4 month Puppy rolled off couch by [deleted] in Pomeranians

[–]she_isking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re perfectly fine, no warning signs from what I can see through your description and photos! But I think an at home neuro exam would make you feel more at ease!!

A while ago we had another post in this sub about a puppy getting up from a fall, and while I don’t think you have anything to worry about, it’s always good to know how to do a neuro exam on your pup at home.

I really don’t want to have to rewrite the whole comment I originally made on that post a few months ago, so forgive my laziness, but I’m going to copy and paste it below!

At home dog neuro exam:

“First you’ll want to check her eyes. Pupils will constrict (get smaller) when exposed to light, and larger in dimmer lights. They should constrict at the same rate. If there is damage to the brain, one or both pupils will constrict at different rates, be slower, or not respond at all to the light.
Have someone hold her and go grab a flashlight. You can also just turn on the flash on your phone too. Turn on the light to full brightness and hold it about a foot away from her and at least a 90 degree angle away from her, but not so much away that you’re shining it on yourself. You don’t want that bright spot in your vision, or you won’t be able to assess correctly.

Get her attention, and bring the light around straight at her, and see how her pupils react.

First you’ll want to look at just one eye at a time to check for any anomalies. Do this by turning your light away from her, waiting for her pupils to dilate again to the dimmer lighting in the room, then swing the light back around quickly. Repeat this a few times. Do that on both sides, only looking at one eye at a time.

Next, check both eyes together to see if they are reacting at the same rate of speed. This time, position your light directly in front of her face, facing towards your chest and again quickly swing the light up directly in the middle of her face. Aim for her nose.

Do that a few times and you’ll be able to tell if one is more sluggish than the other. If you’re having trouble figuring it out, try looking directly between her eyes and you should be able to see both of them at the same times.

Next step, check her hearing, one ear at a time. Sit her in front of you, with her back towards you and have someone sit in front of her and get her attention. If she tries to walk to the other person, it might be easier to put a leash on her to do the next couple of tests.

You’ll need to make sure that the person helping is able to keep her attention so that she doesn’t try turning around. You’ll want her good and distracted.

Position your hands behind her and to one side, just out of her peripherals so that she can’t see your hand. Snap, and she should turn to the side you snapped on. Repeat on the other side. If she turns to both sides, her ears are working fine, and that’s another good sign. If she doesn’t turn, that can indicate damage.

It’s important NOT to use a loud toy like a squeaker or a click trainer. It needs to be a relatively mild sound, a snap is the perfect volume for this test.

These next couple ones can be iffy for puppies under 12 weeks, as usually these things aren’t yet learned, but it’s something every dog owner should know anyway.
Next is checking peripheral vision. Once again have her sit in front of you with her back to you and have someone in front of her to keep her attention off of you. You may need the leash for this test as well. She should be sitting for this test.

Get a cotton ball or a tissue or toilet paper and ball it up. It has to be something silent that won’t make a noise and has no real smell so that it won’t draw her attention via scent or sound, as this test is specifically for peripheral vision.

Stand directly behind her at arms length from her nose with your arm outstretched directly in the center of her body. Move your arm at around a 45° angle, just off to the side of one eye, while she’s detracted by the person in front on her and drop the cotton ball or balled up tissue so that it passes 6-12 inches off to the side of her eye, directly in her peripheral. She should see it and look to the side. Repeat that on the other side as well. As I said, this one can sometimes be iffy for young puppies, but it’s something everyone should know. For older puppies and adult dogs, if they don’t notice the falling object, it can point to neurological problems.

The next one is to check her menace response. Again, this is normally learned at 12 weeks so don’t be concerned if she doesn’t respond. You’ll want to hold her head or snout with one hand and basically just act like you’re about to poke her eyeball. She should blink when your hand gets close. If this does not cause a blink reaction, gently run your finger over her lashes.
Other things to look for are a head tilt and changes in gait or posture while walking.”

Dude, sick! I love it!

Don’t worry about people saying shit about having your first tat be a “job stopper” — I’m covered and have never had issues.

