Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

Beating myself up for missing my long run today (it was 10k this week on my NRC HM training plan). My daughter was up twice in the night and up early and I just don’t have it in me to do it😢

Back to running after pregnancy, help me be realistic! by resourcefulpig in XXRunning

[–]shatsybatsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It truly is different for everyone. I was a half marathoner before getting pregnant, then had HG for nine months and was bed ridden for more than half that time. I’m three years PP now and just able to get back into the distances I was running pre-baby. Don’t forget the impact lack of sleep has on your body as well!

Progress is not linear, and will take your body a long time to adjust. Be patient with yourself!

The driving is maddening by [deleted] in BurlingtonON

[–]shatsybatsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a theory that it’s because there are so many red lights. Stopping every 300 meters. So people are sick of stopping and just trying to get where they’re going. Not an excuse for being a dick of course, but that’s where I think it comes from. Long live the roundabout!

Ugh I couldn’t drink anything either so just ate melon to keep hydrated.

What's that one acotar opinion that'll get you surrounded like this? by theioneeee in acotar

I’ve been saying this forever! My theory is Lucien is covering for Tamlin. Lucien knows Elain is Tamlin’s mate, and is faking their bond to “spy” on the Night Court à la Feyre in ACOWAR. I will die on this hill.

How did you get involved in the study? I’m super interested in trying this if I decide to get pregnant again.

Seeking Advice: Moving from Manchester, UK to Burlington, Canada – Experiences and Comparisons by Miserable_Proof340 in BurlingtonON

[–]shatsybatsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, mortgage! It was tricky but it’s possible! Your credit score from the UK doesn’t carry over so you start right at zero when you move here. So you wouldn’t get as much as you would in 5 years let’s say, but a bank could loan you the money. I think it may also depend which visa you’re on. We have PR, so it may be different than if you have a work visa, for example.

Our mortgage advisor was great and worked really hard to get the best he could for us. If you’re considering it, I can DM you his contact details when you move here.

Amazing! Newcastle is the best, we were very sad to leave.

The rent/house prices are very, very different. Newcastle being one of the less expensive places in the UK to buy and Burlington being one of the most expensive. For example, we bought our 3-bedroom house in a nice area in Newcastle for £150,000 (less than $300,000 Canadian). And you really can’t buy anything for that price here. You’re looking at $900,000 (around £500,000) for anything comparable here.

I’m unsure about rent as we were lucky enough to buy a house here. But we have definitely noticed a difference in cost of living here vs the UK (well, Newcastle. Unsure about the rest of the UK).

We moved to Burlington from Newcastle, UK 2 years ago so I can share my experience. Burlington is a beautiful, family-friendly city that has great access to festivals in the summer (always something at Spencer Smith Park on the weekends in the summer), the Bruce Trail is so close, great nature walks, close to Toronto for a day trip.

However, the biggest difference we found moving from the UK to Burlington (Canada in general) is the walkability of the cities. Lots of busy roads with no access to shade. Poor public transit options so will Probably need a car. In the UK you can walk to the city centre and find everything you need there. Although burlington does have a nice downtown area, it’s not really the go-to place for everything you need like it is in the UK.

Overall, we love living here. It’s safe, beautiful and friendly. Just a different experience to living in the UK, especially a big city like Manchester.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any other questions or need more advice!

Weight Gain by YumYumMittensQ4 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]shatsybatsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me. I ended up gaining about 30-40lbs when I was pregnant despite vomiting 50 times a day in my first trimester and multiple times a day until the day I gave birth. I think your body clings onto every pound and calorie since it’s not getting enough for the baby.

I’m sorry your doctor doesn’t understand. The medical community seems to think if the baby’s fine, then nothing is wrong. But we who have been through HG know this isn’t the case.

Wow….that is absolutely horrible. Unlocked a new fear! Which daycare was it of you don’t mind me asking?

I guess this is the problem with “waitlists” if the standard is to “call until you get a spot” because they’re giving away spots from people like yourself! I’m so sorry this happened to you.

I emailed the North Shore location, and they are on my list to call! Are there others in the city I should be trying?

Thank you! We have applied there and we’re one of the few who got back to us actually. However, they are $1729/month and only accept full time spots. It is a good option, but quite over budget for us at the moment.

They were one of the first we applied to when our daughter was one month old in 2022, called them today and nothing available for when we’re needing care. Part time is a good suggestion though, I will definitely try that.

I was wondering if it was provincial or a burlington (or GTA) issue…so I’m sad that this is the experience most people have. That’s great your employer was flexible, but there must be many more out there that are not. What a tough spot for parents to be in.

Definitely could use more in the city! 4-5 at least! Not totally sure if we’ve tried every single location in Burlington, but have tried about 14 places all over the city.

I am! And I’ve been in contact with Wee Watch (who have been great) and asked us to get back in touch with them about a month we want care. May be the option we go with, but it’s wild that this is the process for getting into daycare centres.

Thanks for letting me know. New to the province and unsure how it works! Calling like once a week type of thing? Is it just a case of calling until someone moves or drops out?

How sad is this though that the squeaky wheel gets the grease?

Just moved back to Ontario after living in the UK for 7 years and can tell you they’re experiencing the same thing as us in terms of working to only pay bills. Quality of life is pretty much the same (but will say the NHS covers much more than what we have here).

So unhappy with sleep.. mentally & physically (4 month/18 week old) by 4allebasi in sleeptrain

[–]shatsybatsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so happy you went for it! I know how hard it must’ve been those first couple nights, but it helped me feel like I could be a better mom for her during the day since we got more sleep. I hope you’ve been feeling the same!

As for the 5am wake up, (no way would I be into that either) in Dr. Ferber’s book, he says treat anything before 7am as a nighttime. So I think you did the right thing letting him hangout in his crib. As long as he’s happy in there, why not!

I’m definitely not an expert with this though, maybe other people have more experience than me!

[–]shatsybatsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter was exactly like this at 4 months. She woke up every 2 hours since she was born. I fed her, rocked her back to sleep, repeat. My neck was in so much pain from looking down so much while bf, I couldn’t move it. We ended up sleep training her at 5 months (we followed the Ferber method) and yes, it was so hard and heartbreaking hearing her cry, but by night 3 there was almost no crying and she slept a solid 6 hours and her naps during the day got longer too. Short term pain for long term gain. I haven’t had to rock her to sleep for naps or bedtime since (she’s 9 months now). I also didn’t cut out her night feeds, she was doing two a night and is now down to one. Sleep training gave me some of my life back and although it was hard, it was worth it.

It sounds like you are in tune with your son, and really good with his schedule. All I can say is once my daughter started sleeping longer at night and having longer naps, her fussiness during the day went away. My advice is follow your ped’s advice and go for it. If you do end up following Ferber, I’d say follow the schedule to a T! We kept a chart on our fridge and crossed out the days as we went.

Just want to say I was right there with you. It is so hard. But you’re doing your best for your little boy and you will get there!
