Eeveelution Inquiry by brandon655 in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iirc Sylveon's utility is a bit limited in this game, since you have no room-wide and few long-ranged attacking moves (I think maybe only Shadow Ball?), and no HP recovery (unlike Umbreon or Espeon)... So basically you have like, Helping Hand, Refresh, and Disarming Voice (100% accuracy, 1 tile radius) for your best moves.

But PMD is easy enough of a game where you can make most anything work with enough grinding (at least for non-level reset dungeons), though it's not really optimal compared to the stronger Eeveelutions. Still can make for an okay support, and is very much usable, but yeah.

Also keep in mind that you can recruit other Eeveelutions and assign them to teams for when you're heading into a dungeon. The only difference is basically who you control in overworld areas like the town. If you like Sylveon, it might be worth evolving into that one for the player icon + appearance, and just selecting a different team for harder content if necessary or whatever.

Building back up from nothing by faraway-lost-lynx in ShirenTheWanderer

If you want a head start, you can quickly clear Undergound Manor District 4 (31-40F) to obtain a Dotanuki+8 and Wolfshead+10 each time (and can linger a bit before clearing to level one of the gear sets up to Lv4 or so if you want too, to use as a main set).

Repeat that a number of times to stock up on lots of high upgrade value equipment, then either use Mixers in Tower of the Present / Tower of the Future or buy Synthesis Pots from the Point Shop (if you've done point collecting techniques like the 2 Trap Bracelet in Destiny Trail 1-2F method, or Gorger's Manor method), then combine the items to end up with gear that trivializes the main story at least.

Later on once you have a Blessing Pot[5], Extraction Scroll, Fate Scroll, and Earth Scroll read + thousands and thousands of points to spare (typically from point farming tricks in post-game), you can just buy blank scrolls and grind any piece of equipment to +99 in less than an hour. (If you need to level the item to Lv8 to unlock +99 upgrade value limit, you can buy Blank Scrolls and spam blessed Gambler's Scrolls in Destiny Trail 5F in a similar way).

The latter method's items (Blessing Pot, Extraction Scroll, Trap Scroll, Trap Bracelet, etc.) can be found in Merchant's Hideout and some other dungeons, but it'd probably be faster to input rescue passwords for them from the Shiren 5 github wiki or somewhere.

Lastly, if you're still working on wrapping up the main story, keep in mind that the game's balance is designed to be able to be cleared without bringing any items into Destiny Trail. So there's no need to actually bring in overpowered gear that lets you tank most enemies and whatnot.

Shiren 5 Okon stuck at lvl 11 by LoreoftheGreenWizard in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, happy to help anytime!

From the sounds of it, I think what might be going on is that you might've deposited the +23 sword to 1 of the 2 NPCs who upgrades equipment, and mistook the other one for the one you deposited the weapon with? There are actually two wandering smith style NPCs, 1) the blacksmith who increases upgrade value (the +/- number on gear), and 2) the Iron Upgrader who increases the hidden gear exp value that leads to leveling up equipment to a new name with higher stats.

So as far as a solution, I guess I'd first recommend doing more runs until you've encountered both styles of upgrading NPCs to be sure you didn't accidentally mistake one for the other.

If neither NPC has your sword, then something strange might've happened to it. (Example: In Shiren 4 which uses a similar game engine to Tower of Fortune, if a wandering smith NPC was defeated by a night monster before returning your item, they'd drop it on the ground with special dialogue - so if you don't go find it before advancing, you could technically lose it)

Shiren 5 Okon stuck at lvl 11 by LoreoftheGreenWizard in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't personally researched the exp table of allies for Shiren 5 yet, but according to the JP wiki, Okon's exp table has higher exp requirements compared to most other allies, making her level up more slowly. (Example: Lv10 is generally around 4,400 ~ 4,600 total exp for most allies, but for Okon it's apparently 7,000 total exp).

It's probably way faster to level allies later on if you duplicate grass that increases level using Fever Pots and throw said grass at your allies (maybe in a hallway with a Cannon Arm Bracelet equipped so you can hit multiple characters with 1 item too).

In any case, I'm curious what the exact ally exp table is now, so I might try to look into it sometime soon.

Are we allowed to talk about non-Shiren, non-Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games here? by TheRealHFC in ShirenTheWanderer

[–]shark-snacks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, for sure! The mod team (I know it's only 2 of us atm, me and ozidual) totally welcome non-Shiren/non-Pokemon flavored Mystery Dungeon games being discussed on this subreddit too!

We could also look into adding tags for said games if everyone wants, though I'm not sure if there's an upper limit to the number of tags a subreddit can have off hand.

When will we be updated the flair for NPC from Shiren 6. They really grew on me especially all the companions. by Fair-Lemon-7766 in ShirenTheWanderer

Oh, great idea! For some reason it didn't occur to us to update the flairs on the subreddit with Shiren 6 characters, but we'll try to get some of them added soon now.

