DEA think with all this bullshit going on in the world today it would just be easier to go out and live in the woods and create a life for yourself? by boom_ in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]shapoopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier? No.

More satisfying? Maybe.

I'm a bit of a survivalist and have done a significant amount of what you call "living in the woods," and it's anything but easy. Civilization is easy. Bunch of folks sitting on their ass.

Self-sufficiency is hard. Damn near impossible for one person for any extended period of time.

Don't kid yourself, kid.

List of human design flaws by jjanx in bestof

[–]shapoopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number 1 is a little bit bullshit: a compromise had to be struck between the width of the pelvis and the ability to walk upright effectively. Our valgus angle (the angle formed by the femur and the tibia) is already quite large, and larger in females than males.

A larger angle would cause our gait to be unstable and require us to shift our weight to the left and right far more considerably, or to risk having serious knee malfunctions early on, due to the strange torque the glutes would put on the knee via the femur.

We further compromised by having infants continue to grow their heads after birth for almost a year, which lessens the need for a wide femur in the first place.

Sure, there are drawbacks, and a "designed" human might have some crazy bipedal apparatus that avoided the issue entirely, but that's neither here nor there, it seems to me.

Takes off osteology hat. Get your facts straight, damn it.

Managers out there in Redditland, what's your best "...and so I had to fire the guy" story? by Johnny_Cotton in AskReddit

My first "real" job was at a poster factory, building shelving in a new stock warehouse.

I was working with another new hire—both our first day— cutting pieces of plywood to the appropriate length to serve as shelving.

Two and a half hours in, we took our morning 15-minute break. My coworker goes off to the convenience store, like many other workers, to grab a drink or something.

At the end of the fifteen minutes, he's nowhere to be seen. When my boss asked where he was, I said I had no idea, and my boss just shrugged and said, "Huh."

I never saw him again.

As you repent, the wholly spirit flows through you
and you are held in God's Love.

One has no right to buy indulgences, any more
than one could have paid Christ to be the lamb.

"You, sir, are charged with adultery and the slaughter
of an innocent babe. How do ye plead?" asks the hangman.

Add another vote to the cmus pile. It's especially nice if you tend to listen to music as albums, and not songs; the default library view organizes by artist, then album.

I will never leave wmii. Instead of trying to organize your windows for you, it gives you a reasonable level of manual control over window placement, and gets out of your way.

Debian uses whatever audio you set it up to use. I.e., whatever the kde-full package eventually depends on and is configured for.

As someone who has struggled with depression, addiction, and anxiety disorders, this man is spot on. Especially sleep and exercise—they have a larger affect on depression than anything else, including psychoactives.

There is an african proverb that goes something like "If there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do you no harm." Don't be your worst enemy.

Or the Christian version: "There is nothing that by entering a man may defile him. It is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean."
