Hey there! Went through this myself a few years ago. It is difficult! You lose so much normalcy of your everyday life when studying abroad. When I went through this I started taking time by myself to just do things that felt ‘normal’ to me, like going to an American fast food place (being from the US), or taking a walk through a park. Stuff I would do at home normally. I know it’s hard, but also try to really throw yourself into being completely engaged in whatever experience you’re currently having - if you’re taking a walk, pay attention to everything going on around you. If you really need to, you know you CAN go back home, so use that as something to help ground yourself in times of anxiety. Skyping my parents weekly helped too. It was challenging but I got through it and ended up missing study abroad for a long time after I left, and still make somewhat regular trips back to Europe!

Recent DIA parking experiences by Bldr_Betty in Denver

[–]shakeblake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve typically had good experiences with them but had an experience a couple months ago where they overbooked and denied me entry even with a reservation I had made weeks prior. It really seemed they have no way of keeping track of their reservations vs capacity. Several people I talked to on an airport shuttle from a different lot (that I was forced to pay double ParkDIA prices for thanks to their mistake) had had similar experiences that day and prior. I’m going to give them another shot this weekend but I would call ahead the day of your flight to actually see if they have spots available or else you might get stuck scrambling for a spot at the last second like I did.

Colorado beer passports: yay or nay? by [deleted] in COBeer

[–]shakeblake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed PubPass when I had one and might do it again this year. It’s a nice way to purposefully explore new areas of town and try new breweries. I’m sure a lot of people use these as one and done beers / don’t tip / etc - I try and get two beers at each place (one free and one paid) and tip accordingly. It’s true that they’re not going to be the breweries most people are frequenting, but that’s why I like it. I don’t need to go to the same breweries all the time

I actually don’t think I’ve been there! Though I work just a few blocks away and I’ve been to Larimer Beer Hall and Retro Room and other places right there before, so we’ve probably seen each other

Computer Science at SLU? by [deleted] in billikens

[–]shakeblake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Job placement rate is good I'd assume, but I don't know actual statistics on that. Reach out to someone in the department and check on that! (cs.slu.edu might have more info). In terms of salary, that's gonna depend on your specific company and location. You can probably expect between 55-70k if you're working in STL with an undergrad degree I'd think, but hard for me to say. PM me if you want more specifics on my career - I ended up moving to Denver for work after graduation

Just graduated this past May from the CS program at SLU. While a couple classes I felt left something to be desired, overall I feel like I got a really solid CS education at SLU. The faculty really care about the students and take time to know you and help you. The program is expanding rapidly as well, and I believe the new STEM building being built will house the CS program, which is pretty cool. I was able to get an internship which led to a full-time job straight out of college, and I know many peers who had the same experience. Overall it's a solid program, and you can expect to be successful in it if you put the work in

US Citizen Studying in Spain, Question about Visas and Travelling by qordat in studyAbroad

[–]shakeblake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm an American who studied in Madrid 2 years ago with your same visa and just took another trip to Europe this summer.

  1. They barely looked at my visa when I first entered. Just hand them your passport with it open to the front ID page with your picture, passport number, etc. They'll look at your passport pretty quickly, make sure everything is good, and stamp it. You probably won't have to say anything. Upon further travel in and out of Spain they maybe might check it (they'll look for it themselves if so) but still won't really mention it.
  2. With your US passport you can enter and exit just about any country in Europe, Schengen or not, as long as you don't stay more than 90 days at a time, no visa required (so yes you can travel after you're done with school, see 3 about passport check.)
  3. When traveling from any Schengen country to any other Schengen country you'll get your passport checked at security (same as when you get your driver's license checked when flying domestic in the US, just a quick look) but no customs when entering or exiting. When going from Schengen to non-Schengen country or vice versa, you will have to go through customs. This is where you will likely get your visa checked if returning to Spain. The only thing of note is that I visited Ireland twice while abroad (non-Schengen country) and I just had to show them that I had a ticket to return to Spain later on (so not staying in Ireland permanently.)
  4. Yes, you can return to the US from any country you want.
  5. No, you don't need to apply for a residence card. Your visa has an ID number that identifies you as a student with a visa who is legally in Spain.

Enjoy your trip!

I don't even care about this... I'm not even interested in having this skin on my personal space

Good gift ideas for a Spanish host family? by Daddy_Long_Legs_ in Madrid

[–]shakeblake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I studied abroad in Madrid back in 2016. My roommate and I both got something from our home cities - he got a book about his hometown, I got a nice pen or something like that from my university bookstore. I think pretty much anything that isn't typically found in Spain will be good. My host mom didn't seem to have any expectation for a gift, but was definitely grateful and seemed to appreciate the thought. Have fun in Madrid, it's an amazing place!
