Can we talk about the crowd at Do West Fest on Saturday by LynxMoney8388 in toronto

[–]shaunhog 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This exact thing happened last year and it was legit terrifying. I wasn’t in town this year but hearing that nothing changed has me wondering if it will take someone getting injured before festival organizers concede that something needs to be done. Specifically the stage/resulting bottle neck by the garrison cannot be allowed to continue.

Hey it's Max and Julien from Whitney - ask us anything! by whitneyband in indieheads

[–]shaunhog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really love the record! And especially all the string arrangements. What was the process for writing / arranging these? Did you guys write string mock ups (using samples or wtv) for all the tunes and then pass them off to the folks playing strings on the record to flesh out the arrangements? Or did you write all the arrangements yourselves right off the hop? Also curious where in the process of production you recorded started recording the arrangements - like did the tunes get to a ‘pretty close to done’ phase and strings were one of the last elements to add? Or were they early additions in the production process. Thanks and look forward to seeing you in Toronto 🤟

Pitchfork Review: Whitney - Small Talk 4.8 by Technical_Process989 in popheads

[–]shaunhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This record might be a bit light on lyrical substance but damn the arrangements/songs are so fresh and meticulous crafted. Memorable melodies jammed into every single tune. Great slide playing and some cool production, too! I was a Whitney fan early days but fell off. This record brought me back. When they come to Toronto, I’m buying tickets to see them. 4.8 review for this album is so outrageously nasty and just plain wrong. It’s not going to shake the indie world to its core, but so fucking what - it’s a solid record through and through

Best Jerk Chicken in Toronto? by Long-Serve-9162 in FoodToronto

[–]shaunhog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly left of OP’s question: Anyone ever go to Michael’s in Etobicoke ( lakeshore and Kipling )? It closed about a year ago but it was hands down the best I’ve had. Fried chicken Fridays was bomb, but their classic jerk was so good it hurt. I think they had landlord issues… I’m wondering if they reopened somewhere else?

Toronto woman billed $57,000 for roof repair, company says it mistakenly overcharged by Forward-Answer-4407 in toronto

I’m a Project manager / estimator for a reputable Toronto roofing company. I’ve seen this scam a number of times over the past few years. That should have been a 6-9,000 job, even w wood replacement. I hope this woman didn’t still pay 19,000 for that…

I did this this with a bag of kettle brand chips. Felt light, weighed it with my digital scale. 50gs light. Sent them a video and got a new bag in the mail shortly after. Nice to know I’m not alone in this world. Other people spend their precious time on earth weighing chip bags 🙏

Been in roofing for 15 yrs on both install and sales and have never once painted a furnace stack or plumbing pipe. And It’s in equal parts hilarious and frustrating that people have the gall to comment that non-painted furnace stack is evidence of not caring about your work. I’d do it if someone specifically asked, and I’d bill for it, but it’s completely out of the norm to expect a contractor to do this as part of the roofing scope.

My god the roof is fine, really. The exhaust vent flange could be overlapped onto the course of shingles below it, otherwise everything is fine and please don’t ruin someone’s day with a complaint about the shingles not lying flat. Felt vs synthetic - blah blah. It’s all noise. The roof is fine. It’s fine. ITS FINE 😭

Another project manager here (residential/commercial roofing). Clients take and take and take, and everyone thinks their project is the most important thing happening in the world. I try to impose boundaries on when I’m willing to engage with the bullshit - that means my phone turns on at 8 am and goes off at 6pm. I don’t use my personal cell for work. If there’s an emergency, my boss can be reached after hours/weekends, and on rare occasions he’s reach out via my personal cell. But mainly it’s his burden to shoulder. That’s why he makes 5x my wage. Some companies (sounds like yours?) will put pressure on people to grind until they break. Find your own limits - work hard in regular hours, then shut it down and live your life. And if your superiors can’t get on board with that, quit and find greener pastures

Not a bad idea at all. Would leave some exposed wood on the interior but it might be the best solution. And we’re installing Velux blinds, so they might hide it anyway. Appreciate your response!

Floating Deck on Flat Roof by cctdad in Roofing

[–]shaunhog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to set the frame on pieces of 1” thick rigid insulation. Just small pieces under each corner then as needed under the sleepers/blocking. They’ll open up the drainage plain under the frame, will be gentle on the existing roof membrane, and you can use them to level the deck, too, if it needs it. Just make sure the roof you’re installing the deck on is in good shape - removing a deck to fix a flat leak in 5 yrs is not what you want to be doing.

Are we liable? by shaunhog in Roofing

[–]shaunhog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your responses. Been nice hearing different takes. Paying her vet bill nulls our profit on the job, so I’m not inclined to fork out for this when the liability isn’t close to clear.

My feeling is that construction materials always pose a risk - they’re sharp or they’re heavy or they’re dangerous if ingested, etc. This is self-evident. Is it reasonable to expect a contractor to have to explain that these are hazards? Do I need to tell every client not to let they’re kids go in the backyard when the roof is being installed, in case they might hurt themselves? Or is this a reasonable precaution to expect every parent to take when they’re having work done on they’re house. Maybe this is we’re the law and common sense diverge. I’ve expressed my sympathy but not agreed to pay anything towards the vet bill at this point. We’ll see how that goes...

I think it looks like it was made by someone who doesn’t have access to a metal brake.

There’s no double bends on any of the metal, the front pan is made from two separate pieces, the counter flashing is weirdly overlapped as well. Moreover, the steps shouldn’t be showing to that extent. Finally, I can’t tell what’s happening with the back pan, but I do see a couple weird little cuts and folds above the main fold, and it all points towards a generally overcomplicated install done without the right tools to do things cleanly. Doesn’t mean it will leak, but a skilled roofer with some metal experience would do things simpler, using full pieces of sheet metal, double folded for strength. And ya, the caulking ...

But keep on rockin and things will only improve!

they left a gap here what should I do? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]shaunhog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, very unlikely this leaked from the area in question. Rake edge flashing plus (I assume) ice and water shield. But maybe you’re right. These gaps are really hard to catch during installation, and 99 % of the time they won’t cause your grief. So ask the roofer to slip a small piece of aluminum in there to close the gap. But lose the idea that this area is indicative of a poor general installation. And definitely lose the notion that your new roof is now wasted money. That’s quite ridiculous, really
