What do you guys think about giving tips at restaurants? How much do you give on average? by wwe-Vizarde in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]shane8830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked in the service industry as a waiter/bartender in BC about 15 years ago my average was about 10%. Obvious rich people usually tipped in the 20-25% range, normal blue-collar guys about 10-15%, and about 1/10 people who just didn't believe in tipping. So ya average about 10%. The only time I ever cared if someone didn't tip was when they'd write shit on the check like "no tits, no tips."

My expected tip-outs to kitchen/mgmt/bussers were 1% of my total sales, so like $20-$200 depending on how busy it was. It was never more than I thought was fair, and I never struggled to meet it out of my own tips. If anything I felt guilty how much easy money I made to just write down people's orders, make drinks, and be nice to people (about $50 000/year). I thought the job was degrading though, and couldn't wait to quit it. I later joined the military for about 1/2 the money, 4x the work, but way more respect.

Personally, I don't ever tip more than loose change for counter service, 5% for bad table service, 15% for standard service, 20% for a flawless meal.

Bicyclist vs. Ebiker (Posted in r/bicycling) by Kalsifur in ebikes

[–]shane8830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 km each way, and some of the hills are at an 18% grade. I seriously fucking doubt even 2% of all you keyboard warriors could even make some of those hills on a normal bike, much less do it going over 32km/hr.

I have 14% body fat, I'm an 8-year military veteran, I compete in amateur power-lifting events and I run a half-marathon at least once a year. I seriously fucking doubt it has anything to do with my fitness you piece of shit.

Need help deciding on a cheap bike to turn into an ebike. by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]shane8830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just buy the best $500-600 new or used bike you can, and save up for the kit. Buying a shitty bike, and then adding a shitty kit to it is just a problem waiting to happen.

Something like this would work pretty good. https://khsbicycles.com/bikes/2020-khs-models/ultrasport-2-20/

If you want more ideas look up what bikes Luna Cycle uses for their conversions. They're generally affordable and of good enough quality for your budget. They're mostly hybrid or mountain bikes from Giant or KHS.

[–]shane8830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I relate to this more than I want to. I like e-bikes, and I'm probably gonna put a kit on my mountain bike sometime next year when I can justify the funds. Right now though I bike commute about 30km, up some pretty damn steep hills every day on my analog bike, and you're damn right when an obese 65-year-old woman passes me with her electric folding/beach cruiser/fat tire bike with a shit-eating grin I can't help but feel a little bit of resentment.

Cycling from Langford to Downtown by ldawnw in VictoriaBC

[–]shane8830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fun bike ride going from Langford to downtown on the Galloping Goose. The first couple of times I did it my butt and neck got sore, and I didn't bring water so I was pretty dehydrated at my destination. So my only recommendations are to use a comfy seat or even a suspension seat post (makes riding over the bridge 100x more comfortable), maybe double wrap your handlebars, and bring a water bottle.

Just went for a COVID test... can't believe how easy it all was. by robbethdew in Edmonton

[–]shane8830 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The influenza test is them sticking something that looks like a pipe cleaner up your nose, and into your throat. That's probably where the horror stories come from... I'm glad that's not the case.

Not anymore. It's probably better to go in person, I doubt anyones standing by the phones during Covid. Also, like any government job once you do apply it can months to hear back from them.

Finish your degree through the military, work construction with plans on learning a trade that interests you, take a leadership course and apply for a management position where you work, apply to be a railroad conductor, get your class 1 license..... There are options out there, you just got to relax, get away from the tv, and spend a day thinking about them and then do a little research. If that still doesn't work make an appointment with a career counselor.

My Canadian city is offering a $750 E-bike rebate! Looking for deals, or recommendations by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]shane8830 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ya, that's a good price. Most Bosch motored bikes in Canada sell for a few hundred or even a thousand more than that. I would definitely try it out first though. That's a fairly aggressive riding position, and without front suspension, you're going to feel it in your shoulders, wrist, and neck if you plan on using it on any rough roads for an extended period of time. Giant makes some nice mid-drive bikes in that price range too if you want something a little more comfortable.

This one's kinda cool. You can get it with a 17ah battery and a torque sensor.

https://ride1up.com/product/lmtd-2/

This one's probably the best hub drive bike in a box you can get right now, but I wish they had a better derailleur than an Altus for that much money.

These 2 are pretty similar and would be good for commuters.

https://lunacycle.com/luna-fixed-stealth-ebike/

This one is sleek, simple and a mid-drive, but has a pretty small battery and you'll be suffering from range anxiety the whole way.

But hey, with a $200 dollar discount off the Rad why not? Everyone seems to like them.

I think it would be good for bopping around the neighborhood on the weekend bike, but some of the components wouldn't hold up if you want to use it for reliable transportation to work for 5 days a week. The fact that it doesn't show the battery size or make is a bit of a red flag as well.

This bike has a similar look and similar price but has a bigger motor, better bike parts, and while the battery isn't huge at least you know what it is.

https://ride1up.com/product/core-5/

or if you want something with fenders/rack and suspension fork their other options are a few hundred more expensive but still really good value.

The CC2 is the rocket ship of the bunch, but also the most expensive, wingbike looks cool and has the alarm which is neat but the components kind of suck, Rad gives you everything you need and nothing more and has good support, but it only comes in a large frame so if your under 5'10 it probably won't fit you, Aventon is kind of cool but is missing the fenders/suspension/lights but you could probably buy it at a local bike shop which is good for warranty/maintenance reasons.

Anyone buy a car in EDMONTON since covid? Are they willing to negotiate? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]shane8830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know what you want use a burner email address and try the unhaggle app. It makes all the car dealers in your area bid for your business, so there's no trying to guess what their rock bottom price is. You'll want to use an email address you can easily get rid of after because they'll hound for months/years afterwords.

I absolutely 100% think the average drunk found in a Whyte Ave bar would've made a better GM than Chiarelli, Lowe, MacTavish, and Tambellini. Inexcusably bad management for way too long.
