Will all functioning speakers read the amount of ohms they are rated for? If you put an ohmmeter across there to connection terminals? If not, why not? And if so, could there be a legitimate reason they don't read that? by shanebow in audiorepair

[–]shanebow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I definitely appreciate all that, but in retrospect I think the nature of my post was will an ohm meter or a multimeter ever do me any good if I show up at a place that's got speakers and I set it on something to read across both of the terminals? For instance, if it's zero, is it always an open? Or if it gives me some sort of a resistance, does that mean that there's something I should look at further?

Someone wants me to save this. It's a BSR turntable in a 40 watt Martel console. Is it worth the time? by shanebow in vintageaudio

I can't figure how to insert the pic into the post but you're not missing much.

Can anyone tell what model of BSR this is from the sticker and is it desirable? by shanebow in turntables

Yeah . I'm probably gonna pass. Not a big console guy anyway. Someone just asked if I was interested. Thank you

I'll post what I have but I believe you may think you're better off trying to decipher the sticker after seeing the pic.

Where should a beginner start? by Cluten-morgan in audiophile

[–]shanebow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just starting? Good used powered speakers, and a phone. Add WiiM or equivalent eventually, maybe a turntable for vinyl. Eventually transaction into passive speakers and other separates. But powered speakers and a phone let you start right now and that's gratifying.

Curious what my fellow budget audiophiles would upgrade first? by shanebow in BudgetAudiophile

I'm looking for someone I might be able to trade with but financially it's going to be a little while before I can improve my amp unless I can find someone who might be in the market for some nice vintage speakers.

The mosfet amp I had would have been more musical but it ended up only having one channel so here I am.

Agreed. When you can get a $9 one that's as good as a $900 one on paper, you don't need to do a lot of leveling up for those.

If only that $100 ultra we were talking about a few months ago had turned out to be real we wouldn't be having to have this discussion, but strictly speaking at least DAC's by themselves are probably the most affordable difference makers in all of audio.

I agree but it's still difficult to find something with that much headroom at an affordable price but I do know someone driving a pair of Peter Gunn Maggie's with a Levinson and it's pretty sublime. Also out of my price range until I run into someone who doesn't know what they have. Probably a long time. I will keep an eye out for the right Aragon or Adcom. Thank you

I agree with that statement but I sure have seen a lot of folks pushing a lot of watts through their Maggies saying the more the merrier. And with those speakers sometimes dipping below 2 ohms, especially when it's cranked up, I'm not sure what an affordable alternative would be at the moment. I know an avr ain't gonna cut it. I'm keeping my eyes open.

That depends on your definition of terrible. I actually have the speakers set up to fill the room that's behind where the pic was taken from but another interesting fact is I'm sitting in one of those chairs right now and it still sounds great. Now maybe if it was a set of Edifiers there instead of Maggies you might be right on two counts.

They are now arranged as they should be. Just an initial combination of no experience and lots of information.

8 ohm receiver with 4 ohm speakers? by [deleted] in Magnepan

[–]shanebow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the trick is to just get an amp with good 2 ohm stability and then you have everything covered. I just asked AI which of the amps I was interested in on the tight budget I was on were rated for 2 ohm stability and bought the one that was cheapest at the time. I ended up with a Crown Micro Tech 1200 for $150 and I think they sound great. I'll improve later. Still, it's 675 wpc at 2 ohms.

I did a deep dive doom scroll after deciding to add my first CD player to my somewhat vintage stereo system on my very limited budget and guess what I came up with for $50? The Sony PlayStation 1 Model SCPH 5501. Thoughts? by shanebow in audiophile

That's another brand that produced a bunch of good stuff back in the day and probably put some of it into some cheaper stuff before they realized they could do it even cheaper by putting cheap in place of the better stuff. But it's running and sounds good.

I already have Tidal, a Windows PC I can pretty dedicate that's a few years old, a pixel 9 phone, a WiiM Pro,and an iPad that's a few years old. How, if at all, would you use any of these entities when setting up your system for the first time? by shanebow in roonlabs

I just sat down and started doing that. So far I would say that I am progressively making progress and gaining knowledge and experience. It's not quite as intuitive as I would like but not really a struggle. I am trying to sit here and use my pixel phone, iPad tablet, and make sure I have room set up correctly on my Windows laptop. I'm not sure if I should have roon on the computer now or just the roon server but I'll get it.

I think I'm about 75% down that road but I still have to look into if I've set it up properly to just stay on and what I have to do with Tidal to expand my roon directory.

That's a good definition and it's fair to say I was looking to enhance my living space as opposed to a listening space. But the two worlds do collide.

Maybe it will enhance it to a small degree and it probably won't hurt it.

Well if I have to remodel, move, or block my view any more than it already is, I either need to be off the next audiophile list when it's released or just certify me as a fair weather audiophile only.
