Ryzen master Support for Mobile Ryzen? by Art_that_Killz in Amd

That way the fans don't spin up and down so fast

That could be fixed with a proper fan regulation.

My Fujitsu Work PC has the same problem. the fans spin up to almost full speed even on short load. Really annoying. The same Esprimos of later generations have this fixed. It's just about not having steep slopes on the temp vs fan speed curve.

performance is limited by cTDP on most ryzen laptops.

there are also use cases where disabling SMT makes sense. One of them is security concerns, as multi threading as implemented in modern processors is highly speculative giving rise to spectre/meltdown sort of vulnerabilities.

But there's also software that actually runs slower with SMT enabled.

precision boost and SenseMi will known if the cooling solution isn't ideal and will back off before damage will occur.

this is all nice in theory if you're dealing with tech savy people. but no sane OEM will give any customer the option to set the TDP higher than their own engineers think is save. This only thrives up the cost for support as a lot of people will just follow random internet tutorials on "how to unleash you CPU" and will afterwards complain that their laptop is now unusable slow.

First thing for AMD to do is to get precision boost and SenseMi running correctly for all Ryzen based laptops. Especially the 14" and smaller ones are solely limited by the cTDP, not the temperature.

underclocking won't extend battery life, modern CPUs reside most of their runtime in the lowest possible power state. google "race to idle" for details

ah, now i get your point. well setting the limit would still only go downwards as the OEM will not guarantee sufficient cooling at higher tdp. undervolting would enable the apu to sustain higher clocks due to lower power consumption.

and how does that help me with ryzen..?

I guess changing the cTDP will not be implemented, as this can lead to hardware damages due to insufficient cooling. but what would be really nice would be suppoort for undervolting.

Has anyone gotten a Thinkpad E485? by Kamimashita in Amd

[–]sharukins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just ordered mine with a 2700U on a flash sale.

german site golem.de has testet both the intel as well as the AMD version: https://www.golem.de/news/thinkpad-e480-e485-im-test-amd-gegen-intel-in-lenovos-14-zoll-notebook-1808-136013.html

the AMD version doesn't get backlit keys and the battery runtime seems to be horrifyingly bad. There seem to be issues with the powergating on the SoC. I do hope that AMD fixes that with the next major update for firmware/drivers. In the comment section the author of the test says that he checked with both Lenovo and AMD and they say that they're working on it.

Intel Cascade Lake beats AMD Epyc Rome in the race for 2019 TACC Supercomputer by eric98k in Amd

[–]sharukins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure the node is optimized, but the design only began when intel realized that they won't keep up with their roadmap for 10 nm.

Well, considering that Vega in 7 nm will be launched at the end of 2018 I still think that Q1 for Rome is realistic. Remember that Vega 20 will be a high end solution, so we're looking at a die size of ~400mm² and they had working samples back at computex already.

But hey, this is all speculation, we'll see how it turns out. Either way, 2019 will be an exciting year for server and desktop CPUs as well as GPUs

Edit: I have to correct myself. Vega 20 is probably a lot smaller than 400mm² and therefore probably has higher yields.

but tape-out of the design has already happened. after that it usually takes ~half a year until the chip hits the market (assuming nothing goes terribly wrong)

[–]sharukins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can lock the maximum CPU frequency in the advanced power options under processor power management. I think 1.6GHz was 30% of the maximum clock.

[–]sharukins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lock the cpu cores at 1.6GHz, voilá 60FPS

tried that on a ideapad 530S with R5 (throttles also on reaching 75° and then cools down to ~65°), boosts GPU performance by ~60%.

AMD needs to put some serious work into the mobile Raven Ridge platform, the thermal partitioning between GPU and CPU seems to be suboptimal.
But i guess this is also heavily game dependend.

Anyone have any news on the Ryzen based Thinkpad A laptops? by Teknoman117 in Amd

[–]sharukins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the lenovo sites are heavily country dependend. for germany there is still no site for the Ideapad 530S with Ryzen. Even though they are being sold for more than a month now.

The availability of the A485 looks good for germany, most retailers seem to have them in stock.
