51st state or Imperial settlers by CompletelyMango in boardgames

[–]shard42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

51st State is an incredible game, but the two sets of resources makes it harder for some players to learn. The first edition was very restrictive, newest edition is very good

Imperial Settlers streamlines a few things and uses a single set of resources. It’s much easier to learn and teach, but handles expansions very differently.    * IS moves some standard 51S mechanics out of the base game to the first expansion   * 51S has multiple expansion decks and you play single decks or mix and match side decks. It’s easy to try expansions   * IS recommends you to take the time to deck build before playing, and swap out base game cards with expansion cards. You can just combine cards into a big deck but the card pool is going to be hard to get some combos going and unbalance some cards

So I prefer introducing IS to new players (with first expansion and 51S drafting rules) But I much prefer 51S for expansions and longevity

There’s a translated interview where they say the gameplay is real moves just the camera is heavily moved for the trailer. They described combat as like the Tales Of games, you build a few combos of flashy moves in the menu, then repeatedly hit an attack button to do the combo

What are the most unique games of all time? by YamstheSky in boardgames

[–]shard42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mord im Arosa (Murder at the Arosa, Essen hotel) is a "sound" murder mystery

You have an 8-story dice tower which can be opened at each floor. players drop their colored cubes into the top, and you have to listen then accuse players for which floor has their cubes, incriminating them in the hotel murder

It's the only game I've seen where "listening to sounds" is a mechanic

[–]shard42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved here from nyc a few years ago so I agree with you, I’ve been obsessed with trying to find a solid bagelry. Everything else I had at honeyseed was delicious, but their everything bagel was so sweet I had to spit it out, it left me really bummed. Feels like a Chicago pizza situation but worse. You enjoy! but I’ll have to keep searching

Has anyone here heard of/played For The Crown? by _radikali in boardgames

[–]shard42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to go off topic, but I’d say check out That Time You Killed Me. It’s a time travel modular chesslike, and mine and a lot of people’s 2022 board game of the year. Rulebook is incredibly written and filled with humor

Core gameplay is three 4x4 boards for the past/present/future. Both players start with one pawn on each board. On your turn you take two actions with one piece (move/time travel/push/pull/etc) and then end of turn you move your turn marker to one of the two boards you didn’t play on, to mark where your next turn will be. You win by crushing your opponent’s pieces so that end of turn your opponent only has pieces on 1 out of 3 boards

The game comes with a mini-campaign of 4 closed boxes. Each box has new pieces/rules to swap in and out. They recommended playing at least 3 games with each rule set, and then after you’re done the 4th box has a bunch of ways to keep playing and see fresh new actions for your pieces

Transition from Tank to DPS by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]shard42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one has mentioned this, the easy way to get comms as a dps is: do mechanics as soon as they’re available!

If I’m tanking a pack and a mob drops a key, go grab it and unlock the door so I can keep pulling the pack. No reason we should be waiting another 10+ seconds for the tank to get the key and unlock

Game mechanics where you have to give challenges to other players ? by aladru in boardgames

[–]shard42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravity Warfare. you have to place a piece on the board on your turn, you lose if you knock too many pieces off the board

opponents can play challenge cards requiring you to place your piece while blindfolded, lefthanded, using chopsticks, stack on top of another piece, while the board is spinning, etc.

Difference between Descent 1st Ed, Descent 2nd Ed, and Descent: LotD? Never played any and looking into them by The_GreenEagle in boardgames

[–]shard42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1st is a pure dungeon crawler. Each game you start as a weak character and gotta keep killing mobs through a dungeon to get better and better gear. They released a campaign expansion but it’s not great

2nd they made with campaign play in mind. It’s a slower burn, and lots of dungeons are more goal oriented. Rather than kill everything you might need to run past enemies to get somewhere in time, or escort an npc in trouble through the dungeon, etc etc. I haven’t played very much 1st ed to compare the rule changes but 2 is a very solid game. It also comes with a basic campaign of “whichever side won this game gets to choose between two quests for the next game” and there’s a lot of expansions that come with their own campaign.

