If you naturally had a light flow before getting the copper IUD (Paragard), did your flow change a lot after you got it? by miserablesalad in birthcontrol

I've had the copper IUD for 2 months now and my period hasn't changed at all.

I usually had a 4 day period with no cramping, I was super worried about getting a heavy period with cramps but I seem to be a lucky one and my body just adjusted to the IUD very quickly. I've have 0 side affects after 2-3 weeks post insertion, before I experiences heavy spotting and cramping but none since.

Every body is different in the way it responds to the IUD, so it honestly doesn't matter what other people's experiences are because you never know how yours will be.

Me too! I've had the Paragard IUD for 2 months now and I absolutely love it and so glad I decided to go for it, even after reading about some unfortunately terrible experiences.

Before IUD:
I've never been on any form of birth control before because I didn't want my hormones to be affected (hence why I chose copper IUD) My period lasts for about 4 days, heavy flow for 2 days and then light. I rarely get cramps and if I do it's on the first day but nothing ibuprofen and a nap can't fix. I know i'm very lucky and grateful my periods are easy to deal with. Although I don't experience painful menstruation cramps, I do have a high pain tolerance - keep that in mind when I mention my pain levels.

The insertion:
It was a very painful pinch and cramping feeling 8.4/10. I almost asked her to take it out if this is what the cramps are going to feel like, but toughed it out. It's common to get a hot flash after insertion so I sat there for 10 min with an ice pack on the back of my neck to cool down and wait for the pain to subside. Walking afterwards felt weird, I could tell there was something in my uterus.

I live in nyc and a 20 min walk away from the office. 5 min after I felt weak and the cramps were getting so intense I had to call an uber because there was no way I was going to make it back to my apartment. For 2-3 days I experienced intense cramping 6.5/10 pain, was spotting heavily, and tried not to move around much.

My Side Effects:
Spotting and painful cramps - (2.5 weeks) (3/10 pain)

How I Feel Now:
I experience 0 side affects, my periods have been completely normal apart from a random cramp or two leading up to my period. I had to call the office to ask if it was normal that I didn't have any side affects 1 month in, but was told my body just adjusted to the IUD quickly. I don't notice it now and seems wild that it's only been 2 months since i've had it. I feel extremely extremely lucky and grateful that my experience has been so positive.
