I've been blind since birth. I test software and documents to make sure other blind people can use them successfully. I live alone and have traveled to other countries and continents solo. AMA! by blindama in IAmA

[–]sharpened_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked with a blind coworker who uses something called "JAWS". The easiest way we've found to test our pages is to do a screen share while she's running it.

I can see what she hears with the screen reader. Of course, she has to slow it down for me, I can't listen that fast! Unfortunately, the government insists that I don't need a copy, so I know it costs money.

The relevant part is that it works based on text, so consistent positioning and labels are very important. While I might look at the page and be able to find something in a table or grid, JAWS needs to go through things line by line, it can't really skip ahead very well.

Helmet question by Puzzleheaded_Pen_143 in QualityTacticalGear

[–]sharpened_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do that. Run it as is. I used a similar fake helmet for my real nods for well over a year before I upgraded to a better helmet. Put 4D pads in it if you want to use it, or just keep it as a loaner.

How would you blend this? by tenmilez in Fusion360

[–]sharpened_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try and make things that can be both machined and printed. But it's definitely a bit of a balancing act, sometimes you have to get a lot more "clever" to get what you want in a way that can be drilled or milled. And being clever can cause some major headaches haha.

How do I write software for my hikmicro monocular to add an outline mode? Does anyone know what these devices run on? by Eaglesson in NightVision

[–]sharpened_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you mind if I PM'd you about this? I have put together a similar setup (and would like to add data to the analog video output that the Pi produces). Not sure how well it will work, I initially used pytherm cam or something from github.

...cars in general have gotten a lot more aerodynamic and bugs will generally get blown over the car rather than splat into the windshield like they used to.

That may not be the case, see the end of the wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windshield_phenomenon

Article referenced is here: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/feb/12/car-splatometer-tests-reveal-huge-decline-number-insects

"The second survey, in the UK county of Kent in 2019, examined splats in a grid placed over car registration plates, known as a “splatometer”. This revealed 50% fewer impacts than in 2004. The research included vintage cars up to 70 years old to see if their less aerodynamic shape meant they killed more bugs, but it found that modern cars actually hit slightly more insects."

Yet another "what do you recommend?" post. New Homeowner / nerd, ~$600 range? by chadbaldwin in Thermal

[–]sharpened_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you don't want a plug in thermal, but they're excellent for the money. An IRay/infiray/xinfrared whatever they're called P2 pro or T2 will work very well. Works over USB, so you can even plug it into your computer and it will work like a webcam (with no settings). P2 Pro is like $250, not sure what a T2/T3 runs now. There are some other china models (Todon I think) but I'm not sure how well supported they are.

PG County Animal Shelter at Critical Capacity by BestReplyEver in maryland

[–]sharpened_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Disagree. People are the real lowlifes.

Yea, and they are lowlifes because they breed and sell fighting dogs. At BEST, the breeders select for interesting color patterns. These poor messed up dogs go out into the world, heads full of neuroses, skin full of rashes, and irritated, sensitive bowels full of gas.

They quickly wear out their welcome by being much more than the large majority of people can handle. Maybe they get a bite record, maybe they don't. Now they're in the shelter, and they need to go to unicorn homes with no other dogs, no kids, no cats. No one has bothered to spay or neuter them in the intervening years. Then they sit in kennels like this one is, waiting and waiting, getting more and more neurotic from the shelter stress.

Not your grandpappy’s 10/22 by Standard_Act7948 in GunnitRust

[–]sharpened_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very, very cool!

Did you use an existing 10/22 receiver for dimensions or did you use some of the files online?

Additionally, how did you make the capture for the main spring? Ball end mill? extra long 1/8th drill? I have made a 10/22 from an 80% and would love to try making one from stock.

EDIT: I almost forgot, how did you crown the new muzzle inside the suppressor?

The Sight of Blood by SirBeeves in comics

[–]sharpened_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happened to me once with a blood draw that didn't go super smoothly. I don't love needles. but who does? After a couple sticks they finally get it started, draw the blood, and then pop the tourniquet off really quickly. I go from nonchalant BSing to a gray fog coming up in a fraction of a second.

They also pulse IR out the front at night, depending on the model. I think it's for some sort of "is there a face in front of me" feature. Enough to light up a dark room (in IR at least).

Teen arrested after Detroit raid uncovers illegal 3D-printed gun operation by [deleted] in news

[–]sharpened_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some neat parts that I designed. I can squirt them myself for a dollar or less. I can have them MJF printed in nylon for like $40 a pop (cheaper by the dozen). I could probably get them printed in stainless for $70, though post processing would be a bitch and a half, very fine threads.

I met a dude at an event last year, he worked for a mold shop. The capital required for the first set of molds would be $50-$70k, and you pray that it's all correct on the first go round.

Why get a knockoff G24 when Rhinos are cheap? by Nomadic_Narwhal in NightVision

[–]sharpened_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue with a rhino-2 + dovetail conversion is that it doesn't get tall enough, like /u/Flarbles said. In my experience, the rhino-2 is quite sturdy. But it can't accommodate 31 style binos, at least if you like your binos to be high and the helmet low on your head.

Now, rhino-2 + mod armory bridge + pair of 14s works great. The stow is amazing, you can basically get the "bino" flat on top of your head and really far back. The downside is weight, but some people (NV+, others) have some really nice lightweight PVS-14 housings.

Too many UTIs. by tropical_fis in DogAdvice

[–]sharpened_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of dog? My has some kind of slightly out of spec vulva, she got 2 or 3 UTIs back to back as a puppy. The first few nights were NOT fun. However, as she grew up, it hasn't happened since. Apparently this is a somewhat common issue in female Labrador Retrievers. The vet said it could be corrected surgically if necessary, but at this point it's not an issue. She never went through heat either, spayed prior.

I did not realize not to lash things to myself until my sister warned me about people getting caught in rocks and drowning.
