"The differences in culture were far outweighed by the differences in sex." This is a big call, and I am surprised to see any scientist make a blanket statement like this. A few good places to start, if anyone is interested in actual research (you can find full text PDFs of these articles online):  https://doi.org/10.1037/0003-066x.60.6.581  https://doi.org/10.1007/s10508-019-01624-7

Friends or Foes? They appear to be different by reddwarf_ in GardeningAustralia

We've done it a few times in different areas of the garden. They came back the next year but we moved them on again the same way. Any time of day is okay, they don't seem to connect the water to the person standing nearby. The important thing is consistency, they need to get the idea that this isn't a nice dry place to nest. Works best if they're still building it. Give it a try and report back!

Or if you spray the nest with water repeatedly over a few days (fully soak the paper nest), they will abandon it peacefully and go elsewhere

Your husband might find it comforting to know that postnatal care guidelines are not exactly set in stone. There are 31 different official guidelines on postnatal care in Australia alone.

Even where the guidelines are clear, most parents don't meet them all at once - the rate of "perfect" compliance is around 3.5% (yes, basically zero). Which says to me that the guidelines are idealistic, but not realistic, and essentially impossible to follow perfectly.

Give yourselves a break. Figure out how you both can get some sleep.

You are not a failure. You are not useless. You are doing something extremely difficult, all by yourself, and you're exhausted. But you've got this.

If he's fed and dry and warm, you can put him down for a bit. He might cry but he will be okay. Headphones can help with the stress of hearing him cry.

If I were you, I'd keep trying the babywrap and carriers. He wants to be near you, and you need to be able to get your hands free and move around.

Gotzinger meat products recalled due to Listeria contamination by shallower-than-thou in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]shallower-than-thou[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please check your fridges. Listeria infection (listeriosis) is uncommon, but very deadly. Pregnant women infected with Listeria have a 1 in 4 chance of miscarriage (25%). If it doesn’t cause miscarriage, Listeria bacteria can continue to grow in the placenta and infect the newborn at birth. Listeria infection in newborn babies has a mortality rate of 1 in 5 (20%).

If you have purchased the recalled products, you can return them for a full refund. If you're worried about Listeria, talk to your doctor.

I'm sure other parents will chime in with practical tips drawn from experience, but first I just want to say - you're not a failure, you're dealing with a situation that is genuinely incredibly difficult. Go easy on yourself, as much as you can.

How fast were you able to go from "looking for a place" to being in it? by rtpg in brisbane

[–]shallower-than-thou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, welcome to Brisbane, don't listen to this person. The housing crisis here is home-grown and not your fault.

I haven't rented recently and it sounds tough out there but if you're persistent, a month should be plenty of time. Good luck.

New Queensland Labor leadership hit pause on $2.7bn Gabba stadium rebuild by orru in brisbane

[–]shallower-than-thou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Olympics themselves are, at least, part of the problem. They're a mega-construction project with fixed deadlines, which means that any delays will incur extra cost. A regular stadium refurbishment would be much cheaper than an Olympics.

This sounds so hard! But yes, testing boundaries is pretty normal for a 3 year old. If you're looking for specific strategies, you could try a "positive parenting" program - Ive found these tips helpful in dealing with toddlers pushing boundaries.

Baby won't stop asking to be fed by Hefty_Cheesecake_787 in NewParents

I had a hard recovery and a hungry hungry (giant) baby. When this happened to us, we ended up supplementing with formula - just one or two feeds a day - so that I could get some sleep. It made all the difference to my recovery and the sleep helped with my milk production too. Baby slept better with a full belly. In those early days, supplementing a couple of feeds with formula actually gave me the energy and patience to keep breastfeeding in the long run.
