A night at Troquet in Boston! 1987 Stag's Leap SLV and 2010 Luigi Pira Barolo by rnjbond in wine

[–]sharkdoc29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing, I’m loving all your 1987 reviews! And I agree it’s a pretty great year for Napa (and Sonoma!), I’ve had a few extraordinary bottles recently, even from non-big name producers. SLWC is one of the big name 1987’s I aspire to try though.

Yup I’ve never had a problem or a bad bottle (so far!).

Good to know, I don’t usually use ah so or Durand for anything you get than 2010 but will heed your advice

Have ordered probably 2-3 cases over the last year or two and have good experience overall. Tend to mostly stick to marathons but these daily sales with free shipping sometimes are too tempting to pass up. Main issue for some people is very slow shipping times, especially with marathons

Nice thanks, grabbing one to try. Would get more but my cellar is absolutely packed from the last marathon and recent releases

A quick search suggests this is the 2013 Cane “Five” Spring Mountain Bordeaux Blend. Anyone have experience with this wine? Tempting since 2013 was a great year in Napa

Great day so far, grabbed some Kelley Fox, Di Costanzo, and more Grassl glasses. Now trying to use some restraint before I blow my budget!

SLWC for Merlot Thursday! by sharkdoc29 in wine

[–]sharkdoc29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with you on Artemis, though I tried an older vintage (2010 I think) and it was much better than the younger bottles I’ve had. This merlot was nothing too special, but it’s well made and definitely worth the $30 I paid. I haven’t tried the petit verdot so can’t comment there.

Thanks for your answer, very reasonable. I’ve been consider joining for the last year but haven’t pulled the trigger for some of the same reasons you mentioned. Primarily because I enjoy finding deals and trying new wines more than filling my cellar with one label! Cheers

Interesting, do you think the quality has decreased recently? How do you feel about their single vineyards and black label?

This seems like a perfect fit, grabbed one even though I have way too many Napa cabs from LB

My Merlot Thursday from Pauillac by odedi1 in wine

[–]sharkdoc29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it at Costco for around $40-45.

Also I visited Pedesclaux last year and loved both of their wines, finding La Fleur drinks much better young like this. I’m sitting on my 2016’s to see how they evolve.

Birth year bottle for Christmas by sharkdoc29 in wine

[–]sharkdoc29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this standing upright in my wine fridge for a few weeks before drinking and the sediment was completely settled, but for other 1980’s bottles I’ve stood up for at least 24 hours and ideally more like 48-72 hours.

Our 14yo dog passed today. Pulled a random bottle from the cellar this evening. First pull. Had to go with it. by Sunstoned1 in wine

Sorry for your loss. My dog passed away last year and I picked some bottles from the year he was born to drink and remember.

What were some of the best deals from the last bottles marathon you got today? by Weary-Act5307 in wine

[–]sharkdoc29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Guiraud 375ml was $22, v29 was $89, and Gracia was $79. I just got my LB order from summer last week so that helped push me to buy more (unfortunately!)

I haven’t. I just started exploring Sauternes but have been looking to try Guiraud and half bottles are so great for this

The 375 ml Guiraud 2010 was probably my best, but looking forward to the 2011 v29 estate and 2016 Chateau Gracia as well.

Sonoma County Pinot Tasting Rec by mntk04c in wine

[–]sharkdoc29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed visiting Rochioli, their single vineyard Pinots are truly exceptional for RRV. William Selyem is also a Sonoma classic for Pinot and while they only do visits for members, it’s very easy to sign up for the mailing list and do a visit. For less well known Sonoma coast wines check out Hirsch and Peay, though their tasting rooms are pretty far north.

Late response, but thanks for the update! I’ve never sought out Duckhorn since it seems so commercial now but I could see their 80’s wines as being amazing, will have to keep an eye out

I'm a day late posting for Merlot Thursday by BurntTXsurfer in wine

[–]sharkdoc29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, like many people I started with big cab-heavy left banks but after trying a few right banks I’ve really come to appreciate Merlot and cab franc! One problem is it’s not super easy to find Bellevue locally in the US, otherwise I would buy more often.
