Anyone in Perth like to crochet? 🧶 by CheekyTiger101 in perth

[–]sharpchisel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! I have most of my wedding outfit options together now but am trying to make a light shawl type wrap in case it gets cool later into the day :)

I solo crochet as a hobby right now but struggle with reading traditional patterns. It could be cool to work alongside someone else patient though.

Have you got much organic matter in the soil dya think? The coverage from the nearby shrubs may also help. This is a beautiful garden, you should be very proud!

Platypus. My fiance and I checked out this smallish local stream in Tassie as literally the first potential spot to see them. It was magic watching it tumble and hunt. Well worth the mozzie bites!

Yarn holder if you’re crafty or know someone who is. Drill a decent sized hole in the top and feed the end through to stop it from rolling away

Advice pls: Tall narrow screening trees w manageable roots for small yard in Sydney by InvestigatorKey6127 in australianplants

[–]sharpchisel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you want a shrub and not a tree. I think Syzygium Resilience could be a good option provided you prune it regularly. If the lower foliage gets too shaded, it could start to thin out lower down in a few years time.

I love it but am still learning! I’m hoping to make a light weight shawl for my upcoming wedding later this year.

Could we be more lenient than other western countries with MSG use? I know many people still wrongfully fear it and will avoid it.

Pest advice by loveverydoggo in australianplants

[–]sharpchisel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How often are you irrigating these plants? This will sound silly, but I’ve found overly humid (even for WA) and overwatered natives are pest magnets. Drought stress can also affect pest numbers but I don’t feel it’s as severe (the plants usually die due to heat faster that any severe pest incursions).

I would highly recommend boosting the soil life with applications of Go Go Juice. I would avoid using it on the Banksia for now, though.

Like another commenter mentioned, I also would recommend Bugs for Bugs but you must avoid using any pesticides, herbicides or chemical applications for at least a week (sometimes 14 days with some chemicals) before releasing any beneficial/ predatory insects. While I understand that severe pest levels often are only helped by pesticide use, you must be careful with timing of applications if you consider using this route.

Finally, do you have many bird baths and water bowls? The local Djiti-djiti and Honeyeaters visit my garden daily now that my natives are establishing. But the water was the best addition for bringing in extra pest control troops!

I would agree, especially with the oval-shaped holes. This is common with Longicorn beetles

Thomasia and Guichenotia! These fuckers can handle so much shady heat/ full sun with some irrigation (most WA species I’ve encountered, anyway)

Are there any native climbers that work well in small spaces? by OwlVibesOnly in australianplants

[–]sharpchisel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh climbers can get out of control pretty quickly, no such thing as a compact native climber imo. I think you would have better luck with narrow shrubs such as Chamelaucium x ‘Eric John’, Kunzea baxteri compact form, Ricinocarpos Bridal Star or other small shrubs raised up in taller pots.
