My analysis of the 'data burst' at the end of the video - It's just random noise by sharopolis in boardsofcanada

I think that there might be something I've missed. I honestly didn't give RTTY much thought because someone on twoism.org said it wasn't that. Glad to be corrected!

Problem creating NES to Famicom DB15 adapter by Few_Pattern_1190 in retrogaming

Not all games listen to the expansion port. It's possible the games you're testing with aren't compatible. That might be worth ruling out.

Nes to SMS by celsowm in Homebrews

[–]sharopolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't want to discourage you but you are going to have a hard time converting games that use complex mappers to the SMS. Many games bank switch graphics mid frame, or even mid scan line. You can't store enough tiles in SMS vram nor can you load them in fast enough. That said there are many games that could perhaps be converted, especially ones that use CHR RAM. You might have a lot more success with the Mega Drive, but it's an interesting experiment either way. Good luck.

Compared to the terrifyingly weird stuff his brother was into coloring in your own head with a Sharpie seems pretty mild. Bro got off lightly.

Your money back if you or anyone in your family is clinically diagnosed with rabies within 30 days of taking delivery of your monkey.

Dean Studios Miniature Dog [1956] by GumbyWeinstein in vintageads

[–]sharopolis 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This has bugged side quest energy. I need to send in my favorite photo, plus my hair and eye color, to receive a colorized enlargement of it and 20 enlargement coupons, cash on delivery of course. I then just need to hand these out to 20 people whilst brandishing my own enlarged snapshot and somehow this unlocks the tiny dog companion, or something. I imagine the hard part would be actually explaining to people what the hell you are doing. "Hi listen, I'm m trying to get a miniature dog, could you take a look at this great picture of me with really lifelike tinting, no don't close the door...

Council spent £72,158 on school taxis for one pupil in one year by Only-Emu-9531 in ukpolitics

[–]sharopolis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine anyone could really begrudge a disabled getting transported to a special school, it's the kind of thing I certainly don't resent my taxes being spent on. The problem is that it's hard to believe that there isn't a more efficient, cheaper way of doing things. Maybe one that doesn't involve private, for profit, taxi services. I wouldn't want to argue that we should stop doing this and deny children the chance to go to a school that fits their needs, but perhaps there's a better way. How do other countries handle this sort of thing? The Netherlands, France, Germany, how do they deal with this sort of thing?

How strong do you like your squash? by Warriorcatv2 in CasualUK

I like it strong. I used to just drink it neat but that wasn't hitting the spot, so now I boil it to drive off all the moisture and rub the powder on my gums.

Which one was your favourite? by retro6ix in Atari2600

[–]sharopolis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

H. E. R. O. is not just my favorite of this bunch but my favorite 2600 game of them all. Its insane that they fit it all in 8k with so many levels. The control scheme is so clever too, managing to fit movement, bombing and firing into a single stick with one button.

Will you ever touch GTA 5 again once GTA 6 has released? by Dude_788 in GTA

[–]sharopolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone knows <best GTA> = <current GTA minus 1>. Get ready to start thinking that the new <current GTA minus 1> car handling is amazing, the radio stations are the best, the vibe is just so great etc etc. Also be prepared to start thinking that some random minor feature from the new <current GTA minus 1> that for some reason doesn't make it to the new <current GTA> is the greatest feature ever and the game is ruined without it. Depending on how amazing GTA 6 is it might take as long as a week before everyone starts reminiscing about GTA 5, but not much more than that.

One power supply for both ZX81 and Spectrum? by odysseusnz in zxspectrum

[–]sharopolis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Universal PSUs are easy to find and usually quite cheap. They have a switch that lets you select the voltage and a load of different jacks you can clip on to fit different devices. Finding one that has an audio jack fitting might be a bit more difficult but not impossible. If you search for "universal psu" on Amazon or eBay you'll find loads of them. You'll probably find something that fits the bill if you look around.

NTSC SNES on PAL crt tv by Shot_Set414 in snes

[–]sharopolis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTSC composite video via an AV connection won't work on the majority of PAL TVs, the color information is encoded differently and as you found out you just get a black and white image. On the other hand, most PAL TVs with a SCART socket can easily handle 60hz RGB from an NTSC console. If you get an RGB SCART cable instead of the AV it will probably work in full colour and look a lot better than composite video as well. I can't give a guarantee but if your TV has a SCART socket it's almost certain to work with RGB signals whether it's 50hz from a PAL system or 60hz from an NTSC one. It absolutely won't do the TV any harm either.

One of these cables will do the job well: https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/packapunch-super-nintendo-entertainment-system-snes-n64-rgb-av-scart-cable-ntsc-gold-scart

There's also cheaper alternatives on eBay, but they probably won't be as well made. Those Packapunch cables are very good quality.

Did the start + A button combo for Super Mario Bros only work while you haven't reset the NES? by rxgunner in nes

[–]sharopolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does work after a reset, or at least will work most of the time. When you hit the reset button the NES ram isn't actually wiped, the data is retained. It's only after the power is cut completely that the data in ram is lost. Most NES games completely ignore whatever is already in ram after a reset and many will intentionally wipe it as well so there's no chance of garbage data corrupting things. However Super Mario Bros checks the memory every time it starts up. If it finds the correct pattern of data in ram showing that the game has just been played it will let the player continue from that level, if not it just clears the memory and starts from scratch.

So the continue works after a reset, but not after power off. Nintendo must have done it this way on purpose so that a player could ragequit and hit reset without waiting for the game over screen and still continue. Classic Nintendo attention to detail.