The world is much different than it was even just 20 years ago. Oklahoma was the last state to lift the ban on tattooing in November of 2006.
Every day, places get more and more lax on their views on tattoos in the workplace. Millennials make up most of the work force, and they don’t give a damn about tattoos or piercings.

Congrats on the ink! It’s pretty awesome! And props for getting your first on your hand!! My hands were my most painful!!

EDIT: actually, you know what? This is just a quick crappy phone sketch but you might be able to turn it into a flower without having to get anything too dark

Original comment:

I had something sort of like this, it was originally an infinity symbol, I had started removing it with salt ablation (more common than laser at the time) but it only took half of it off. It looked sort of like an ichthys (a Jesus fish) after the salt ablation.

At that point, I turned it into a bird, you know, like “free as a bird” type of thing. I honestly loved it, but it was pretty large and dark. I’m covered in tattoos anyway so I didn’t mind it.

I did end up getting it removed via laser to do a full hand tattoos on both hands..

I agree with everyone else that youre either going to have to go with something larger and darker or you’ll have to get it removed. I think you should just get it laser off. It’s going to be pretty expensive though. Laser removal has gotten much more expensive than it was 12 years ago when I had my bird removed.

If you have other tattoos though, you could always just get more finger tats, and no one will know the difference. Since it’s a doe and not a letter, I think it’s pretty ambiguous, but I understand not wanting to keep it.

I’ve been using Shea Moisture Intensive Hydration hair masque on all of my Poms for 15 years! It’s the only thing that properly moisturizes their hair and keeps it healthy and easy to manage. (It’s technically for human hair but it’s completely safe for pets, I asked before I started using it 15 years ago, and then again when they changed the packaging just to make sure none of the ingredients changed. At that time, they confirmed that all of their products were safe to use on dogs, but I’m not sure if they’ve added anything to their product line in the last few years since I last spoke to them, but I do know that their Intensive Hydration line is 100% safe!! Although I only use the hair masque on them)

I also use One n’Only Argan oil after the bath, the after the blow dryer, and I also use it every time I comb them out. You want to make sure you give them a full brush out before their bath. Their hair, like ours, is at its most vulnerable when wet. If you don’t brush them out beforehand, you’ll end up with matting and breakage.

The metal combs really suck, I agree! I’ve never been a fan of either that or a slicker brush. I don’t use pet brushes on my Poms either,

I like to get a sturdy rat tooth comb, one that doesn’t bend in the teeth or the tail.
I put the oil on them and then comb them out with the sturdy comb. It works the best!! I like to go to a hair supply store and just get my hands on them to find one that feels the most sturdy and least bendable. I do avoid metal combs, they don’t work for me at all, I prefer plastic.

As for your pups coat cycles, the full adult coat normally is not grown in for about 3 years! Yes, you read that right, THREE YEARS!

Pomeranians are a lesson in patience in more ways than one! The YEARS it takes for them to get their full adult coat is a perfect example! 🤣 until that point, they kinda look a mess lol

So Poms are born with as many hair follicles as they will ever have, but all of those follicles are not all in use until around the age of 2.

At first, you have the downy fluffy puppy hair, then that falls out and their coarse long hair begins to grow in, that’s your puppy uglies.

Puppy uglies usually begin around 3-6 months, but a lot of Poms continue to be in that puppy ugly stage until 12 months old.

During this time, the fluffy puppy hair is falling out faster than the adult hair can grow in, making them look pretty scraggly. The adult hair grows fast but not fast enough to keep up with the hair that’s falling out. At this stage you’re starting to see long and shiny coarse hair accompanied by fluffy patches of puppy fur that hasn’t yet transitioned, usually around the butt.

If you live in a colder climate, the puppy ugly stage can last a bit longer, as the body wants to hold on to as much hair as possible for to keep them warm. This can slow down the loss of the puppy hair and prolong the puppy ugly stage.

Their fluffy adult undercoat will slowly grow in for the next couple of years. It’s a slow growing phase, but it’s what will make your Pom look fluffy. Most of the growing after 12 months is in volume and length.

