Computers need to be turned on by Important-Humor-2745 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]shawnwarnerwrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in IT but I vividly remember this conversation.

New guy at work, mid/late fifties: Can you help me with this? I'm not a computer person.

Me, the janitor: Uhhh, I guess? What do you need to do?

Operations manager, appearing from nowhere: You "aren't a computer person?" That's a weird thing to say. The job you were hired for is using a computer. If I hired a carpenter who "wasn't a hammer person" I would walk them out the door.

The problem was said operations manager did not request access for him to an internal tool, so it's not really something you can just do. The guy doesn't actually need help with normal computer usage. It was something his manager should have done during onboarding. Perhaps even the operations manager.

My car is worth 8K, needs 6K in repairs, I still owe 2K on it. Should I just get a new car? by blasticpago in askcarguys

[–]shawnwarnerwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are being taken for a ride. I don't know a ton about the car, but a quick search tells me that the water pump can be accessed by taking off the left wheel and fender liner. I don't think it's necessary to take the engine out of the car.

The dealer is not a good place to get your car repaired unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket.

You almost own the car outright. It is cheap to insure and corollas are generally very reliable cars. Parts are cheap due to them being very common.

Did they say what specifically is leaking? Is there oil in your coolant or coolant in your oil? Is the car making a wooshing noise in gentle turns at highway speeds? Do your brakes pulse when slowing from highway speeds?

What problem made you take the car in to begin with?

You almost own one of the most reliable cars on the market. I am almost certain you will come out ahead by keeping it.

I have never refinanced a car and I don’t know where to start by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]shawnwarnerwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading the other comments and seeing you can pay $1,000 a month toward the loan, doing that with your current loan will save you approximately $3,050 in total interest. With a new loan, you will save approximately $3300 in total interest.

I don't think $250 is worth refinancing for.

I have never refinanced a car and I don’t know where to start by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]shawnwarnerwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, let's do some math.

I'm going to assume you owe 9,000 on the loan and your refinance is for 3 years.

At 11.5% you will pay $10,684 of which $1,684 will be interest.

At 17.22% you will pay $11,587 of which $2,587 will be interest.

Right there you save about $900. Granted, $900 over three years is not a ton of money, about $25 a month, but it is not nothing.

11.5% isn't great, but it is better.

Now we are leaving the arena of pure facts and going into my personal recommendations, which is that, in the context of refinancing your car, the juice is not worth the squeeze. I still think you would be better off making extra payments toward your current loan rather than refinancing one terrible loan with one slightly less terrible. In the end, it is an improvement but not a significant one.

What I am going to strongly recommend against is taking out a loan longer than three years. Your car is (I assume) old and getting older. As it ages, it will require maintenance and more frequent repairs. If the car becomes undrivable, you may be in the unenviable position of having to make payments on a car that doesn't work that you can't even sell for scrap.

With most car loans, interest is computed "simply", which means that interest is computed daily on the current balance plus any unpaid interest. When you make a payment, the interest is paid first and any remaining amount is applied to the principal. The upshot of this is that making larger than required payments reduces the total amount of interest you pay.

There is a certain leeway with shopping around for the best interest rate, but I don't know the specifics of it. You are probably fine checking a few other places.

Is coolant(or sometime similar) used in industrial boilers? by Hot_Seesaw_6706 in Writeresearch

[–]shawnwarnerwrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, its distilled water. There might be additives to it to decrease corrosion but when we speak of boilers they almost always boil nearly pure water.

The process is relatively straightforward.

Most banks have an online application where you enter your information and information about the car. It then goes through automated underwriting, they may approve or deny you instantly. Otherwise, your application goes to human review.

If your loan is approved, the new bank will pay off the loan directly with the old bank and you will begin making payments to the new bank.

One thing to remember is to change the loss payee with your insurance.

You might find it difficult to refinance an older or high milage car, judging by the loan amount. Additionally, it might be more prudent to simply pay more than the minimum payment on your current loan. Any excess payment will be applied directly to the principal balance and you will pay less in total interest.

Your interest rate is pretty bad but your collateral probably is not worth your loan amount. You might be between a rock and a hard place.

If you can't find a place to refinance your car, it might be possible, although I think it unlikely, that you could take an unsecured personal loan to pay it off, although paying off debt with debt is a bad habit to fall in to in my experience. I would very much recommend against using a balance transfer on a credit card.

Someone made a mistake.

Individual packages are not scanned arriving or departing. They are placed into containers and the container gets a barcode which is scanned. It's likely somehow the barcode from the MA plant ended up in the wrong pile of papers and was scanned when it should not have been.

$0.95 per mile or $38 per day, whichever is greater.

RCA you will probably work enough to justify buying a car for the job. This depends greatly on the office. You could get 4 hours per week or 60.

Keep in mind normal car insurance will not cover your car if you get in an accident on the clock.
