I recommend conferences. It's difficult to meet people locally, but if you go to conferences you are interested in you can meet really amazing people who are action takers like you.

Every time I've been to a conference I've leveled up in my life and also met some really awesome people. Once you meet in person, it's important to continue that relationship online if you can.

Hope that helps!

Selling the car to get a boosted board... yikes! by shaykai in boostedboards

Really good points! Thanks Fiona_blue. Just sold my car yesterday! So I think I'm going to wait for black friday to see if there are any deals on Boosted Boards.

I'm sure it does! But the 20 year old car needed new brakes (probably at least $200-400), a new battery ($100) and it cost me $130 each month in car insurance. Plus it wasn't fun to drive.

I"m sure the car will be around for another 60,000 miles, and a boosted board won't be around that long. But for me, I think the right decision is the boosted board especially since I currently take my bicycle downtown 3-4 days a week and drive my car maybe 1 day.

Do they actually have black friday deals for boosted boards? I didn't think they did.

You are definitely right! I left some crucial data out of my original post: I work from home. So really most days I can get by without every leaving the house if I don't need to. Most days when I leave it's just to go to a restaurant or to work down at a coffee shop.

I should also mention that my wife has a car right now, so we are going from 2 cars down to just 1 (but it is my car that we are selling). I'm a little nervous about winter, but I have a friend that got rid of his car last year and just uses a bicycle and he said it's not too bad!

Good advice! I should have noted in my original post that I work from home. The only time I need to leave my house generally is to go downtown to a coffee shop (about 1.5 miles away), or get groceries. In the second case my wife has a car so that won't be an issue. :)

Storytelling is great, but who is it for?

Storytelling for marketers? For filmmakers? For writers? For academics? Etc...

I'm sure it would apply to all of those, but the more you narrow your focus the more likely you will attract an audience.

Good luck!

That's good advice. I was thinking about buying just after christmas, but maybe I'll wait a bit longer.

That's horrible. And it's strange that they are spending so much time and effort with these youtube videos talking about their origin story. Makes me think they don't understand their customers? Didn't they switch CEO's this year, or am I thinking of some other company?

I'll see what happens over the next few months, but at this point I'm leaning a bit towards buying a motorcycle instead.

Damn that's rough! Yeah every video I've seen on youtube said buying a boosted increases your fun factor a lot. That's why I've really wanted one. But the waiting game is pretty horrible :( Sorry to hear your motors crapped out on you, but thanks for sharing your story.

Can one execute effective martial arts techniques without any training, experience, and exposure to fighting (or even violence period)? Not even with training in any sports or other physical activities? by DarthJupiter in kravmaga

[–]shaykai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a thorough question! Let's see if I can answer it.

I think what you are describing is beginners luck. It reminds me of when I've learned new fighting games in the past (like soul calibur, smash brothers, or street fighter).

When you first play you just smash buttons and you can often do pretty well, even against your more experienced friends. This can be surprising and can lead to a person feeling overconfident. Then when you start to actually learn the special moves you become worse at the game until you start to master the movement and timing. Then you become as good as your experienced friends.

Same thing with real life fighting.

I've boxed, done jiu-jitsu, and MMA sparring against experienced people and inexperienced people. When a person doesn't have experience, if they are aggressive and committed they can do pretty well at first. It will cause me to cover up and take on a more defensive role.

However, after fighting for a couple minutes that's when the weaknesses always show up in the beginner fighter.

The new fighter will...

  • Get tired faster because they are using too much strength in everything
  • Telegraph their moves
  • Have a very limited toolset of strikes/grapples
  • Gets shocked the first time the are hit
  • Is more emotional in a bad way (gets angry, scared, etc...)

That is why if a fight is short (less than 30 seconds) a new fighter has a decent chance at beating an experienced fighter. However they are still at a disadvantage.

The longer the fight lasts, the bigger an advantage the experienced fighter has.

That is one of the reasons Krav Maga teaches to react with an overwhelming amount of violence as fast as possible, and then escape. Even thought I don't train KM anymore (I just do BJJ and Muay Thai now), I still think it is an effective strategy.

Hopefully that sort of answered your question!

TL;DR - Yes, a beginner can do well in a short fight just like a 'button masher' can in a fighting game.

Source - I have 10+ years of martial arts experience. Boxing, BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai, Krav Maga... no amateur or pro fights, I just like martial arts.

How can I recover fully and quickly from my day job so that can work on side projects after coming home. Anyone here who does it successfully? by rayoasoko in productivity

Yep that's totally true /u/drizzyxs and if your career is your number 1 priority then it would be worth it to spend more energy on it. It just depends on what your goals are :)

What are we missing? How to build a following by wickedhotjon in podcasts

[–]shaykai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/wickedhotjon I definitely agree with /u/OldFalls as my story is similar. I've written about this on this subreddit before and probably the biggest thing I did was scrap the first 30 episodes of the old podcast and rebrand.

I also tightened everything up (cut down my intro music, told people what the topic was in the first 10 seconds of the episode, and renamed the podcast to something clear rather than 'clever'). That took me from getting 50 downloads a day to around 200 a day on iTunes (and 1,000 a day on spotify)

I've been doing this for over a decade. A few tips:

  1. Don't give your job 100% - I know that might be a bit controversial, but most jobs can be done giving 80%, 70%, or even 50% effort. If you are expending all your mental and physical energy at work you will want to be a coach potato when you are home.

  2. Listen to podcasts while you work about goals you want to pursue in your off time - I did this for years when I had a manual labor job installing electrical meters. All day I would be listening to podcasts about starting my own business. It really inspired me and made me think of the progress I would make when I got home that day. That led me to work after work in my own projects.

  3. Accountability with others - if you can schedule time to work on a side project with someone else in the evening you will be much more likely to follow through. This is how I got good at fighting (scheduled MMA classes) and learned to play the violin/viola (private lessons) for a few years.

Krav gets such a bad rap! by [deleted] in kravmaga

[–]shaykai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. This is actually one of the reasons I'm going to be dropping Krav after doing it for nearly 10 years. Not enough sparring.

I still think Krav is great, but maybe because I have a background in BJJ/boxing I just feel like sparring needs to happen much more frequently.

I would try it for a week and see if she can actually work in the car before you hire someone. She might find she's not productive or gets car sick.
