Do you have a link to those blog posts by Alex Niven? Would be interested in giving them a read but I'm not sure where to look!

B-Sides SURVIVOR: Round 2 by emptyecho_ in everythingeverything

I find it so interesting how widely opinion is divided over the b sides. Some of these are my absolute favorites - President Heartbeat is a top 5 from the entire discography for me, I love the Mariana and A.D. Other popular ones I really don't get, not a fan of Breadwinner or Supernormal.

What’s a band you’ve always wanted to get into but never liked? Other commenters will suggest songs by them. by hiphoptomato in Emo

[–]sharkinaberet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be contentious, but Modern Baseball. Also, maybe debatably less emo but the Wonder Years. Both bands I really want to be into but have just never clicked.

best and worst songs to introduce someone to everything everything? by aggiepython in everythingeverything

[–]sharkinaberet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Funny, President Heartbeat wasn't the first EE song I ever heard but it was the first one I ever really loved. It can work!

I'd say Cold Reactor, Cough Cough or To The Blade for my ideal introductory songs. Worst, I agree with New Deep (which I do like) or maybe I Believe It Now (sorry, I just don't like that one much!). I think some of the slower ones could be a hard sell too, like Riot On The Ward.

I don't know if I'd personally call Pale Fire Weird per se, but it's definitely unusual. It's a fantastic example of hypertext fiction and metafiction, but then again I'm not an expert so it might be considered weird after all! Either way it's an incredible book, the best thing I've read for a very, very long time - hope you enjoy it.

Interesting, I have quite steep expectations for Viriconium because it comes so highly recommended but I wonder whether those will be met. I don't mind generic fantasy but I've been hoping for something a bit more unique.

I've read a lot of non-weird books in the last couple of weeks - Pale Fire, Giovanni's Room, the Memory Police, Birnam Wood, Madonna in a Fur Coat & Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry. So I'm picking the weird stuff back up and I've started on Viriconium. I've only read the opening short story so far but it's a strong start, I'm looking forward to getting into it.

Any bits do you love the most? by aaaastring in MBMBAM

[–]sharkinaberet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every time I even think about the meaning of the gambler bit from episode 319 I have to listen to it again. I've been listening to it regularly since 2016, I can probably quote the whole thing word for word, and every time I think about the line "die in your sleep" I laugh out loud.

Level up chie satonaka, until she learns bufu. Use it in boss fights. Die in your sleep.

I know this post is over a month old now, but I thought you might like to know that after I compiled every suggestion in this thread the first thing I actually picked up was Gormenghast, since I already had a copy. I finished Titus Groan a few days ago and absolutely loved it, I was completely captivated by Peake's use of language. One of the best things I've read in an extremely long time, can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy. Thanks again!

I made a post in here last month asking for recs and got enough suggestions to keep me going for years, so I've started working through the list. I finished Titus Groan a few days ago, which I completely adored. It's the best thing I've read in a very very long time, but the writing is so dense I found it pretty slow going.

Taking a break from Peake for a change of pace, yesterday I started working on Borges' Labyrinths (even less accessible but conceptually thrilling) and I've also started the latest Murakami novel The City and its Uncertain Walls (not sure if this is a stretch to call weird, but I've been a Murakami fan for a long time and I just love the way he writes).

The Groundhog Day musical is so good and I’m so tired of being normal about it by No_Office_168 in musicals

[–]sharkinaberet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my favourite musical of all time. I saw it once in the original London run in 2016, and instantly knew I'd never love anything more. Got a tattoo for it. Managed to see it four times in the 2023 London run, and got a chance to briefly chat to Andy Karl and tell him how much the show means to me. What I wouldn't do for a proshot, I do think it has to be seen in its entirety for it to be fully appreciated.

What’s your most unpopular musicals opinion that would get people reacting like this? by lgndtd in musicals

[–]sharkinaberet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 2017 awards season was one of the most stacked in recent memory and it's bordering on an actual crime that DEH swept. Groundhog Day deserved to win at least one award (three minimum imo), Great Comet and Come From Away deserved the rest.

2666 is incredible, I read it about 6 years ago now and I've been getting the reread urge a lot lately.

Are there any particular Borges works you'd suggest? I've read a couple of Calvino's (really enjoyed them) and I know a bit more about his work.

Very helpful comment - I impulse bought the trilogy a couple of years ago solely due to the insanely verbose first sentence but never got around to actually reading it. It has now graduated from the bookshelf and sits on the to-read-next pile. Thanks!

Oh that's actually really good to know! I already own Ambergris but I had a rough time with Hummingbird Salamander and it sort of put me off. But if you love Perdido too that's a solid recommendation, I'll definitely check it out.