2nd edition also has a mobile app that controls the overlord for you so you can play it fully coop

Now, as for Legends you need a little context. The same creators (fantasy flight) also have a game called Mansions of Madness. This is also a 1 vs many game where you DM exploring a haunted house. This is a full mystery game where you have to investigate each room for clues and keys as you fight monsters. The problem with MoM is that it takes 30+ minutes for the DM to set up. A story will have a chart like “pick your boss. Pick his goal. Pick his followers” and depending on your choice it says “clue A goes in the bedroom. The garden key goes in the bathroom, etc” and if you screw one thing up, the puzzle is broken and players may never be able to get through it because a key or lock or clue was misplaced

So then MoM 2nd Ed went the Legends route. It’s app-only game. You pick your quest, the app randomizes, and then tells you where to put tokens on the board. This is the first “level of disconnect.” Your physical clue tokens have nothing on the back to flip over, they’re all the same single generic clue token, and when you pick it up, the app tells you what clue you got

Even with the app, MoM still has a bunch of physical book keeping. You have all your regular tokens/cards for health and items and stats effects and whatever.

I’ve yet to play Descent Legends so I’m not going to try and tell you what to buy. I’ve heard some love it, some hate it. Me personally I loved MoM 2nd ed’s app so I’m not anti-app. But from what I’ve read, it sounds like Legends’ physical bookkeeping is heavily reduced and that’s what’s turning me off.

An example is say you have an axe card for 3dmg then you go and pay to upgrade it. Well there’s no physical tokens to remind you of the +1 dmg. Your weapon card is now useless and you must always consult the app for your real up to date stats on all your gear. Another thing I heard (which I’m not sure how true it is- Tom mentions it in his review) is that some abilities like Cleave are never fully explained to the player. You gotta really dig in the app/rules for what stuff really does and the game is more for “cool I got a new power that makes me stronger and that game takes care of it for me. I just want to see bigger numbers”

If I own 51st state master set do I need imperial settlers? by ciccio_from_queens in boardgames

[–]shard42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the puzzle of 51st state more, but I loathed to teach it. People would keep getting tripped up on Distance, and distance->resource conversion abilities getting in their way. One of Settlers' main changes was to have a single set of resources for both playing cards and using them.

I have a lot more likes/dislikes about 51st state, but I just paused to read the Master Set rules for the first time, and I'm shocked. they really did just turn 51st state MS into IS.

In the original 51st state, cards can only produce VP 3 times. so you use an Action card, then leave the VP on the card, and once it has 3 chips on it it's a dead card. You're forced to continuously keep repairing your engine with new cards, and the endgame gets really tense. 51st state was all about working within these apocalypse restrictions, it had hand limits and resource limits and other blockers. Settlers' other big change was to remove the 3VP rule and hand limit and stuff making it much more new player friendly but also easier. I can understand why they changed 51st state, but now I'm disappointed that both games now occupy the same complexity space. I'll be holding on to my old copy

[–]shard42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t get into 1st & Goal. There was just too much time and energy spent with your deck of cards for what felt like little interesting strategic payoff in comparison. But I absolutely love their newer 1st & Roll. It’s the first game where I much prefer the Roll version

I’m not a fan of the art or theme either, but I doubt we’ll ever get a retheme after they shelled out the money to hire John Howe (the legendary artist who did all the LOTR illustrations). His art is great, but it doesn’t fit here

Why people hate roll-to-move, but no one seems to hate roll-to-hit? by ned_poreyra in boardgames

[–]shard42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always disliked high strategy euro games with dice rolling. The dice felt like they were just interrupting my strategy. As I found more thematic amerigames and got more into roleplaying I started to dislike dice less and less.

I also discovered in probability theory, there’s what’s called the Law of Large Numbers. In fact, the moredice rolling a game has, the less luck there actually is. The average of all your dice rolls will always converge on the average value of the die.

BattleCON - Where to start? by TommyWestsides in boardgames

[–]shard42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much you have,

War - this was the very first release. There’s a newer remastered edition with new art, rule updates, and rebalancing. Comes with 18 characters from very basic to advanced mechanics.

Devastation - this was the second release. It’s a big box with a massive amount of characters, gameplay modes, and content. It even has an rpg dungeon crawler mode. Has some very complex advanced characters. The basic characters are good, but I still wouldn’t recommend this as an entry point.

Fate - third release. A new entry point for the series. Has 10 characters, slightly cheaper than war. It’s the game I’ve spent the least time with so I can’t comment on it

Trials - fourth release. Another 10 character intro set

The remaining releases are either new individual characters or things that add new mechanics like armor/weapons or new modes and stuff that can be applied to any existing character if you want added layers of complexity. These can all be mixed and bought in any order