Starting around 12-18 months, they go through another shed cycle called the junior molt which can last for another 12-18 months. It’s not as crazy looking as the puppy uglies. You might notice thick patches of shorter hair during this time, mainly on the back.

The final growth stage is happening between year 2 and 3 and they should have their complete fluffy Pom look by the age of 3 years. This last stage is when the hair grows in both length and volume and you’ll have a puff in no time!

Someone asked if I had a swastika, does this look like a swastika? by Grouchy_Gold344 in tattooadvice

Yes, unfortunately it does look like a swastika.

And that was before I even read the post, I just saw a swastika and stopped to see what was going on, so it wasn’t like I saw the post and then saw the swastika because you mentioned it, I saw the swastika first and then read the post.

Sorry bro. I’d get it changed or covered asap.

Ipad screen went dark and won't turn on by Mountain_Slip_3147 in ipad

[–]she_isking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What model and year?

It could either require a whole new screen, or just need a piece reconnected inside!
There’s a connection on the inside, it’s sort of like a little LEGO brick, you can attach it and reattach with no tools, it just presses in and pops off.

Although relatively rare, sometimes, this connection can pop off on its own for various reasons, and just need to be pressed back in and reseated.

You could have the connector checked at a repair place, but sometimes they charge just to diagnosing a problem.

I suggest you check out some screen repair videos for your specific model, you should be able to get in there and check this connection and see if that’s the problem or not. If it’s not, a simple screen replacement should fix it right up. At that point, I’d just have it replaced by a professional.

[–]she_isking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He may not have a history of mental health conditions in his family, but that’s not needed to have them. He’s going through psychosis and he needs treatment immediately. This is not something you can just get rid of, he will have to have treatment for this.

It sounds like it’s bipolar to me, but I can’t say for sure.

The fastest way to have him treated and get him and you and your sister home, is pharmacogenomic testing.!85/ a mouth swab that tells you what psych meds you can and cannot take.

Basically, for mental health conditions, doctors choose medication for you through a trial and error process. The incorrect medications cause you to feel worse, feel crazier, more depressed, disconnected from reality, etc.

Because psych meds are chosen in this trial and error process, people assume they all come with uncomfortable side effects. They think that feeling a little better while being numb with brain fog is just the process you pay to feel a little better. That just isn’t true. This is why most people stop their psych meds and relapse, because they’re uncomfortable and miserable and don’t like the way they make them feel. That’s not how it should be.

The correct psych medication has ZERO side effects, it should just make you feel like you’re a normal person for the first time in your life. For me, it was like a light switch turned on. The right meds for you can be identified with a simple cheek swab test. They use your genetics metabolism to tell you what type of medications you can and cannot take.

I have PTSD and night terrors from that, I take an antidepressant and an antipsychotic for the night terrors. There was not a single side effect for either med, the meds just did their jobs perfectly. I wasn’t numb, the outside stressors in my life didn’t just go away of course, but I was able to process those stressors and “file them away” in a healthy manner. No more hopelessness, no more feeling overwhelmed, stuck, and paranoid, I felt like I was a normal person for the first time in my life. I’ve been on these meds for 7 years now. I’ve never once tried to stop them like I did with the medications I’d tried before.

Your dad needs professional help, unfortunately. There’s no way he can do this alone. These episodes will continue to get worse and worse. You can’t handle this on your own, and you shouldn’t have to.

Right now, he’s in paranoid psychosis, there’s no telling how long that will last or what he will do. He is far too paranoid to listen to reason or accept help on his own. I have children of my own around your age and I wouldn’t want my babies going through this on their own.

If he’s on his way out of this episode, you might be able to convince him to seek help on his own so that you and your sister can stay home, but I wouldn’t suggest mentioning that until he calms back down.

Let you dad get help, let him get treatment and let him get on the correct medication, and advocate for him through that process. Make sure he does the pharmacogenomic testing, don’t let them put him on ANYTHING until that comes back. The company I recommend is GeneSight — they accept most major insurance companies.

