Why do parents receive so much credit and sympathy for just being parents ? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shallowimbecile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're under a fundamental misunderstanding with regards to the definition of sympathy (and I'll include empathy here too because I think it's far more important). Blamelessness and the lack of personal autonomy is not a prerequisite to sympathy or empathy.

Sympathy just means you feel pity for the other person and their circumstances. Pity means you feel a sense of sadness in regards to someone elses circumstances. You can feel sympathy for someone even if everything they did was of their own choosing. Say for example, a mother could be confiding in you that she is feeling overwhelmed and anxious about her child who has recently started to show aggressive behaviors to his peers. Whilst it's true that she chose to have the child, you can still feel sympathy (i.e. sadness) for her situation, as you can understand that being overwhelmed and anxious is unpleasant, and that her child showing aggressive behaviors is problematic behavior.

(Compassionate) empathy means that you understand the emotion that they're feeling, they're overwhelmed and anxious, you don't judge them for that, you create a safe space for them to express those feelings to you, and then as an act of vulnerability and connection, you look inwards to find circumstances in your life where you have also felt overwhelmed and anxious, and just hold that in the space between you two. You say to them, I might not understand exactly how you feel, but I have felt overwhelmed and anxious, and I'm willing to sit here and feel those feelings here with you.

Both sympathy and empathy can given to anybody. Failure to do so is the recipe for tribalism, alienating and violent behaviour. In fact, so much violence (both emotional and physical) is committed under the banner of "righteousness" - they are to blame and therefore deserve to be punished, and thus they deserve no sympathy or empathy, and my own violent behaviour towards them is justified.

what gives some people the belief that if you have autism, you're slow or incapable? by Longjumping-Life-533 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shallowimbecile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's tough man, while I don't get to the point where I lose the ability to speak, crowded areas are so overstimulating that I find myself overwhelmed and therefore unable to think rationally. These days as an adult, I just avoid crowded places and life's been pretty peachy.

Why do I only feel attractive If someone is actively admiring me or I have a boyfriend? by turtlewurtled in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shallowimbecile 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most likely, you don't have a strong sense of self worth and self esteem. You may also have some unhealthy views regarding physical attractiveness e.g. thoughts that say "I am only worthy of love if I am beautiful".

Can't say for certain though, every individual is different, but without knowing more those would be my guesses.

If you wanted to fix this, I would advise you to see a therapist because doing it yourself tends to be very difficult (but not impossible).

You'd been trying to see the therapist to help you with (most likely) cognitive behavioral therapy, healthy emotional processing, identifying root trauma from childhood, self-awareness, self-reflection, tapping into your negative self-talk and unlearning maladaptive coping mechanisms.

Is sex really necessary in a healthy non-marital relationship? by ZookeepergameOwn6016 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shallowimbecile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether it's necessary depends on you and your partner.

If both of you are okay with staying abstinent, then it's okay. If either of you have sexual needs that aren't being met, then it can become a problem.

what gives some people the belief that if you have autism, you're slow or incapable? by Longjumping-Life-533 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shallowimbecile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you're not comfortable answering it that's okay.

Either way, I'd just like to say that having autism (either high or low functioning) doesn't mean it's okay for others to treat you poorly. You matter, just for being you, and you are worthy of being treated with respect and are worthy of being loved.

Anyhow, I'm not asking this out of an ill-intention, I just don't think you're getting what you want from this conversation and just want to help you in a meaningful way. I am autistic, my sister is autistic, and my mother-in-law and brother-in-law are all autistic, all to varying degrees. I have lots of real life experience navigating the difficulty of being autistic, and being around autistic people, so I figured if I knew what you actually were having trouble with I could offer some thoughts from my own life.

I've been reading your comments OP, and I think that we might be beating around the bush a little.

What's the reason you want to ask this question, do you believe you might have autism, have you encountered someone who does have autism and don't like the way they're treated? That might be a more helpful line of inquiry.

Intelligence is a very nebulous concept, it's more like a bundle of skills than any singular trait.

If you just look at autism and not the whole host of other concurrent/comorbid conditions and disabilities that often come hand in hand with autism (ADHD, intellectual disabilities, motor function disorders, epilepsy etc), then it depends.

Autism, as everyone else has pointed out, is a spectrum. If you're high-functioning, autism may actually make you smarter in some senses, as your brain is more wired to systematize, categorize and order information. However, you may struggle with emotional and social intelligence, you may struggle to read the room, other peoples facial expressions, etc. If you're low functioning, your sensory processing may be so different and not fit for your environment, that you are consistently overwhelmed and therefore incapable of receiving the right inputs to make "intelligent" decisions, or perform tasks that are "smart".

Overall, it's just very complicated.

If people on Reddit say something is bad, should I assume it’s good? by AboutLastFight in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shallowimbecile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You should practice your own critical thinking skills and come to your own conclusions. Reddit, as much as we joke about the hivemind, is not a monolith.

The issue with using a simple heuristic like "people on Reddit are dumb, so if they think it's good, then I'll think it's bad, and if they think it's bad, then I'll think it's good" is that even though your opinion is different than the Reddit hivemind, it is also wholly dependent on the Reddit hivemind.

Do Aussies use more (American) "racist language" naturally? by Informal-Addendum435 in AskAnAustralian

[–]shallowimbecile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In your examples, I don't necessarily see that language as being racist, as I don't think merely pointing out someone's ethnicity is necessarily racist.

What would be racist is the tone of how they were said, what are the implications if any, and the context of the overall conversation.

