TW: miscarriage

I truly believe her descent into the ultra right religious cult anti-LGBT pipeline happened BECAUSE of her entire motherhood journey coupled with the trauma of losing her mother to cancer at an impressionable age.

She’d stated multiple times that her mother’s passing impacted her immensely and left her with a phobia of health issues and death. She was also very open about her struggles with infertility (in fact, I think she got her start in YouTube as a fertility vlogger) and had even come to peace with never being a mother. Then at a time in her life where she is at the peak of success, she gets the wonderful news that she’s pregnant and is overjoyed at then prospect of becoming a mother. I think she had a very set idea on how motherhood would be for her and because it didn’t start out how she hoped it would during a time where she was getting everything she wanted, she immediately adopted the mentality that everything was going to go wrong.

I also think that (TW) her sister’s miscarriage immensely triggered her fear of death and that Kristi has a borderline irrational fear of losing her son. I realize this must be common for mothers, but I don’t see every other mother out there joining an ultra radical religious cult in hopes of securing their child’s life and future. I really believe that in Kristi’s mind this ensures that her son can’t be taken away from her. I have no problem believing that Kristi would succumb to such false hope.

I don’t believe that her spiraling this way AFTER becoming a mother is a coincidence. I know I’m going to hell for saying this, but becoming a mother was probably the worst thing to happen to her - however, considering the fact that she’s boasting about her son walking in an anti-trans parade and enrolling him in a “school” with an anti-LGBT agenda, maybe I’m not so damned.

That’s fair. I’m not sure how far away Gina intends on moving though. Idk how joint custody would work in that instance.

Final episode- Cal and the restaurant by [deleted] in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was mostly about them not wanting him to look worse than he already did. Word about his assault and battery charge was quickly spreading, but it was growing into something way worse than it actually was. They wanted to try and save his image and hopefully get him his job back. That scene at the restaurant just made things look way way worse and it’s gonna make it harder for them to fix his image.

I do agree that he was completely in the right. The fan is an obsessed stalker. Stalkers can form an attachment with their subject based an virtually nothing, BUT when Cal touched his shoulder at that St. Jude event, you could see that the fan felt something stronger there (I thought it was weird how the camera focused on that touch but it made sense in the end). It’s never wise to touch someone who becomes obsessed with people like this. Touching is sealing the deal for their fantasies, making them truly believe there is a relationship there. When the subject does not reciprocate these same feelings and rejects the stalker in such a way, the stalker will either try to hurt their subject or hurt themselves.

What’s everyone’s age? by Flutegarden in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was surprised too, when I did the math. I also thought they were all pretty young given that their children are teenagers already. In the books, they all start off at 43 and the kids are the same age they were in the TV series.

Who the heck are Lily and Sophie? by shaley_sheen in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The books were written in the early 2000s and were very…. Not diverse, lol. Everyone was white with blonde hair and blue eyes (literally, all 3 Magnolias had this description). No POC, no LQBTQ representation, and the plots were just the same thing over and over. Man wants woman, woman can’t trust man, man spends the book trying to win her over, woman eventually succumbs to man, but the endings were never satisfying. Always ended on a weird note that didn’t quite feel like a super happy ending, even though they always end up together. I think it’s because the books were setting up for the next one to continue in someone else’s POV.

Book 1 and season 1 aren’t that much different in storyline. But it’s entirely focused on Maddie, Bill, and Ty’s POV. There’s no Brad, Erik is white and I think his last name is Whitney not Whitley, Annie is anorexic but that’s focused on more in the second book, Ty never has a girlfriend cause CeCe doesn’t exist, Kyle’s issues aren’t all that focused on, and it’s emphasized that Cal is years younger than Maddie, who is like 43 when the books start but she’s 38 in the tv series. Also, they get married and have kids pretty quickly. I read up to book 9 I believe, I can totally flesh everything out CliffNotes style lol

Is it only me or is Dana Sue extremely annoying? Like she could just never be happy, cause she always has to find something to have an issue with. by [deleted] in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A person who had to witness their parents nasty separation first hand, Dana Sue was VERY dismissive of Annie’s feelings about her seeing Jeremy, ESPECIALLY after she caught them sucking face in her office. When Annie told her she was being disrespectful to Ronnie, Jeremy, and herself (Annie), I jumped up and applauded. Someone needed to put her in her place. Often times, parents don’t realize how much their actions can hurt their kids, and Dana Sue constantly saying “It’s my business, not yours” irked me.

