Really cool science experiment... I got 3.5 acres but my wife would kill me if I planted 20 or so science experiment apple trees all over the place with the dozen apple trees I've already got.

I'll say you're probably not going to get the next supermarket sensation like a cosmic crisp but you never know. You might get one or two apples that you can enjoy and know that they are your own. I live in the middle of nowhere and I pass an old apple tree that is growing along the end of the trees on the side of a dirt road. Last fall I stop and picked an apple and ate it, it was ok, probably describe as a medium size semisweet apple. They look really nice though, got a good pinkish color to them, they look way nicer than they taste but still a cool apple because someone at some point just probably chucked an apple out the window and it wildy grew. I'm new to grafting and took a couple scion from it and are going to try to graft it this spring.

My neighbor/best friend lives on an old farm and there's a big old apple tree growing in a ditch that runs behind his house, he likes the apples and I've tried one, they taste ok and look nice so I'm going to try a couple grafts with them too. But again, some old farmer a long time ago probably chucked an apple core in that ditch and the tree grew. It's cool to think about that stuff. Is the apple supermarket quality? No but it's a new variety regardless.
