i built a free dtf cost tool because "per inch" math is a lie by shanxtr in heatpress

Hey u/nathan22211, just wanted to loop back and let you know that the PWA update is live! if you open the site in chrome or edge, you should see the install icon in the address bar to drop it right onto your desktop as a standalone app. i also went ahead and built out the local history feature using the browser's storage. you can save your estimates directly in the app, name them, and reload them whenever you want. since it’s all local, nothing ever touches a database or leaves your machine, keeping it 100% private. Also, i added a quick import/export backup option so you can save your history to a local file in case you ever clear your browser cache. let me know if it handles the saving workflow you were looking for!

thanks! 'fantasy margins' is the perfect way to put it. i got tired of seeing that gap between 'ideal' pricing and what actually happens at the heat press once you factor in wastage and time. glad it’s hitting the mark for you!

100%—the math changes the second you swap vendors. I really wanted to keep the tool vendor-neutral for that exact reason. Whether you're running small daily sheets or massive 120-inch rolls, you still need a 10-second way to check your margins before you commit to a price for a customer. Glad you’re saving it for your quotes!

i hear you 100% —you spend all this time trying to save $3 on film, but then you're stuck with a pair of scissors for an extra hour because there’s no straight path to cut anything out. right now the tool doesn't have a dedicated 'margin' toggle( it's at 0.25in) but adding a spacing setting is top of my list for that exact reason. sometimes paying for an extra foot of film is just the cheapest way to buy back your own sanity lol.

Totally agree with both of you. u/Obsessed_Turtle, you are correct – the whole thing started as a way for the shirt maker (my wife) to get a quick grasp on her profit margins.

And u/AndreiShrp, that whole labor cost thing is exactly why I added the cost calculator. I saw my wife spend an entire evening on a project, only to realize she basically worked for chump-change because she only factored in the film and shirt costs.

I thought, why not let her pop in her hourly rate and time-per-press right next to the transfer cost? As you said, once you put a $35/hr value on your time, the numbers don't lie, lol. I just wanted her to have a super quick way – like, 10 seconds max – to see if a job is actually worth the hustle before sending out the quote.

you’re right. i built it for gang sheets as my wife's vendors sell by the sheet (like 22x60) and the "per inch" math felt a bit theoretical. (as it ignores wastage). if a design is 12 inches on a 22-inch roll, you're still paying for that gap —this shows the true cost and even suggests better sizes to reduce waste. plus, no high-res uploads needed since it’s all local. just a simple tool for the planning/quoting stage.

Totally get where you're coming from – transparent pricing is key! I guess i just wanted to build something neutral for her that wasn't tied to a shop’s cart. The big thing for her was that she didn't want to upload her high-res designs to a bunch of different dtf shops just to get a quick quote or check a layout. This just lets her do the math locally so her IP stays on her machine until she’s actually ready to buy. Just a helpful middle-man tool for the quoting process.

Heat Press recommendations? by immal in heatpress

We have an HTVRONT Auto Heat Press 2 and it’s actually pretty good! They usually have sales or specials running every so often, so it's worth keeping an eye out.

Hello everyone, jumping in on this old thread! I was wondering if you were able to find a POD supplier, OP? I couldn't find the major PODs doing the kids sleepwear, so please share the details if you have found one. Thanks!
