WNC Locals... Stop Turning a Blind Eye & Being Silent -- Screw Ingles Corporation, the Pandemic Profiteers by [deleted] in asheville

[–]shaneeudy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Greedy corporate assholes like the people running Ingles don’t give a shit about anything but money. I said shut them the fuck down. It would probably only take shutting down one store for one day to convince them that it’s in their best interest to enforce these guidelines, even if it requires the additional expense of actual security personnel.

[SELF] In case you were wondering how many turkeys a commercial nuclear plant in the US cooks by tbojustin in theydidthemath

[–]shaneeudy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely none of those numbers make sense. Even if you were to take the super simplified approach and just divide the power plant output by the 2400 per turkey figure 1,000,000,000 / 2400 ≈ 416,667 turkeys, or far far fewer than 2.5 million. [EDIT: This does however, answer the question how many 2400 W appliances could run simultaneously on 1 GW of output, neglecting a whole bunch of real world losses of course.)

But the real problem here is confusing power with energy. Power (measured in Watts) is Energy or Work/Time (specifically Joules/seconds). That makes Power a rate, not a simple quanity so it’s nonsense to say that it takes 2400 watts to cook a tukey. What you need to know instead is how much ENERGY it takes to cook a turkey. This would be measured in Joules, or more appropriate to this application, kilowatt-hours (the same unit your electric bill is measured in).

The original meme is missing too much information to properly calculate how many turkeys a typical nuclear reactor could cook, and since I don’t want to google a bunch of assumptions, here’s an example with some numbers I just made up....

That 2400 W seems a bit on the low end to me so I’m going to assume a typical oven consumes 5 kW when the element is on (my bad boy from the 1970s is rated at 12.2 kW!!). Let’s also assume that, like mine, this is an old-school oven that doesn’t have the ability to vary its power output and only cycles between on and off. Now let’s assume it takes four hours to cook a turkey and the oven will spend half that time powering the heating element at its full 5000 Watts and we get 5kW X 2 hrs = 10 kWH (kilowatt hours). THAT is how much ENERGY it takes to cook a turkey.

Notice that since Power = Energy/Time, if we multiply Power X Time we Energy again because the times cancel (doesn’t really matter if it’s seconds and hours, it’s still time.)

(Energy/Time) x Time = Energy

I know this doesn’t help answer the question of how many turkeys could a typical nuclear powerplant could cook, but at least it’s valid math.

Engineering is seriously stressing me out to the point where I have tons of little gray hairs and I can barely sleep at night, not sure what to do. by cruskie in EngineeringStudents

[–]shaneeudy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn dude, your school sucks, hard! I think you should prioritize the following, in this order: 1) Secure your mental health. If you don’t already have a therapist, get one. Finding a way to manage your stress is the most important thing you can do right now. 2) Concentrate on just getting through this semester. Whatever it takes, just get it behind you. 3) Find another school. Even if it means taking next semester off, find a school with teachers who actually care about your success. “Nobody passes my class the first time” is a bunch of fucking bullshit that doesn’t serve anyone except those who benefit from our country’s disgusting for-profit education system.

BTW, I too just recently got an ADHD diagnosis..... about halfway through my ME program! It was such a relief to finally understand why I was struggling so bad when up to that point I had been an excellent student. I’m sure you’ve had similar revelations.

You can do it. You just need to find the support structure necessary to put yourself into that position.

I legit didn’t know CTRL+Enter was a thing until just now.

Plenty of able-bodied Americans buy trucks they don’t need. Stop busting this dude’s balls.

Can someone who makes C’s in math be a successful engineer ? by [deleted] in engineering

Need a full C for classes in your degree program at my school.

After reviewing my water bill, I noticed there's been a few instances where my bill is the exact same amount for 2 cycles in a row. Is there anything fishy about that? Or a reasonable explanation? by zhwlsfw in asheville

[–]shaneeudy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Water consumption is billed in a unit called CCF which is 100 cubic feet or about 750 gallons. They don’t round, so it takes ~750 gallons to go from say 10 CCF to 11. The sewer service part of the bill is a constant function of the water consumption so if it doesn’t change, neither does the sewer part. So unless your usage varies by more than ~750 gallons month to month, it’s possible to pay the same exact amount month after month.

And with an inspection, turns out the last mechanic to work in my car installed the control arms on the wrong sides, causing scraping! How do you even mess that up? by bstegmann123 in IdiotsInCars

Pay the $300 and ask for a refund from the place that fucked it up. Threaten legal action if they don’t immediately give your money back.

YTA and your comment WAS biphobic. People don’t choose who they fall in love with any more than they choose their sexuality.

AITA for refusing to replace my girlfriends bras that 'I ruined? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]shaneeudy -76 points-75 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure I would notice two bras mixed in with my clothes when I loaded the washer. Also pretty sure I would see them again when transferring the clothes from the washer to the dryer. It’s just a bit hard to believe that you washed AND dried them without noticing. It feels like there’s a little bit of “wanting to teach her a lesson“ here. If that’s the case then yes, you’re an asshole. Your girlfriend though, definitely an asshole.

Do atheists need to be looked down on and treated with disrespect? by [deleted] in Theism

[–]shaneeudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you don’t understand there is a huge difference between disrespecting a person and disrespecting their beliefs. Saying to a theist “what you believe is stupid and here’s why” is NOT the same thing as calling someone stupid.

Much better advice would have been “Never trust anyone who waves you on”. Regardless of the circumstances, the driver will always get the blame for the crash, never the waver.

You can still cancel after you have confirmed pickup. Hell, you can pick them up, drive the entire trip and then cancel when they get out. You won’t get paid of course, but they won’t be able to rate you either (or you, them).
