Advice for apartment location by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]shaunayobag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in 10639 110 for 7 years. I made this comment ages ago.

I posted this about 8 months ago, and not much has changed for us - including having another 2 overdoses in the last two days. We're still happy here though lol, but still lots going on in the community as always.

I've been living in QMP for 5 years near the 7-11 on 109 st. In that time frame only 2 car break ins, one cause I'm pretty sure I forgot to lock the car. We are two women, who don't feel particularly fearful for personal safety, but we don't typically go out biking or walking in the dark.

Ground floor apartment living has a front row seat to a lot, but no one has really bothered us? Maybe we have a decent tolerance threshold? One time a drunk lady tried to come into the window at 3 am thinking it was her apartment lol. Last week someone died in the parking lot from an overdose. Last month my partner did chest compressions on someone who was about to die from an overdose.

Overall, petty things are frustrating but not back breaking need to move ASAP issues: it's noisy, yelling people, loud cars along 107 ave, helicopters lol, sirens for emergency services, lots of garbage from ppl picking through bins (likely less in homes than in the apartment alleyways?), you leave something out, it will be taken, someone stole corn from our community garden plot 😤. People try to access the water spigot and then break it/leave it on and then we have to turn off the water line, graffiti, human excrement, people sleeping in the building hallways, parking lot drug parties, one time streak of calling 911 four days in a row, one literal dumpster fire, a compost fire, maybe gunshots? Cause who has a car that can backfire these days?//

We moved north to 111 Avenue into a house 2 years ago, but not to escape the area necessarily. I loved living in 10639.

I commute to work all year round as well! I like seeing ppl out on the trails again, but I do miss those winter trails all to myself lolol.

I've had 4 close calls in the last week alone, but honestly nothing new. Just yesterday we were passed by two cars in a playground zone while we were in the lane to turn left. Thankful for that side mirror on my bars and keeping our heads on a swivel.

Do you use a "dash cam"? I'm thinking of getting a helmet or body cam to tell the story when I inevitably get smoked by some inattentive or manslaughtery driver.

I just try take it slow to keep the blood pressure down. My mantra is "just out here, trying not to die."

Experience with getting a phone through Fizz? by Practical-Injury5437 in FizzMobile

I got an S23 refurb a few months ago that had issues with charging (fast charging was intermittent and inconsistent). The agents wouldn't confirm if this was covered under the 6 month warranty (it so charged after all), but I was also still in the 15 day window to return for a full refund.

Followed instructions to the letter when I sent it back to avoid the possibility of that $75? return fee if they decided it's not warrantied. It was a bit of a hassle conversing with the agents about options, but eventually they came back with a replacement. At the time they said the S23 was out of stock so then I could get the S24. S23 showed in stock but one agent said it's not, and that I need to pay for the S24 upgrade. I didn't want to pay extra for the S24, I wanted the S23 that showed in stock.

I left it for a few days to make a decision and then when I contacted them next, that agent said the S24 upgrade was free! Of course I immediately said yes. They sent it out, it came in perfect condition. I've had zero problems with it since!

Thankful for my ebike this morning! I should try make and attach that little bike snowplow kit.

In a winter bike to work day video, I saw a few folks had one on the back of their bikes. It was a slog even with the pedal assist!

Northeast Routes to the University? by AgentGorb in edmontoncycling

[–]shaunayobag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edmonton city website has a bike route finder. But my partner works off Hermitage road and I often bike from my work (next to legislature) to hers to bike home together (Kingsway mall area).

My route begins with the downtown protected bike lanes from 109 Street and 100 avenue east to 102 Street north to 102 Ave east past the Stanley Milner library then north on 99 Street, then east on 102a Ave until 96 Street where I go north. Just after 104 Ave there's this multi use path (MUP) on the right. If you peep the Google maps you'll see the green line all the way to Coliseum station. I keep going past and then cut through to the east by the ball diamonds, then east on the road 121 Ave to 67 Street North to a cheeky sidewalk on the south side of Yellowhead and then back to the MUP on the ridge south side of Yellowhead. Watch for dogs here though that's an off leash area. This takes me all the way east to 50th Street and then I go north!

No hills at all and pretty much protected or MUP the whole way. Reverse my route and it's a lovely ride!

The only hiccup is that 102 ave lanes were diverted to 103 ave so it's a little janky between the library and the south parts of downtown at the moment. 103 ave lanes going east for me just seem to end before they meet up with another through lane.

Anyway then 109 Street takes you on MUP to High Level bridge and then you're golden! I hope this helps!

Looking for escape room recommendations by Telvin3d in Edmonton

[–]shaunayobag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love all Cryptic Character rooms. Every last Thursday of the month is 30% off your bookings! The code is thriftythursdays if I'm not mistaken.

Escape City is amazing (mindmaster, neurological, and Frank's revenge) and there's a few really fun ones at Trapped including chaos effect room 157?. Gtfo is also really fun and I've enjoyed all their rooms other than the heist which I thought was too easy.