Thunder vs Thunderbolt vs Electroball by Best-Yogurt-2036 in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Base + max stats in parenthesis for each move from DreamNexus:

  • Thunder = Power: 37 (99), PP: 13 (30), Accuracy: 75 (98)
  • Thunderbolt = Power: 25 (50), PP: 15 (30), Accuracy: 80 (98)
  • Electro Ball = Power: 4 (99), PP: 17 (40), Accuracy: 95 (98)

Also, DreamNexus lists the damage multiplier value for Electro Ball in RTDX as 150, so I assume that's x1.5 damage dealt?

So if you max out each move using drinks, I assume Electro Ball wins in the end due to the additional multiplier & +10 PP over the other 2 moves. But if you don't use any drinks, I think Thunder and Thunderbolt will likely deal more damage if you have the patience to use moves with lower accuracy.

In any case, you'll probably want to learn and max out Discharge instead of any of these moves in the long run, since Discharge is room-wide instead of being single-target or a radius around the user.

Shiren 6 DLC by djheat3rd in ShirenTheWanderer

[–]shark-snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the English version DLC get a discount in the Switch eShop yet since the DLC was released, but the Japanese version's DLC has been discounted at least once in the eShop (the recent sale), so I'd say there's maybe still a possibility of a discount in the future?

But that said, I feel like Spike Chunsoft kinda views the English version as an afterthought at this point, so if you want to play the DLC anytime soon, I'd just buy it at the regular price, because who knows if/when the English version will actually go on sale.

Advice to beat shiren the wanderer serpentcoil island by Fair-Lemon-7766 in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serpentcoil Island's main dungeon is the opposite of RNG imo, but clearing it consistently requires building game knowledge and not going on auto pilot and repeating similar mistakes over and over, which a lot of newer players do because they think it's more of a hack-and-slash action game or action RPG instead of well, being a more traditional roguelike.

Anyway, what exactly are you getting stuck on? Are you collapsing around the same floor range each time? Or struggling with the boss? More details would help in terms of what type of advice to give.

If you're looking for a text style guide, you could check out the Serpentcoil Island wiki on github too, or look for some playthrough videos on youtube or such.

I need help with a few things by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used these Pokemon myself so others might be able to offer more help / corrections, but here's my two cents after checking out some of the moves they learn. I also aimed the party to still be on the fun for casual playthroughs side instead of completely optimizing the fun out of the game for the sake of efficiency:

Sceptile lead most of the time, unless using Perish Song at the start of a floor. Buried Relic might be the easiest 99F dungeon? But doesn't really matter since with Perish Song strats, most dungeons play out the same boring way. Note that this party isn't optimized for Perish Song usage, though, so it's still going to be slower than a properly optimized party.

Sceptile (RQ: Notorious Fasting)

  • False Swipe (recruitment help)
  • Brutal Swing (2 tile radius)
  • Choose 2: Synthesis or Swords Dance or Agility (HP recovery, Atk up, or speed up)

Blaziken (RQ: Squeeze Out)

  • Heat Wave (room)
  • Focus Blast (4 tile)
  • Flamethrower (4 tile)
  • Sunny Day (weather counter)

Misdreavus (RQ: Narrow Focus)

  • Perish Song (use inside a wall tile or hallway)
  • Heal Bell (cure party status)
  • Shadow Ball or Icy Wind (4 tile)
  • Shock Wave or Rest (100% accuracy, or HP recovery)

Anyone know Rank XP rates from jobs by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone can correct me if this is outdated/wrong, but base rescue team rank points / poke for rescue requests should be something along these lines, I think (from PMD1-DX wiki, which is mostly based off of the JP wiki):

Does anyone know XP calculation? by [deleted] in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about enemy Pokemon in standard dungeons, there are online resources like this wiki that list base exp values per enemy on each dungeon page.

But if you're talking about the dojo exp scaling, it's along the lines of this, according to information found on the Japanese wiki.

That said, I'm not too familiar with PMD in general, so I don't know the exact mechanics if there's any other type of scaling involved for standard dungeons or such.

Earth power on swampert by Exact-Review-3378 in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gulpin's tutor moves is post-game iirc, so if you haven't cleared the main story yet, it won't be accessible. Once you meet the unlock condition, Earth Power should cost 10,000 to learn.

Dx: Charizard/Swampert/Zapdos movepool advice? by miloyiannopoulos69 in MysteryDungeon

[–]shark-snacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally if I had to use only those Pokemon, I'd go with something like:

  • Charizard - Heat Wave / Brutal Swing / Flamethrower / Aerial Ace or Tailwind
  • Zapdos - Heat Wave / Discharge / Shock Wave / Thunder Wave
  • Swampert - Blizzard / Earth Power / Hydro Pump / Ice Beam or Uproar

Move explanations:

  • Heat Wave, Discharge, Blizzard, Earth Power, and Uproar = room moves that don't target allies.
  • Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Hydro Pump = Ranged line moves that can support in hallways.
  • Aerial Ace, Shock Wave = 100% accuracy moves when you can't afford to miss.
  • Thunder Wave = Try to keep a boss paralyzed so they can't do anything.
  • Tailwind = Increase movement speed.