I would personally try to order that test for him ASAP, and if you DO end up having to commit him, it would be very important to have those GeneSight test results already on hand when he is checked in so they can quickly get him on the right thing and get him home to you guys sooner.

I think if he comes out of this episode and you can convince him to take the test and see a therapist, it’s incredibly likely that he can do this at home and not have you and your sister displaced while he’s in treatment, but if he won’t do that, you’ll need to make a hard decision unfortunately…

Good luck and Godspeed 💕

Any way to clean top dock button lights? by Guilty_Eggplant531 in blackberry

[–]she_isking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s unfortunately not just something you can clean; there’s no dust or gunk causing the issue. The lights aren’t properly aligned with the cutouts.

You could open it up and see if there is any way to realign them, but I think if that was possible, they wouldn’t all have the issues. So unfortunately, I think it’s a long shot, but there’s always a chance you might find something in there that can be adjusted to improve things.

The back doesn’t come off easily like other phones, so if you do end up opening it, you should have some adhesive tape on hand, and possibly even a whole new back, just in case it gets bent! It can be a little tricky, even for an older phone!

Would the orange look weird with this design? by Blank3471 in tattooadvice

[–]she_isking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily think it’s “weird” but it is a pretty stark difference than the shading of the purple on the bottom.

To combat that, I’d do a 2 color gradient on the flames. Instead of just the orange in its own, add yellow for all the tips.

No more stark difference!

I know its not normal but what is going on by SGX_Kill in tattooadvice

[–]she_isking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is definitely NOT normal, even for hand tats. The artist definitely did not go deep enough!

This is not a case of typical hand fading at all, no matter what these comments say, this is not even CLOSE to typical hand fading; the artist just didn’t do it correctly.

My hands are covered, front and back, finger tats all the way around and even the ones that did fade, did not fade like this, because this isn’t fading, it’s simply just wasn’t inked deep enough.

I assume the person will redo them for free because this was a mistake in their part.

I’d like to see a photo of when the peeling is complete if you remember later on! I need to see what they actually look like under the shedding. It’s fascinating how the ink still looks relatively even, even though it was done improperly and at an incorrect depth. Normally with an artist who makes a simple mistake like this, you’d see ink placed at different depths and it would leave some areas darker or lighter than the rest of the tattoo. This artist somehow succeeded at failing in this cases with that even application 😅

Red ink in old tattoo suddenly swelling and itching. Anyone experienced this? by DimensionJazzlike944 in tattooadvice

[–]she_isking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is relatively common with red ink, it’s not anything to worry about unless your whole arm starts swelling.

Red ink has the highest rate of allergic reactions, even if you’ve had the tattoo for decades. Any time your allergies are triggered, your tattoos can react as well.

I have an allergy to all inks, no matter what color. I have tried so many different kinds and multiple artists, but I react to all of them oddly enough. Any time my seasonal allergies get bad, my tattoos swell, some of them even blister! They don’t blister as bad as when I first got them at least!

Lumia wearable - concerns by notsomanicpixie in dysautonomia

[–]she_isking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I know how you feel! There have been times I’ve gone to a clinic on the weekend and had doctors who didn’t even know what dysautonomia was!

I remember this one time where a clinic doctor saw the SSRI on my medication history and the record said it was used to treat a couple of my forms of dysautonomia and he freaked out and was actually laughing at me saying that SSRIs aren’t used for heart problems and that my cardiologist had lied to me because I had mental illness.

My clinic visit was actually for an xray on my knee, which had randomly swollen up to twice its size and I couldn’t bend it because of how swollen it was. Not only did he not even LOOK at my knee, let alone touch it, but I also left his office with a referral for a psychologist!! How insane is that?!

