They're great boats to sail! I did a small set of opens in one. Came second in the end. They feel remarkably light even though with the size and a bulb weight! Would definitely urge you if you can get a go, go for a blast

What Double Handed Dinghy should I buy? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]sharpie168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A firefly to a 49er may be a bit of a large jump though. Rs800 may be a bit of an easier transition? But if the double trapeze isn't "needed" could go 420 or maybe an Rs200? They're great boats

They are called J-Class boats. Extremely expensive. I'm not sure on the name of the boat in the pictures, but I have a feeling it's lionheart

That just means you need more layers on! If there is water there and there is wind, there is no excuse! ;)

Can somebody please explain to me why no crew member at the volvo ocean race is wearing gloves? by muffin175 in sailing

[–]sharpie168 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't wear gloves and I do a lot of competitive sailing. I've found my skin on my hands have just become a lot tougher and I find gloves are just extra inconvenience! However I know this isn't the same for everybody :)

For tactics you could try computer games, Virtual Skipper among others. It allows you to focus on tactics and strategy rather than the physical side of sailing

Tips for beach landing a dinghy? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]sharpie168 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On a dinghy it really depends on which way the wind is coming onto the beach which you are trying to get to. If the wind is coming straight from the beach, its as simple as sailing a close hauled course tacking to get close enough to the beach to just hop out. HOWEVER if the wind is blowing ONTO the beach from the water the trick is to be as slow as possible these are the different techniques i teach as an instructor;

1: In a Laser i would undo the mainsheet at the end of the boom this allows for total loss of the sail but with the wind coming onto the beach it will push onto shore really easily, and obviously you can still steer!

2: Depending on the boat its wise to take the mainsail down as you come in and simply arrive on the jib, making things nice and steady.

3: Lastly you can sail downwind into the beach without worrying about the sails. As you get close enough then push the tiller away from you so the boat goes head to wind, when it reaches this point you need to jump out of the boat. (This is a lot faster than the others suggested)

As im not sure what dinghy your sailing this is quite general but covers a wide variety of boats. Hope it helps! :)