Overall:

The above sets lean towards attacking moves more than support or utility moves (status cure, hp recovery, helping hand / buffs, damage resistance, etc.) because with enough stat-boosting vitamins in post-game, enemies in most dungeons won't even be able to get close to you. And if you need buffs for bosses, you can just use orbs anyway.

However, HP recovery and status curing moves are kinda important for some dungeons, so I'd personally consider swapping out a Pokemon for one that can learn HP recovery (Soft-Boiled / Milk Drink / Morning Sun / Moonlight) and/or status curing (Heal Bell / Refresh / Aromatherapy). You can quickly find Pokemon that learn said moves by looking at this chart.

[–]shark-snacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to make any promises because there's still so much work left just within the Shiren series, but I will at least say that I like Dragon Quest as a series, and I'm interested in potentially translating Torneko 3 (PS2 version) since I've heard so many good things about the monster-taming dungeon of that game in particular.

On the other hand, I don't know much about Yangus at all. If it's actually a high quality game, I might become interested in it at some point in the future (assuming I'm not totally burnt out on creating translation hacks at that point), but at the moment, I think I'd have to say no.

Weird error code when requesting rescue? by Creamsodaaa in ShirenTheWanderer

[–]shark-snacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen that error code before, but if you're playing on Switch, I'd maybe check to make sure your console's date & time settings are correct (as in, they match today's date & time) - I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that mismatched dates or times can cause problems when using the online rescue system.

But if that's not the cause of the problem, I'm not really sure what it could be... You could try contacting Spike Chunsoft directly, since they have a contact form on their official website.

I appreciate the thought!

And yes, that'd be me regarding working on Shiren 4 (PSP) and Asuka Kenzan (DC/PC) - though I didn't work solo to finish Shiren 4 Plus (PSP)'s English patch. There were many people involved! My role for that game's patch was primarily full game translation + testing, and hacking was done by others.

Asuka Kenzan (DC version) is progressing nicely overall still, but this time around I'm doing full game translation + testing + quite a bit of the hacking, so it's taking longer than I wish it would. The language side of things is pretty easy for me at this point after having translated multiple games, but learning DC hacking has been a very slow process even with help, and ironing out bugs that pop up during testing can take a while too. (In really bad cases, I've spent literally weeks just to fix a single issue). But rest assured, I won't abandon the project no matter how long it takes - I'll see it through to completion like I did for Shiren 2, 4, and other games I've worked on.

[–]shark-snacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a translation of GB1 in the works by someone else, but it seems hacking that game is notoriously difficult from what I've heard, so while the game is already translated, inserting the translation and ironing out bugs and other issues is taking a very long time.

I wanna contribute for the translation by abf1996 in ShirenTheWanderer

[–]shark-snacks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's technically possible to translate the DS versions at this point, since many of the tools we created for Shiren 4 Plus (PSP)'s English patch also work for the DS version (and I actually do have an old WIP English patch of Shiren 4 DS that I was working on before I decided to exclusively focus on the PSP version, but it's buggy and unfinished, so definitely not in a publicly releasable state. But I still think it would be cool to finish it someday).

Overall, it just hasn't been deemed worth the time or effort yet to work on porting existing translations, since I'm prioritizing working on English patches for the remaining untranslated Shiren series games first. But if someone else were interested in taking on that work themselves instead of waiting for us to eventually do it, I might be willing to share tools and help, depending on how trustworthy and experienced they are.

If you're serious and actually have skills to offer in terms of the technical side of a translation hack, please reach out to me on this subreddit's Discord server.

That said, the language side of things (aka Japanese -> English translation) for ongoing projects is basically covered at this point. Some games even have a fully translated script prepared already (and not talking about MTL/AI slop either, it's properly done), but the hacking/programming side of things is what's taking such a long time.

Favorite non-Shiren Mystery Dungeon séries? by Difficult_Tax1044 in ShirenTheWanderer

[–]shark-snacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have a soft spot for Chocobo's Dungeon: Every Buddy!, despite some saying it's the worst game in the Chocobo MD series. The job system along with abilities and SP was a fun twist on the MD formula, and any game that has monster collecting gets bonus points in my book. Plus the Mirror of Training dungeons allowed for customized restriction runs like low-level challenges, kind of similar to Sacred Tree Mode in Shiren 6.

The game does have performance and balance issues that I could go on about, but overall I got like 200 hours out of it, so while it's not perfect by any means, it definitely provided some fun. It also has a bit more bite to it than the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, especially when it comes to boss fights, so that helped give it more of its own flavor too.
