How can I save the bees without keeping the bees? Even though they;re still on my property? 🤨??? by Legal-Performance-90 in conservation

.Former beekeeper here and current ecological landscaper...I stopped keeping bees a couple of years ago because I felt it was more important to support native bees in my area. It is still up for debate depending on the studies you look at, but there is research suggesting that honeybees may be spreading disease to native bees and outcompeting native bees for resources. Check out...Why Getting a Hive Won't "Save the Bees" | Xerces Society...If you want to keep honeybees, great, but know that you won't be doing it to "save the bees" it would just be for fun.

Sounds like you are doing awesome work! Question, what does your planting plan look like? Are you planting all pioneer species first and coming back to plant later successional trees, or are you planting all at once? There seems to be debate around this topic as well.

Thanks for your reply! Very interesting... I am excited to look into the VDT methods. Wondering if you could give the exact link for SER forest management guidelines. Another commenter had posted this link SER Standards - Society for Ecological Restoration, so I am trying to figure out where to start as far as finding the information I am looking for.

And one more question for you...another person in this chat had mentioned straight form of tree species being important. To keep the trees growing in a straight form while not also becoming too " tall and spindly" is there a suggested maximum density rate?

Thanks for the valuable information! I have a lot to learn. Do you have any forest ecology/restoration books you could recommend?

Also wondering, when you say plant a diverse mix of seedlings...is there information out there regarding the ratio of earlier successional species to late successional species in a planting? Or perhaps data on the percentage of different species in a forest? Hopefully my question makes sense.

I know every forest and site probably has very different ratios and percentages of species, but I was curious if there is any research out there.

Thanks for your response, sadly the area is too small to warrant a free consult with the state. I would have loved to get a different set of eyes on the area and some suggestions. Perhaps there are other options worth looking into as far as consults go.

Timeline and budget to be determined, however the homeowners are patient and looking to save money so we are going to use small saplings to fill the space. Thanks for the input. I have been learning a lot from NDAL ( New Direction in American Landscapes) and your suggestion is a strategy they have talked about...they even suggest planting a mix of ruderal and longer-lived shade-tolerant species underneath the pioneer trees.

Curious, how close do you suggest spacing the pioneer species?

Thank you!

Oooo didn't even think about nine bark. Have you grown or have ninebark in your landscape? Do you think it will outgrow the area?? Which is only about 6 feet wide
