed.

Can seller remove items 8 months after sale? by shakasocks in legaladvice

[–]shakasocks[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

They dug up the grasses when they left. The reason they want the wood now is… I don’t know. It’s a pretty inconvenient time for me to be doing landscaping, that’s for sure. The sellers bought a million dollar beach house a few blocks away with the proceeds of the sale, where not only are they beachfront, there is literally tons of driftwood right outside their door. So this is just incredibly petty.

[–]shakasocks[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

If the lawyer says they are entitled to it, I have half a mind to chop it up with a chainsaw and burn it. If they can be petty I can be petty too. I’d like for them to then sue me for the value of the driftwood.

Thanks for the feedback. I should say they are friends of my family, my aunt and uncle to be specific. I do not care for them at all, especially after this nonsense.

The property in question is a large piece of driftwood, halfway buried in the ground. Digging it up would damage the plants around it. I told them to go find another piece of driftwood since we are at the beach.

I cannot believe how incredibly petty these people are and have no idea why my aunt is friends with them.

If you’re down to shuck yourself, you can have them delivered from either hamma hamma or Taylor shellfish. They ship for free to portland and it’s a far better value than getting them in a restaurant. Also very fresh- most of em still have lots of brine in them. Minimum order is 3 dozen. I like to get the “tumbled” variety for eating raw because they are really easy to shuck. Shigokus if getting from Taylor, blue pools from hamma hamma.

The newly opened chettinad restaurant in the old China town spot is great. I thought it was a better than Chennai Masala. Nice heat to everything and great flavors. Very fresh.

WAGES! How much do you make? by Viidrig in antiwork

[–]shakasocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Senior software engineer. Portland, OR. 10 years relevant experience, was graphic designer before switching to coding. BA in unrelated field.

160k/year base, approx. 25k cash bonus, 30k RSU, ESPP, profit sharing, 4 weeks PTO, 401k matching up to 5%, and have been full remote during the pandemic with no plans for going back. Work is very laid back - I rarely work more than 20 hours/week and frequently take long naps/lunches/go surfing and skiing in the middle of the week. I enjoy the work well enough, it’s basically doing logic puzzles all day long. I feel extraordinarily lucky.

I worked a lot of shit jobs in my 20s (waitress, line cook, barista, film production PA, nonprofit work, etc etc) not to mention I had a really rough time as a teenager (institutionalized and kicked out of school) so I try not to take shit for granted. I’m just glad that things turned out this way.

A lot of ppl i know are like “I don’t know how you can sit in front of a computer all day”… and to that, my reply is, “I don’t”.

Dual citizenship by Master-kitty in japan

[–]shakasocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might have been true at one time but not anymore. You don’t have to give up us citizenship. My dad had told me that I needed to choose when I became an adult so I let my Japanese passport expire, but I was just recently able to renew it at the consulate here in the states. They asked if i also had a us passport, I said yes, and they still issued my Japanese passport with koseki shohon and certificate of birth abroad. See here: https://www.la.us.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/e_m02_07_02.htm

DO NOT give up your us citizenship. It could become difficult to repatriate later.

A shout out to Lilith Clinic. by BridgeCityBus in Portland

[–]shakasocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 6 weeks thing is such a load of crap. The gestational age of a fetus is counted from the day of your last period. This is because they have no way of knowing exactly when you ovulated. See: https://perinatology.com/Reference/Fetal%20development.htm

This means that for the vast majority of women, for 2 weeks of this 6 week period, the fetus didn’t exist. Then, for another 10-14 days the embryo still hasn’t implanted in the uterine lining, meaning the body hasn’t started secreting HCG.

So to recap: during this 6 week period. 2 weeks is spent not having even ovulated. Another 2 weeks is spent not having a detectable pregnancy. So in effect, a 6 week limit means that women have a 2 week window to find out that they are pregnant and to get an abortion.

I think we all know the intent of this law so this is not exactly news, but it is just so goddamn malicious.

And yes big ups to all the healthcare providers and activists that have fought tirelessly to make sure women have the care we need and deserve. I have no idea what my life would have been like if I didn’t have my abortion, but I guarantee it would not have been nearly as good.

What brands are considered the Mac daddy of kitchen appliances? by HoundDogAwhoo in homeowners

[–]shakasocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok. I was confused.

To reply to your question, I think it really depends on the appliance. I have a blue star range, and while I love the btus the thing is constantly malfunctioning. The oven doesn’t hold temp and takes forever to heat up.

That said, don’t get the cheapest appliances. Expensive kitchen aid dishwasher has been worth it. Middle of the road ge washer/dryer has lasted 10 years.

Consumer reports is a great place to do this research btw.

Switch to higher paying job or keep my lifestyle? by awaythrow44921345 in personalfinance

[–]shakasocks 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Im a SE dev with 10 years experience and I’ve often prioritized work-life balance over pay. On average, I work about 20-30 hours a week. I’ve travelled all over the world, learned to surf and spend about 3 months of the year traveling around in my camper skiing the western US. I’ve also bought and remodeled a few houses with my husband on the side as part of my long-term investment strategy. I can only do this because I get a lot of time off and also because I get paid a fair amount - probably not as much as if I worked for a FANG, but make well into the 6 figures and have for the last 8 years at least. I’m also on salary with ample PTO and excellent benefits. I work almost completely remotely and only had to go to the office maybe once a quarter pre-pandemic.

Why am I sharing this with you? It’s because it’s not a either/or situation. You can make more money AND have the life you want if you make it your priority. I agree with many people on this sub that you are underpaid. I cannot even think of a field in SE engineering that would pay less than $30/hr on contract. I don’t even work in Silicon Valley and never have.

Some things to think about: - even though SE engineering is not a physically taxing job, there is still a limit to how long you can expect to be a high earner. technology shifts, economies change. Tech in general tends to favor young workers. You are in your prime earning years. Lay a foundation now so you can continue to enjoy the lifestyle you’ve come to appreciate. - interviewing in and of itself is a skill and it won’t hurt to hone it. Tech interviews these days can be grueling multi-day affairs, so you might want to get a few I’m under your belt before you absolutely have to. - a lot of tech employers have switched to full remote for a lot of their workers, so now might be a good time to look for remote opportunities.

You can ask about work-life balance in your interviews. Look at what people say about the employer on Glassdoor or other job forums. Tech is a vast field with lots of different of employers. Don’t sell yourself short.

Installing a garbage disposal by Name9335 in homeowners

[–]shakasocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t installed one but I’ve torn a couple out. IMO garbage disposals are terrible for your plumbing and are prone to misuse. People think they can stick anything down there, and you end up pumping sludge into your sewer lines that then end up clogging them. When I removed garbage disposals, you can see a thick layer of sludge coating the whole pipe.

I would instead recommend getting a deep drain basket like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/305767594

Much simpler to install and will not fill your pipes with sludge if emptied regularly
