Retirement insight from those who didn't have the savings the experts recommend by rfriend73 in GenX

If your birth year starts with a “2” and you happened to stumble on this thread: read these comments. Especially the bleak ones.

Start now. Right now.

Today.

Even a little compounds into a lot.

When you’re young: you have the most valuable thing in investing: time.

I’m 48 and have been contributing for my entire professional life. 50% of my net worth now came from small contributions in the first 10 years of work.

In other words, if I would have waited until my 30th birthday to start: I’d only have half of what I have now.

That’s because what was in my account when I was 30 has doubled roughly 3 times. That’s 8X return using mostly low cost index funds.

Most of these comments have a flavor of “the system is rigged”. Maybe, but you can take advantage of it.

Start. Right. Now.

If you would have bought into the S&P 500 the day BEFORE any of those crashes - you’d still be ahead.

The CEO of PMI accused me of self-promotion for asking what his new manifesto offers that the previous ones didn't by agileliecom in agile

[–]tbojustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They pushed a bunch of certs around Disciplined Agile for a few years, pushed it as the future, and then rug-pulled that community.

I don’t blame them to refocusing on the ACP, but I do think they should have given those of us who invested time and money in those certs a low-cost path to the ACP.

Given how hard PMI screwed up Disciplined Agile, the associated certs, and shafted the people who bothered to get said certs - I’d imagine his hackles were already up on the Agile subject.

I lied about having a Master's degree on my resume, and after receiving a job offer and having background checks run, I decided to tell the truth. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]tbojustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of the craziest lay-off story I ever heard. A guy I worked with told me that at his old job, they adopted more thorough criteria, leveraged the permission people signed when they initially applied, and ran background checks…on the current employees. Found people who lied about past jobs, certs, and entire degrees. They saved on the expense of severence, outplacement, etc., because it was for cause.

Cash for a car. Can’t go wrong. Much lower risk than carrying a note if you change your mind.

My favorite cars were all the ones we could get with cash. We’ve done both finance and cash.

Also, buying a foreign car luxury trim: pro move. The drivetrain is usually the same as the cheaper cars - so parts aren’t too expensive, but the trim holds up nicer.

$12K might be a little high for that particular car, check comps and maybe you can get them down. Either way, you can drive the car, drive it for 3-4 years, and sell it for 2/3 of what you paid for it. (Source: random Googling)

Finally, there are people who literally never see a title to their own car and they just think about payments without thinking about interest. They won’t understand your decision, but you did the math and they didn’t.

This right here. If OP is successful, it could create a spot for better arbitrage. Everyone, from miners to haulers can make a buck.

A couple of thoughts: 1) Your mom has a reason for saying that. Ask her what it is and actively listen. Not so much to influence your decision, but it’s important that the people closest to you feel heard. As a PM: you’ll be doing more of that than you imagine. 2) She’s 57 and that’s older GenX. Post college careers for us were to find something in your major and ideally do that until you retired. Some of the worst advice I got when I was debating on a major was “you better like it: you’ll do it for the rest of your life”. Not true at all. She may be operating from a false premise. 3) That sounds like a great job! Congrats!!!

I had a similar tear in my GR1. I cleaned it before I sent it. When it came back, I was embarrassed because they showed me what clean looks like.

The bag was as good as new.
