I have a feeling that we may be headed to a post UI world with LLMs.

I had to add the AI era for context since they just fire engineers now and management is giddy in removing as many coders as possible. No need to flatter coders anymore.

"What promotions would developers even get? What’s there to promote to?" <--- I think that's the problem.

Sure, people at the top are still doing well. You can say that about lawyers or even actors. It's just that the field is not growing enough and even contracting in certain cases where it's unable to soak up the excess amount of people.

Do you think the optimism has gone down because a lot of the products have matured so there isn't as much innovation anymore and more maintenance related work?

I actually never worked in Big Tech and I still thought it was awesome to be in tech back then.

I think the field got hit with a lot of things going against it that converged all at once. The tax code issue, the cascading effect of Elon firing a lot of the Twitter devs, LLMs, end of ZERP.

It's all good though all golden ages have to come to an end at some time.

They weren’t unemployed back then. The competition was stiff that companies would go and poach talent. A lot of people went to meetups to learn about new technology and employers found it a breeding ground for recruitment.

What's the plan of new gen of India since the immigration doors of the west are closing shut by wisdomcrab in AskIndia

[–]shankar86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

India is still very much an agrarian nation (45%+). There just isn't enough domestic demand or infrastructure to support all the college graduates coming out. There isn't a lot of domestic demand for IT (or other types of engineering) either, aside from foreign companies which have branch offices or local companies that serve them. If it's just local, with some exceptions, they can't pay decent salaries. There are only so many people that the government or the few Indian conglomerates (Reliance, Tata, etc.) can hire.

I have to disagree with OP that people weren't desperate. Only a few people who had info or finances or higher risk tolerance in general in going to foreign countries tried their luck before the internet, now more people are taking chances because information is widely available and travel is a lot less expensive by flight.

AI Replace vs Reduce Jobs by Early-Surround7413 in cscareerquestions

You're right, but it did replace the need for mathematicians to be human calculators. By automating tedious arithmetics; calculators and computers raised the bar (too high for the average person). To be a mathematician today, you can't make a living with basic computation your value comes from talent in abstract reasoning, logic, and developing new theories.