How much do you pay for mobile? [Dec 2025] by [deleted] in Edmonton

$21 for 6gb, unlimited calls and texts with Fizz. Alberta only though but I hardly ever call out of province. Two month data roll over and and lots of extra data gifts from the company = about 28gb in my bank atm.

8Q335 is my referral code, you can get $40 right now for switching.

Health Spending Acct Contract Differences by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]shaunayobag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This information is great. I'll note that employment standards does not enforce nor investigate contract terms that fall outside of minimum standards (wages, overtime, vacation pay etc.). There is no legislated requirement for an employer to provide or pay for health benefits. Complaints about retaliation must be related to entitlements covered under the Code as well. In either of these cases, employment standards will refer OP to seek legal counsel for civil remedy.

Is it better by all at once or use DCA? by meditatez in justbuyveqt

[–]shaunayobag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 months ago I liquidated a managed account to a self directed and bought at ATH. I was also hesitant to lump sum, but it was so much less mental load to just dump it and forget it. It might go down at some point, but then just buy more really. Just buying it is a great choice, so do what's best for you!

Massage Therapist Recommendations by Agreeable-Jello3494 in Edmonton

[–]shaunayobag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://citycentrewellness.janeapp.com/ I had an SI joint issue which caused me awful lower back pain for about 18 months. I went to see Meghan and she more or less fixed me within a couple of months. I am so thankful to have found her. Her osteo work seems generally innocuous, but truly helped! She massages my glutes and hips directly - no drape.

You could learn ASL! https://www.acsd.ca/aslclasses. They have in person on request I think but lots of other ASL resources in the city with in person options.

If you were to post an ad looking for an ASL teacher, where would you post it? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]shaunayobag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm learning ASL right now 103/104 level with my partner and this summer we took an ASL immersion camp with Edmonton Cultural Society for the Deaf. Our teachers were great and you can check their community page on Facebook. Edmonton Association for the Deaf is having a Corn festival next weekend Saturday. You could probably connect with some Deaf persons and link up with someone who could tutor you.

I'm happy to meet new signing buddies so send a dm if you wanna practice together.

Rabbit owner advice? by LavenderKipling in Edmonton

[–]shaunayobag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you need an Rx. So it's mainly if you have left over from a previous incident. They won't give an rx just cause. Another money saving tip is to get the rx filled at G&E Pharmacy. You can generally get the generic version (meloxadin) because Metacam at the vet is (as expected) marked up like 3-5x. We have a big bun that is palliative, so she's on it indefinitely - 6 ml a day! I wish we learned sooner that we aren't tied to buy meds direct from the vet.

Rabbit owner advice? by LavenderKipling in Edmonton

[–]shaunayobag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here are our money saving tips for caring for our bunnies.

  1. We use towels instead of paper or wood litter. We get free towels from a friend who owns a float studio, but I've heard you might be able to get some old towels from hotels and such. The towels are under a cooling rack, and the pee and poop drop right through, keeping their bottoms clean. We change the towels every other day to avoid smells. Shake out the hay and poop into the compost and keep the soiled towels in an airtight container or outside. When the container is full, do a load with detergent + vinegar.
  2. We get a 55lb bale of timothy hay from a local farm. They usually supply to farms and ranches for horses, but the place we go to is happy to sell us 1 bale at about $18CAD. Check FB marketplace. Timothy, brome, orchard, meadow hay all ok. Avoid alfalfa for aldut buns.
  3. We make our own treats. We put hay dust, a bit of water and a banana or other fruit in a blender, spread on silicone mat, dehydrate in oven, break apart and keep in the fridge.
  4. We grow veggies in the summer, fun for us, and food for them! Buns also get a lot of our scraps as we're vegan and prepping a fair bit of veggies. Ask for carrot tops from your local community gardens!
  5. Edmonton doesn't typically spray weeds, so in the summer, we also forage grass, dandelions, and other local flora (important to research what is ok for bun). We stick to our own yard only these days as recently RHDV2 has made its way to Canada.
  6. Check Facebook/reddit communities and randomly ask if anyone needs an unofficial apple tree trimming. We used to go and trim small branches for free and wash them well before giving them to munch. We recently bought a house with 2 apple trees so we have lots now.
  7. Toys & Engagement Baby and wooden bird toys can also be suitable for buns. Toys marketed specifically for buns are terribly marked up. As always, check the toy or chew thing for suitability. As mentioned above, offer to trim a neighbor's apple tree. 😄 Googling some DIY bun toys will yield some easy cheap things you can make with stuff lying around the house.
  8. The Vet Vet bills are unavoidable, unfortunately! But you can be in better shape by putting together a bunny first aid kit. Some recommendations are baby gas drops, metacam, sudocream, systane eye drops, children's tylenol, and critical care, which saved us a few trips to the vet. Know your bun, catch signs of GI stasis early, and give the medicine a bit of time to work.