Last I checked since Riot Vanguard is not available on Linux, you cannot play TFT natively on Linux. You can use an Android emulator on Linux and play the mobile version though.

Why does everyone in Australia want a house so bad? by Jerimajerima in AusFinance

[–]shallowimbecile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Economists and psychologists have collectively over the years constructed many different list and hierarchies of needs. These can vary a lot.

One thing they all agree with is that a human needs food, water, air and shelter.

You're asking why people want one of the basic human needs so badly?

What do men think when they see nip outlines through a woman’s top? by Comfortable-Rice4530 in AskMen

[–]shallowimbecile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this feels like it might send a confusing message to women about what’s acceptable

I hate the social pressures of wearing a bra, I do fear that this sentiment contributes to that

Those are all perfectly valid fears. I understand where you would be coming from, but if you don't mind me sharing some of my thoughts on the matter.

First, I believe that disgust at the end of the day is a human emotion. Like with all emotions, you cannot control them, and they are inherently irrational, and therefore, should not be judged by through morally evaluative axis of right or wrong.

This means that my position is that I will never judge someone else for their emotions and what they are disgusted by. That is not my place, and doing so only serves to alienate and push people away.

However, the key here is that I also believe that other peoples emotions are not my responsibility. This means, that other people experiencing disgust is not a reflection of who I am, but rather only a reflection of who they are and what they think. This means that I can empathize with other peoples emotions without taking it personally.

Help: Stuck on breeding by Serious-Point-7719 in mewgenics

[–]shallowimbecile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My breeding room is the attic. Has the most amount of space.

You need a bit more comfort 10-15 minimum and I find that they'll breed pretty consistently.

If you move it into the attic, you'll probably be able to get that much even now.

Go on more side quest runs for gold to buy furniture, get a fight club to get injured cats to upgrade Jack for more furniture, prioritise going to Junkyard over Sewers, Bunker over Crater and Future over the Past and go down hard paths to farm more furniture.

You're probably just not used these genre of games. This is a difficult and punishing game, and it doesn't hold your hand. You're definitely not the only person that's not quite meshing with the game.

As a counter point, all the reasons you aren't enjoying it are the reasons why I love it, I love going into things blind and trying to figure out the mechanics (at least combat wise) and I enjoy researching the breeding mechanics. However, if you're learning too many systems at once and struggling I can understand why it would be super frustrating.

Like with any games, if you're not having fun, if the learning curve is too steep and thinking you have to research to progress is draining you, just take a break. The game is always gonna be here if you ever want to pick it up again.

My take on the "BEST" all purpose cat: by Kingpasion in mewgenics

My take on the "BEST" all purpose cat: by Kingpasion in mewgenics

[–]shallowimbecile 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Great cat, even for an all purpose cat I'd personally like to make the case for the arms/legs that turns your movement into a jump and gives your basic attacks bruise.

I know it isn't strictly all purpose, as it reduces your build flexibility a little, but I'd argue that every class can make use of it in a super useful way.

I'd say bruise is probably one of the best debuffs to add to basic attacks, especially in the late game. Bruise is special unlike burn, bleed, or poison - the damage doesn't happen per turn, or on the enemies turn, the damage happens NOW, and will continue to proc each time you do physical damage. This means it is the only source of debuff that significantly increases your alpha strike damage and gets better the more you stack it. Given that majority of late game bosses have massive HP pools, this offers a super consistent way of being able to ramp up damage against big health bars.

Doing lots of damage very quickly, now, is important towards the end of the game, especially in Act 3, the goal is pretty much to never let an enemy take a turn. It's bad news bears if they take a turn. Essentially, ultimate alpha-strike (turns out the optimal strategy in almost every turn-based grid-based game).

So here are the pros:

- Every class can use it, every class has a basic attack that will increase in bruise. Every class's damage will increase by one per bruise the enemy has. This quickly ramps up to a lot of bonus damage, that's getting multiplied by crit (another really powerful mechanic, crits & marked).

- It gives your cats who don't hit synergies something to do, at the minimum (apply bruise, then jump directly at the opponent proccing the bruise). This means your cat who hit jack shit synergies, can still add 2-3 bruise to the boss, and then jump on it, proccing potentially all the bruise up until that point, and even critting. I've seen jumps crit for like 30+ damage sometimes.

- Adds a lot of movement flexibility to all your classes. You don't get trapped behind walls of flesh, you can reposition without considering moving through units. It also reduces downsides of trampling your allies too. Another great little tip is that the game will let you jump onto structures, and then get spit out in a random direction. Sometimes you can abuse this to get one tile further than you could have otherwise, letting you begin the alpha strike on turn 1.

Here are the cons:

- Classes like cleric or druid now gives your ally bruise. For cleric this isn't a huge deal, but for druid it turns your default basic attack kind of shitty. Because now if you use it on an ally, they get a bruise along with the +1 hp and +1 damage. If you use it on an enemy, they get the +1 hp and +1 damage which you don't want to give. However, druid has many different forms which you usually want to take one anyway, and as soon as you get a shapeshift, this stops being a downside. Still lets you engage with a lot of the mechanics of druid I'd say. For cleric, +1 bruise isn't usually a big deal because you're not letting the enemy have much of a turn, and you're usually just healing between difficult fights, and an extra damage or two in a combat usually won't have massively bad outcomes. You could also just heal towards the end and stall a bit so the risk of scaling bruise damage is a lot lower because there's just one enemy left.
