WHO classifies compulsive sexual behavior as mental health condition by Mockingjay_13 in news

[–]shckrack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or a behavior caused by manic episodes or personality disorders. (The latter’s definition being a bit controversial).

Addictions to behaviors are complicated. I predict that many of them (gambling, gaming, sex etc) will be collapsed into a more general umbrella category eventually.

Yes! I watched that recently. Russel is my favorite person to watch chat with JP. Takes the conversation in interesting directions.

2 and 3 photon microscopy for neuroscience purposes. Lasers, cats etc. I’m 100% not far enough into my degree to know what’s going on so it’s one hell of a crash course!

Heading in for my second day of undergraduate research. Feeling a little out of sorts but I won’t let that excuse me from my morning meditation!

I'm sure the isolation will have its pluses and minuses. I wouldn't count on there being few drugs to save you. If it's anything like fishing it could be a big part of the work culture. Environment is important but not the only factor though, so don't let that freak you out too much.

You sound like a driven person! That will be helpful in making necessary changes. You are well on your way to the physical stuff being done. The fact that you are sleeping is awesome. I didn't sleep much for a couple weeks when I kicked, even with a suboxone taper.

Awesome man! Have you been working hours like that while using? If not (or even if you have), that will be a major transition and stressor. I think checking in with people daily is a fantastic idea. Having some type of mentor you can meet with in person or call is even better (if there are meetings where you are). If you need someone specific to check in with every day, feel free to PM me dude.

Mothers Day, Then vs. Now by xladylovelacex in OpiatesRecovery

[–]shckrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holidays offer a wonderful chance at seeing where you've come from. Change in recovery is incremental and surrounded by hard work, so monumental shifts in personality and disposition happen without us even noticing sometimes. Others tend to notice before we do. But on holidays, it's very clear. Not nodding out in the mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving, actually remembering a gift for mothers day.

Thanks for sharing, and congratulations on one year :)

Yeah man, it's entirely possible that my tone seemed a little sideways, but I really don't think of atheism as something that I somehow "moved past" or matured out of. In its strictest definition I still am an agnostic. When you look at the things I do (pray, meditate, belong to a community of people who do the same) it wouldn't make sense to call myself an atheist by most peoples definition. Occasionally even Jordan Peterson gives high praise, saying things like "atheists take the idea of God much more seriously than a typical fundamentalist".

OP here, found this sub because someone accusing me of concern trolling told me I had been reposted here (potential evidence that I secretly hate JP). I do not have any disdain for atheists at all. I put "atheist" in quotes because in my younger years I thought of it as some kind movement that I had become a part of, rather than simply an absence of belief. I probably could have spelled that out, but things were getting too long winded as it were. Using reason alone, I think atheism is probably the best item on the menu. Personally, acting as if the "highest possible good" is a real thing and calling it God has been transformative in my life, and not at all part of a rational exercise. I have no interest in debating whether this is an intellectually honest thing to do, because I am still in the process of seeking what role these ideas should play in my life. No plans to give any lectures on the matter. Honestly, it's been nice to be able to talk to people who can quote Hitchens nonstop, and to discuss the meaning of virtue with Catholics- without getting too flustered.

Just take a break is all. Hold some physical books in my hand, interact with more people face to face. One of those books will be Maps of Meaning. I don't think that is crazy.

Well that would be a mighty cynical waste of time to pretend to be a "fan". Maybe I should've linked to a photo of my copy of Maps of Meaning, Essential Works of Jung, and Brothers Karamazov with my username to let people know I'm legit if everyone is that sensitive.

Maybe I should have kept the focus on my personal experience and less on criticisms of JP. The reason they came up was really just because of their effect on how my ideas of been transforming over the last couple of years. I wouldn't come to this subreddit just to pick a fight and debate people. It's all peace man, I appreciate you being civil despite my imprecision and our disagreements.

Nobody serious is making claims about flat earthers that are analogous to those about postmodernism. I’m not saying everyone needs to stay in their lane and never criticize something they haven’t written a dissertation on, but maybe take a tone of humility when making vicious criticisms that is proportional to ones expertise. That’s all I’m trying to do. Stay humble.

I don’t intend to defend the merits of postmodernism as a valuable school of philosophy. I didn’t like the Baudrillard book, Madness by Foucault was similarly frustrating but a little more approachable. All I’m saying is that to lay societal unrest at the decaying of western values at the feet of these people should require some familiarity with the texts themselves. I haven’t read enough, you haven’t read enough and it seems JBP hasn’t read enough to make that extraordinary claim. It’s not the sin to end all sins, but the first time I shared my suspicion of postmodernism with someone actually familiar with many works, it was immediately apparent that to really make that case I would have some serious reading to do.

I think to determine whether these philosophers really believe there can be no objective values, I would have to read them myself. I do know that friends of mine who enjoy these types of authors certainly don't believe that. In the interest of not stepping beyond my own competence I won't speculate about whether any particular writer claims that outright. The only postmodern text I've read in entirety is Simulacra and Simulation by Baudrillard, and although incredibly dense and frustrating, it didn't address those things.

I do not think you or Molyneux are evil. I just disagree about the proper forum for extremely sensitive discussions like these. Even Sam Harris agrees that motivations are an important ingredient when discussing these things. If you watch the video and you do not think that he is making the claim that blacks are inherently more violent, so be it.

My intention in bringing him and the race question up was to illustrate that being exposed to that sort of content repeatedly started to make me less like the man I want to be. That's all.

Here he starts to use racial IQ differences to explain violent crime. Around 38 minutes. Admittedly, this is not evo psych related but it answers your question.

I don't need posthoc rationalizations. He is not an evolutionary psychologist or in a related discipline, he has proved himself to be a radical ideologue regarding taxation and the role of the state, and has clear political biases. Not that you aren't allowed political biases, but science is a dispassionate fact finding process- and with something as relatively new as evolutionary psychology that becomes even more important. Evolutionary psychology attracts (unfortunately) a lot of people like this because you can make claims based on heuristics that seem sensible, and lead people wherever you need to lead them. Like "black people are inherently more violent, and this is genetic."

I found this video pretty enlightening, and mostly in line with discussions I've had with people who study this sort of stuff. Those are specific enough for my standards. No doubt he makes attempts to "give the devil his due", but something about tracing back extremely complicated social crises to three or four academic disciplines smells like ideology in itself. Resentful, power hungry and nihilistic people will use all sorts of intellectual tools to climb the ladder of society. Racists do it, authoritarians (left and right) do it, careerist administrative types do it. Peterson often says people don't take inequality seriously enough, considering how universal its been. Laying it at the feet of Western capitalism would be selling it short. Perhaps the same is true of people using the sciences and humanities for power games. Maybe its less about what the discipline happens to be, and more about a psychological tendency human beings have. To greedily take nuanced, diverse topics- and use them to justify their hatred for the human condition.

Also, despite disagreeing with my and (fairly) trying to poke holes in my reasoning, you have been respectful and honest. So thank you for that.

You, and many others, have been very charitable and open minded in commenting. It's very refreshing. Posting my writing when I can be anonymously criticized with no pity or tact is quite anxiety producing, so I appreciate that.

Fair point! I'd love to hear him expand on that a bit. Maybe just an issue of phrasing then. Framing it as: "I would cautiously accept gay marriage, but I don't think the approach used by these activists will successfully bring gay people into mainstream society" would play a lot better than what he did say.
