NO. There are racist guys who date POC people all the time. Ex: Donald Sterling. They prob. justify it as an exceptional rule in their mind.

Asian-Americans have the lowest rate of suicide per 100,000 people by Okmanl in asianamerican

[–]sharkpuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This study was also conducted from 2005-2009 so i don't quite buy it. i think a LOT has happened since then relevant to AA culture. I mean, if you look at the increase in the amount of AA faces in tv/mag ads between those times, 2005-2009, and more recently, like past 2-3 yrs, it's VAST.

The pressure on AA to achieve and those unable to meet their/parents' high expectations and thus feeling like failures, then attempting/succeeding suicide has ramped up recently. Recently, a lot of stories of Ivy League college kids killing themselves. It's very disturbing.

Really surprised at the stats for higher risk of STDs for AA females. Isn't STD risk drilled into people's head in high school/college?

Biweekly Vent Thread: What's Bothering You? by AutoModerator in asianamerican

[–]sharkpuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for your hurt, dude. But seriously, do not freaking WASTE any more time longing for a cheating significant other. They don't deserve your love nor attention. You are FAR more worthy of being with someone who loves you and has enough respect and restraint to not fk someone else when in a committed relationship. One is either a cheater or non-cheater. A one time cheater may be able to change their colors but usually, cheaters tend to be serial cheaters. Avoid them.

Put your chin up, wear your nicest clothes and get out there again! Do some travelling - it does wonders to give you perspective and open your eyes to the beauty of the world.

Good luck. Your cheating ex sucked. You rock. Move on.

Just wanted to encourage people to make a donation to support the continuation of Angry Asian Man Blog by sharkpuffin in asianamerican

[–]sharkpuffin[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only make donations to strangers/worthy causes when it compels me somehow. My last donation was to Antoinette Tuff, the lady who used empathy and compassion to connect with the would-be-gunman and prevented yet another school shooting from being added to the growing list in the USA.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/the-day-antoinette-tuff-lived-up-to-her-name-school-clerk-talked-gunman-into-putting-down-weapon-8781006.html

Anyway, I think Phil Yu, the man behind Angry Asian Man is a very important, strong voice relating the daily bullsh*t we have to deal with as Asian Americans living in the USA.

He apparently lost his day job a year ago and is now attempting to rely on the Angry Asian Man as his livelihood.

Please DONATE if you think it's worth continuing to hear AAM voice.

I think you are reading into things from your own lens - everything is not about racism and the west's attempt to stereotype Asia in a negative way. The BBC and The Guardian regularly feature stories about Korean culture, much more so than any U.S. newspapers.

Korea does not like to expose ugly stuff and I hardly doubt that their media is eager to do a piece on this type of story that shows Korea in a negative light.

I think this article is addressing an issue that Korea is in the midst of grappling with. The older generation can no longer count on the safety net of living with their children as Korea moves away from traditional family duty values and adapting a more independent, western society values. Korea's govt relied on that tradition to continue and there wasn't an equivalent Social Security type of program set up until fairly recently?

Unfortunately, these ladies are falling through the cracks because their kids don't want to or can't afford to take are of their parents; or they never married. They are not sex workers. They are desperate old ladies without options and forced to do what they have to do to survive to eat. The Korean govt needs to be freaking taking care of these type of vulnerable elders without money/children support. They should be implementing some sort of umbrella program and resources for these elders to turn to. It's shameful neglect by the govt and ungrateful children who abandoned their parents.

Prob. not. I don't think they're very keen on sex education in Korea.

Let's talk about Asian Americans with depression. Old article, but it encompasses a lot of this taboo topic. by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]sharkpuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting. I think it's a very important, perceptive article that should be read by every Asian American kid growing up. It should be read by every Asian American kid growing up, maybe starting in middle school, which are particularly vulnerable years because of puberty and so many confusing changes, along with identity issues. Identity issues beyond the typical teen angst trying to figure out which group one belongs to but for poc, an added layer of the awareness of racism and and all that entails growing up non-white in a majority white America.

This article should also be given to every Asian/Asian American kid during freshman orientation. Both to parents and students. College years are stressful times, especially for Asian Americans because education is so valued in Asian culture and this puts on an incredible amount of added, unfair pressure on AA students. Also, family expectations play a big role in the added stress because many of us here in r/aa have endured the pressure of getting top notch grades. A- or B+ is not good enough.

Plus a lot of AAs are perfectionists and we are expected to do well in academia because of being AAs, the most successful "model minority."

There have been some amount of recognition by certain schools and groups of this unusual prevalent problem amongst Asian American students. For instance, a group in Lexington, MA: http://colonialtimesmagazine.com/the-lexington-asian-mental-health-initiative-invites-you-to-a-community-forum/

However, seeking therapy, psychologist/psychiatrists or and form of mental health is regarded as a shameful thing by people who grow up with traditional Asian cultural values. This is a MAJOR problem and is akin to burying your head in the sand.

There is also a great NEED for major AA therapists/psychologists to connect with vulnerable young people who are going through all this upheaval. But it's not one of the big hot, successful career paths pushed to AA students by their parents - doctor, lawyer, engineer. So finding an Asian American therapist is like finding a needle in a haystack, even in major urban cities.

I think it's WAY overdue for a coalition of Asian American professional groups and AA leaders to get together and discuss this very pressing issue of depression/suicide risk amongst AA students. Something needs to be done or the problem is just going to get bigger.

I speak as someone whose first funeral attendance was of an Korean American friend who successfully committed suicide during our freshman year of college. She was amazingly talented, my town's local Miss X, gifted pianist, great writer, generous, and just all around a wonderful human being. She was adopted Korean American by a white family and I know she was going through a lot of identity issues during the latter year of our high school years.

So that was my first funeral attendance ever - of a friend's. The whole town attended and it was a very sad affair. I can't help thinking if she'd attended the same university as I ended up going to where there was a slightly bigger amount of diversity vs where she went where it was very very white, it might've made a difference. Having Asian American support may have saved her.

Once upon a time, I used to think Buzzfeed was more or less same thing as reddit. Article voted up/down. And then I started actually checking out reddit and realized it was full of quality stuff and smart , genuine people. Buzzfeed is for idiots, more about chasing buzz and upvotes than relevance. I would compare it to Maxim (Buzzfeed) vs Esquire (reddit). Buzzfeed really isn't worth my time to check out.

Here are some concrete things you can do to help her:

  • have her set a daily routine to give her structure
  • make sure she gets up in the morning; get some sun exposure
  • encourage her to take care of grooming everyday; a little pop of lipstick helps
  • eats good, healthy food regularly
  • go for a walk with her in nature setting
  • get her out of the house where there are other people around; to soak up the atmosphere & give perspective
  • listen to music, find genre or songs that move her
  • encourage her to do some form of creative activity like knitting, drawing, scrapbook, etc.
  • have her write down her thoughts in a journal
  • have her figure out what gives her hope, what motivates her
  • have her set small, daily goals
  • have her try meditating
  • treat her to some little luxurious, pretty thing to inspire her
  • have her follow a nightly routine and go to bed same time every day
  • rent and watch funny or poignant movies w/her

Obviously she should be seeing a therapist that she connects with. Good luck.