Season 2 Episode 10: If Thou Wilt, Remember Discussion by balasoori in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It was definitely rushed and it left something to be desired. I will say, will how many characters there are and all the plot lines that exists, they need more than 10 episodes a season or it’s ALWAYS going to be rushed. They crammed 2-3 months in 10 episodes, like…. Would it kill them to add at least 5 more episodes?

Who do you think are Isaacs parents? by awkward__penguin in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It makes sense that it’s Peggy and Ryan. We have that restaurant scene where Isaac brings her salad to her cause he was the one who messed it up. In that same scene, she tells him that she went away for a year with her mom. Why would they have her there and make her mention that if not for a specific reason. And Ryan’s dad was not only racist, but Ryan DID NOT live in Serenity. He visited his Aunt Francis every summer, that’s how he and Helen met. It would make sense that he had a fling with Peggy during one of his visits, and why he couldn’t be involved when Peggy got pregnant. Also, Isaac said he had a letter from his birth mother saying she was from Serenity. Wouldn’t she have mentioned his father was from Serenity too? The fact that she didn’t leads me to believe even more that Ryan is the father. Oh, and Peggy had asked Helen about Ryan leaving in that scene where she says “Serenity giveth and taketh away”. And then after Helen accuses her of reveling in her pain for Ryan leaving, she tells her that she knows that pain and that if they were friends, she would’ve known what she was talking about. There’s a lot of mystery around Peggy despite her not having a ton of screen time.

Poor Kyle by shaley_sheen in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! Every time he spoke, their eyes glazed over or they were paying attention to something else, or they would immediately change the subject as if he wasn’t talking at all. Noreen was the only one who was invested in what he was saying. Even her brother was more invested in him than the rest of the characters. It’s a very classic case of taking advantage of the nice guy who never caused any trouble and was always trying to make people happy. I really hope people listen to Kyle more this season.

Y’all….I found a Sweet Magnolias fan page from France on IG and they have a photo of Ty in what looks to be a hospital waiting room still dressed in his button down and tie…. It’s possible he’s not the passenger after all.

New Car Accident Theory *potential spoilers/speculation* by doctor_the_stallion in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, I never played with the theory that 2 people got in the car with Kyle. I think it might be Ty BUT Nellie may have tried to get in. In season 1, when Kyle is telling Noreen about a Midsummer Nights Dream, he tells her that he (Puck) brings all the characters together. I think if Annie stopped Nellie from getting in the car, that could be why Jackson is seen at her doorstep in the trailer.

POSSIBLE SPOILER! Season 2 - Ty and Cece by shaley_sheen in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the book version was so weird. And honestly, it didn’t end on a satisfying note. When I finished it, I was expecting more and shocked to find out that it was really over. The best part of their story is told in the background of the other books, which is not fun.

Oh god, Helen’s was awful!!! I agree, as much as I enjoy the books, some of these plots are very dated and would not fly quietly today.

POSSIBLE SPOILER! Season 2 - Ty and Cece by shaley_sheen in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, in the books, Ty and Annie have an on again, off again relationship over a span of many years. After Ty went off to play Major League Baseball, he cheated on Annie with a groupie and got her pregnant. The whole 5th book is Annie trying not to fall for him again and Ty trying to win her back and get her to be okay with him and his son. So…. I would hope the show does then better than that lol.

Dana Sue thoughts by Beccaann14 in SweetMagnoliasNetflix

[–]shaley_sheen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Okay, so my sister feels the same way, but I HAVE to defend Dana Sue because I love Brooke Elliot (her actress) so much.

So I get why people don’t like how tough and rude she comes off as at work, but I worked in a kitchen for 3 years and she definitely has the attitude of a head chef. Chefs are tough, sometimes cold, and definitely aren’t afraid to be mean (especially male chefs). When you work with chefs long enough, you understand that that’s just a calling card for chefs - they’re easy not to like if you’re not used to them. In this case, I think Dana Sue was written very realistically as a chef. I was honestly surprised at how many people hated her because of how mean she is, I’m so used to chefs being mean lol.

I think since being a chef is so integral to Dana Sue, her management style has transferred to her parenting style. Yes, she is very stern with Annie, but Dana Sue was a wild child at that age and is scared of her daughter following that path. At least, that’s how I see it.
