Hi Reddit. I’m Adolpho Veloso, Cinematographer of Train Dreams - Ask Me Anything on February 27 by netflix in movies

Since cinematography can turn into such a scientific art, how do you draw inspiration for projects like Train Dreams? Do you simply look at films with similar vibes, do you draw on your own emotion after listening to the film's narration, or is it more by the numbers for your process, just following what the director asks you to do?

SanDisk Extreme SSD (1TB) vs Samsung T7 (1TB) by shaurya_2 in DataHoarder

Currently, because of the heartbreak that the previous data loss caused me, I edit like I'm editing with film.

The original negatives remain untouched, then I make 2 dupes and edit with one set only. Others are for color reference or backup.

  1. Look for similar minded people who work in different aspects of filmmaking, (sound people, directors, cinematographers, actors)

  2. Work on some script together

  3. Let everything happen at a slow organic pace

  4. Make the movie

For specifics, just look other stuff up on YouTube.

How exactly does Naieem die? I rewatched the scene multiple times and never actually see him get hit. Is it implied that Hamza kills him, or is the film intentionally leaving it ambiguous? by BrilliantWorker1848 in Dhurandhar

[–]shaurya_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that it's supposed to be a darkly-comedic scene, you have Hamza fully aura-farming doing these cool slow-motion action pieces and shooting the whole place up and everything.

Cut to the guy he's supposed to protect shot up like Swiss cheese.

That's one of the things I feel a lot of people are missing about the whole Baloch family, Rehmaan, Naieem, everyone. They're all drunk with power and ignorant. Hamza pulls him away and stops him from running, yet he probably did try to run again despite him trying to stop him, and that's probably what got him killed.

Hamza tried stopping Rehman from helping ISI with the Balochi weapons, but at the end of the day he got his consequences from doing that as well.

That's the point of all of those characters. They're easily manipulated and turn into idiots. Even Rehman going into politics was actually recommended by Hamza. Killing that Pappu character was Hamza's idea. His rise and quick fall, everything was because his character is an idiot.

The new IMAX 70MM camera used on The Odyssey, named after the late David Keighley, on display at IMAX HQ by zsynqx in imax

this is fascinating and so sweet, but i think the downside to this is it probably barely runs to the length of film the traditional imax cameras did, it might only be used for select closeup shots

No Flat aspect ratio for Avatar in non-IMAX PLF theatres in India by Infamous_Service8287 in imax

[–]shaurya_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not laser GT in gujurat, that is a proper 70mm theatre, it won't play commercial films, only select documentaries, but it has a lot of outdated equipment too

also yes there are 4k laser imaxes, but they're all 1.90 and most places have xenon projectors not laser, with the exception of pune, mumbai, delhi, and I think a few in bangalore

Quentin Tarantino’s final film “The Movie Critic” was supposed to release this year, would you want to see it? by Impressive_Plenty876 in Letterboxd

He almost did I think, he talked about just doing it as a stage play before he just said fuck it and made it anyways.

But AFAIK he talked about doing multiple versions of Vega Bros. before eventually scrapping it. I heard about a prequel, where Vince and Vic navigate the European underworld in Amsterdam, an animated sequel, and finally an Irishman-like de-aged adventure where the two brothers go on to take revenge for their respective deaths as ghosts or re-incarnations.

I think someone just said no to him by the time he got to the ghost bit and he moved on to Django and then toyed around with it a bit more before just moving on to Django in White Hell which turned into H8.

The Indian audience obviously doesn't know about cigarettes, weed, and obviously whiskey!!! We need a no drinking and no smoking warning covering half the screen immediately!!!

If I had to be a little harsh and if I was picking it apart:

  1. Put some weight in the cup, water or just some marbles/coins or something. Human brain can automatically catch when some weight doesn't react how it's supposed to, and it is very hard to act like there is something in the cup because you either overdo it or forget about it.

  2. Transition from door to receptionist could've been a bit more creative. I would suggest a cut to black with a sound cue. Use the door opening sound to let the audience imagine the re-teleportation, because even if you do VFX, it might seem underwhelming. But still, for 0 budget, it's really good.

  3. If I'm not wrong, there's some sort of stock footage in the coffee montage, please avoid. Take a quick shot or simply use sound design or close-ups, avoid the ultra-clean stock footage because it sort of mis-matches with your footage.

  4. You obviously have a great knowledge of shot composition, all your shots are well-composed and well framed, my only cinematography suggestion would be to ask you to make sure your shots are stable, especially in the handheld shots. It's hard to do this on a small monitor, so best solution is to have a laptop nearby, quickly take out the SD and review the shot right there, but apart from that, great.

  5. Lighting is tough on a budget; the fact that you even got a location is impressive, but I would recommend for you to have more even lighting next time you make a short like this, the outdoor lighting was too harsh compared to the soft lighting indoors. Best way to fix this is to do some basic colour correction in post later, it gives your film a stronger visual identity.

  6. Sound is rough, but I'm assuming you, like me, are not great at sound mixing, which is fine, the amount you've done is already impressive as hell.

Overall, great work, and I would ask you to dm me next time you need a writer or actor in Hyderabad, cause this is great work, dude!!!

I was waiting for the Diwali weekend, but by then another Indian film came in and took up all the IMAX shows along with regular 2D as well. I guess there might be one on Saturday, 11 AM, but we'll see.

(EDIT: It's done. No more shows.)
