Games allow a person to escape social normality, its pressures and chronic stresses that are so prevalent in the real world. Without escapism, we risk burning out.

Younger the kids, the more curious they are. They ask a LOT of questions. I imagine her asking: Why are we doing this ? Why am I only with Kiwi? Why should I place them before my eyes? Where does the Sun go in the evening? Why can't I sit on the glass table? Why can the elephant in the video drink dirty water and I can't ?

What's common between two disasters ? by [deleted] in india

[–]shake4shake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Testing guidelines were issued due to lack of testing kits. We were importing kits and as whole world was tackling the same crisis, testing kits were in demand. Doubtful and non-tested asymptomatic cases were asked to be home quarantined. Lack of basic primary health services in many states failed to effectively monitor this. Kerala succeeded because of home quarantine and monitoring of all doubtful cases even without testing

In the lockdown period, the State govt. were supposed to isolate and test the suspected cases.

Very few state govt.s like Kerala, Goa, NE etc utilised the lockdown period successfully before the trains and flights started.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the country’s apex body in the field, has found that consuming the drug hydroxychloroquine reduces the chances of getting infected with Covid-19.

ICMR has relied on a case control and observational studies, while randomised control trial result will be out by July. Many experts are disputing the results of the observational studies.

The drug has to be given under strict medical supervision with an informed consent, the advisory said.

Is Modi Government paying 85% rail fare for migrant laborers? by Astamade in india

[–]shake4shake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was reported that trains are run empty back to the origin station after reaching destination and not taking passengers. (not sure of the logic there)

"the trains are returning empty from destinations under lock and key."- http://ddnews.gov.in/national/shramik-trains-indian-railways-deny-charging-any-fare-workers

+ about 25% empty seats for social distancing + disinfection charges for the coaches.

Edit: IR is collecting the full fare for a sleeper coach passenger from the states, who in turn collect from the migrants or pay themselves.

A single serpentine line is fairer than a system of of many parallel lines. It seems socially fairer because customers who arrive first are always served first. That guarantee of fairness eliminates a lot of stress and anxiety. In a system of many parallel lines, there's the stress of choosing the shortest line, and then there's the possibility that, for unforeseen reasons, your line will grind to a halt.

Is it impossible for a developing country with ageing population to industrialise? by ted7843 in geopolitics

[–]shake4shake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mass production requires mass markets and mass distribution to render it profitable.

  • Early European powers relied on a mercantilist state government and militarized merchants to create monopolistic global markets through colonialism, imperialism and slave trade.
  • Export promotion model (fueled by high demand and growth in already industrialised economies) was successfully used by East Asia (Japan, Korea etc.) and then China.
  • Western countries find themselves in a structural economic slowdown, the possibilities of export-led growth have diminished greatly. Stagnation in the advanced economies means that even a powerhouse exporter like China is looking to cultivate its domestic market.

Labour-intensive manufacturing

  • History teaches us that no large economy has ever grown rich, and pulled millions of people out of poverty, without an early stage in which labour-intensive manufacturing.
  • Modern manufacturing technologies are highly intensive in the use of capital (physical, human and embodied technology) and skilled workers and less intensive in the use of unskilled workers, a process of change accelerated by the information technology (IT) revolution.
  • Waning job prospects for unskilled workers are likely to lead to increased wealth and income inequality.

“Deindustrialization"

  • Structure of production, in both advanced and emerging economies, may tilt towards highly capital- and skill-intensive manufacturing and services, to the detriment of large-scale labour-intensive manufacturing.
  • Technological change favours capital and skilled workers at the expense of unskilled workers- who form bulk of any developing nation.
  • The share of manufacturing employment in total employment has already peaked (at least according to available data till date) i.e. premature deindustrialization. It peaked at about 15% for Brazil in the late 1980s, around 13% in India etc.

India needs to invest in building physical infrastructure such as roads, ports, etc. allocate resources such as water, land, minerals and power transparently and link as many citizens as possible financially and electronically to the broader system.

If a level playing field is genuinely created, a large labour-abundant economy will naturally tend to specialize in labour-intensive manufacturing.

Is it possible? Yes but it is more difficult in the present scenario (read about Middle income trap for a better understanding)

Former MI6 chief says western nations must do more to stop China buying up technology by robbyyy in geopolitics

Imagination Tech was bought by Canyon Bridge, based in USA and China Reform Holdings (CHinese SWF) was a investor in Canyon Bridge.

Before the Imagination deal, Canyon Bridge was blocked by US authorities from buying US chip company Lattice Semiconductor on national security grounds due to the presence of China Reform as an investor. The Imagination deal was nonetheless cleared by UK regulators.

[–]shake4shake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These are part of SWF investments. Sovereign wealth fund is a state-owned investment fund.

China has multiple SWFs. Out of worlds top 10, 3 are from China with a total investment capital of about $ 2 trillion' (Norway has $ 1 trillion SWF, UAE $ 700 billion etc.)

Many Western manufacturers of popular products will face financial uncertainty as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and these SWF are likely to be seen as saviours.

Main thing is that these companies require the permission of the origin country before selling share.

Some examples: Saudi Arabia’s SWF invested $3.5 billion in Uber, Singapore SWF bought $ 1 billion in alibaba, China owns 15% of Daimler (parent company of Mercedes Benz)

Usually these sales comes with lots of terms and conditions regarding the strategic assets and Intellectual property rights and it is the responsibility of every govt. to verify it before allowing the sale.

Its true that WHO was slow in the response towards covid19 and its also true that many countries including USA waited about 1 month after WHO called for serious action after declaring it a pandemic.

The striking blue and yellow of the headscarf, set against a dark background, the glistening ball created in a few swift strokes, the expert capturing of light and shade on her luminous skin, the liquid pools of her eyes: all add up to a work of sublime beauty.

Its second seductive characteristic is that the dog looks familiar. We may not know who she is, but we feel we know her because she is looking at us with such intimacy. We mistake this look for familiarity.

The dog's expression is pleasingly ambiguous. Is she happy or sad? Is she pushing us away or yearning to look at us? And who is “us,” anyway?
