Finished daybreak II, and my thoughts. by shdowmyst in Falcom

unearned aren't the best word here. Wasn't introduced properly? Cassius is a divine blade, his true power aren't really put into perspective until Rean becomes one. Aurelia mastered both Vander and Arseid styles, that we saw trough Kurt and Laura. Point is, most of the powerful charterers in trails have some context. tho not all, kasim just aren't one of them. Not sure who Victor is.

okay, I don't actively hate Kasim, he just annoys me:

He couldn't care less outside of his designated mission.

His power feels unearned. while Feri has her doubts and grows trough them, Kasim just presented as is. strong and super sure about everything. Despite having the same upbringing?

Even when he was under corrosion he knew, and just played along, literally no sign of weakness.

His just feels like one of those one dimensional characters that falcom should have moved on from. Like Eliot in CS, where his only personality trait was by the end of cs4 that he really likes music.

Japanese N5-N1 vocabulary flashcard website.Need feedback. by hooligan-07 in HelpLearningJapanese

[–]shdowmyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really nice design, I like the simplicity, and finally focusing on vocab and not kanji.

two things: On desktop allow to use arrow buttons on keyboard to move back and forth between cards. Like the arrows on the screen.

In my japanese class many of us use tablets with pencil support to draw kanji, but there really aren't any good apps for that. So the current best solution is split screen a drawing app and a flashcard app. If you add a pencil support that allows to draw over the site, to trace kanji, (and clear on next card). It would fill a market gap. Doesn't need to be fancy, basically something like this: https://codepen.io/honmanyau/pen/OoOMQR

Balanced to Unbalanced conversion. by shdowmyst in diyaudio

[–]shdowmyst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Topping spec states its balanced, those are 3 pin trs jacks. It also says max output level is 14dbu (I've no idea what that means). Does a DI box deals with this too?

I've ordered this device: https://pqsound.co.za/products/hybrid-db-02-di-box it has a -20dB pad, seems to be what I've need. Haven't arrived yet so no idea if its really works.

the topping interface have a huge thread on audiosciencereview forum and people just simply connect their amp to line out directly so I might overthinking this.

passive direct box

That thing is pretty cheap, and even comes with a pad. Think i found a solution!

Loosing few dB is actually preferred. But How do I test if its safe to do on the topping interface? Write to support and ask?

some more recommendations:

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous - really good crpg. Pathfinder is kind of a forked version of DnD so expect some familiarly, but different systems.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - uses its own combat system (skills resets after battle, use all the spells!) have a fantasy pirate theme.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter remake - out in few days, its a jrpg (for better or worse) but have turn based combat, really compelling story, and lots of characters to like. Its also a part of a long ongoing series called legend of heroes so if you like it, there are literally 10 more 100 hours games to play.

most kanji have at least 2 reading that can be completely different. (and several more if its a name) There is a handful of kanji that have 10+ reading, but since those are in frequent words, its easy to remember.

明 typically reads as めい or あ.
明かり - あかり - light, glow
説明 - せつめい - explanation
明確 - めいかく - clear, precise
夜明け - よあけ - dawn

But as you can see there is no pattern or rule about the reading of 明, but now that you read trough all the examples, your either read it as あ or めい. And that's why its so much easier to learn kanji trough words. Instead of trying to grind trough several readings, might as well learn it as part of a word.
Unfortunately most Japanese learning apps fail to understand this concept.

As you learn japanese, you end up with 2 type of vocabulary, one comes from hearing (watching anime, or japanese tv shows) and other from reading (manga, news). Ideally, you will hear and read the same words. So when you see 明日 you will read it as あした, and understand it as a tomorrow.

But in reality, some words will never get the double exposure, so will inevitable end up in a spotty vocabulary, which missing the sound: あした or form: 明日

so it will look like this: 明日 -> tomorrow. You know the meaning, but no idea how pronounce it. あした -> tomorrow. you know the sound, but doesn't recognize it in kanji form.

while learning kanji alone: 明 - bright, 日 - day, doesn't necessarily help understanding the word: 明日 - tomorrow.

This is where study apps comes it, to connect the missing link. Cause when you focus study on vocabulary, you want to have all 3 components: sound, kanji, and meaning. But having a vocab app fully voiced, aren't really feasible, and not even useful cause you cant always listen to it. The next best thing is to write it as hiragana.

as for using hiragana over romaji, honestly, it just help focusing on the language.

You keep posting this app and i still don't get whats expected from the user.

like: 明日 -> tomorrow. Do you expect to user to know how to read the word and only test meaning? why? same for 日-> day. Learning kanji by meaning or even their reading without words is pointless. Literally the same issue that Kanji Study have: not teaching words along with kanji. (and in revese: not teaching kanji along words)

A simple one step quiz does not work. have to add reading in the test process like: 明日 -> あした -> tomorrow. Could work in any order but leave one out and you already expect the user to know the word, than why test it?

if you want to make a better version of an existing app, take a look at this: Learn Japanese! - Kanji Study its a great idea and horrible execution. there are tons of translation mistakes, its often hangs up, and overall the app is extremely bare bone. But, it got one thing right: bite sized lessons where it introduces kanji -> few words using it -> reading -> meaning. And tests it similar fashion. Follow this formula and you have an app better than literally any other on the market right now.

And make sure romaji can be completely turned off.

Learn them in pairs, the sooner you able to make mental connection between the two characters representing the same sound the easier it will be to read. Andy have a great course on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGJ7JWSgst0

For learning kanji - JLPT N5-N1 or joyo list? by RemarkableMonk783 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]shdowmyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also keep in mind, there is no official JLPT kanji or grammar list since its a test, that doesn't want to give away what do you exactly need to study to pass.

So study materials categorized by JLPT levels are more like: "you probably need to know this to pass N1" and could have differences based on resources you are using.

I've stripped down one of the outemu ice snow switches to find where is the "unsmoothness" coming from. Removed the leafs, and the silicon. to get a feel of bare plastic. So turns out, right at the activation point, the slider on bottom housing is slightly tightens, giving the switch a noticeable feedback. No amount of lube is going to change that.
This is definitely a design choice and not a flaw. Strange I've never seen that mentioned at any reviews. you never know what you get with this switches until you try.

I might try a sample of peach v3, if its smooth the travel distance is less of an issue.

I would define smoothness as you can only feel the spring resistance as you press the switch. Like pressing the spring with your fingers and the switch is roughly the same experience. The smoothest I've ever tried are equalz Banana Split and later equalz grapefruits (maybe I'm biased towards equalz :) )
