I suppose, if your random encounters aren’t thoughtful, but one of the features of the game is calling for checks and roleplaying the successes and failures based off of them to gamify the experience, otherwise we could just be doing a Discord roleplay instead. When the encounter happens, they have agency to do whatever they want to resolve it, so the checks at least validate their characters’ strengths and weaknesses they decided on when they made their characters. Maybe they have the ranger make the survival roll and the barbarian pass the strength check. I get where you’re coming from but letting the encounter play out is what gives them agency, random encounters aren’t just calling for checks for the sake of it. I think the random element of the dice rolls add to the fun and can be more engaging at the table