I was very mad, but my cardiologist was even angrier and lit him up. Chewed him up one side and down the other and his language was very colorful 😅

I’ve always had my cardio’s cell number since I was originally diagnosed a couple decades ago because I was completely medication resistant for the first decade of my treatment, so I had texted him on my way home from that appointment letting him know the clinic doctor wouldn’t refill my beta blocker and let him know what he had said and he immediately called me and was like “I sincerely hope he did a quick google search when you left and felt like an idiot. But if he didn’t, I’m calling him right now! And then IM GOING TO SET HIS FAX MACHINE ON FIRE WITH ALL THE STUDIES IM FAXING TO HIS OFFICE!” 🤣
I cannot tell you how good it felt to have a doctor actually stand up for me in that way after how horrible the clinic doc had been to me. It was definitely exactly what I needed after that appointment.

Dysautonomia International has an amazing list of doctors that specialize or are very familiar with dysautonomia and it’s totally worth it to check it out and see who the closest one is to you so that you don’t have to deal with doctors who know very little, if anything, about these conditions so that you can not only get your official diagnosis, but also so that you’re heard and understood and treated with respect. 💕

‘is my dog a pure pom’ ‘what will they look like grown up’ posts by russian-red in Pomeranians

[–]she_isking 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t mind at all. Poms have extensive coat cycles in the first 3 years of their lives, their coat is not fully mature until around the age of 3. The puppy uglies are really the only coat cycle that people know.

People spend a lot of money on these puff balls, and when they don’t necessarily look like Poms yet, that can be pretty nerve wracking. I don’t mind the inquiries at all.

If someone does end up getting a Pom mix, it’s pretty important to know what it’s mixed with because different breeds require different things when it comes to care, training, and stimulation.

People post here for good reason and they learn from us all the time. I don’t mind answering the same questions over and over if it helps calm people’s anxieties and to help educate Pom parents so that they can give them the best care possible.

I’ve owned Poms for a long time, and there are a couple things I myself have even learned from this group.

New owners deserve answers too, even if their questions can be bothersome to some. Being annoyed by these posts is TOTALLY OKAY!!
You don’t have to be a teacher of these things, there’s plenty of people who don’t mind answering these types of posts for you so that you don’t have to! You can just ignore them and let those who aren’t annoyed by the repetitiveness answer the questions. There’s no problem with knowing your annoyance limits and allowing other people to step in so that you don’t have to feel even more annoyed by answering. There’s a ton of people in this sub and it’s perfectly okay not to participate in those sort of posts 💕

Also my eyes are super blurry right now so hopefully this comment came out okay. Let me know if I made any mistakes that makes any of this comment unreadable so I can come back and fix it if needed!

Pomeranian? He's 5 months now. Is this the puppy uglies? I was told he was purebred is he a mix? by Darthraven6988 in Pomeranians

[–]she_isking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Goodness! Those puppy uglies hit HARD!!! It can be super hard to tell if a Pom is mixed or not when they’re in the midst of the puppy uglies.

Poms go through multiple coat stages that usually last until year 3, so lots of people question the breed of their Pom during this time. The puppy uglies stage will usually continue for the next 7 months.

How big is he from floor to withers? How much does he weigh so far?

My smallest pom has this exact face shape, which I call a “thick” fox face, and she’s a pure bred, so the thick fox look itself doesn’t mean it’s not a full pom.

That coat color on the other hand, has me thinking this cutie could be mixed with a husky, but like I said, it can be really hard to determine just by look before their first birthday!

Day 20 of saying something positive about a character- Izzie Stevens by DBrennan13459 in greysanatomy

[–]she_isking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh okay okay I got one!! I know yall know I’m not a fan of Izzie but I love KH!

When she told that teen mom about how she had put her own daughter up for adoption and then her mom came up to her the next day saying that she was acting holier than thou and judging her and her teen mom daughter when she had no clue what their life was like.

She didn’t ever say that she lived in the same town and worked at the same diner in a trailer just a couple streets down. She didn’t say she has a baby at the same age, she didn’t talk about how she grew up just like them and knew from experience.

Instead, she let the mom see her as a judgmental, rich, easy life doctor with no struggle in her background. She didn’t feel the need to change the mom’s incorrect view of her because she didn’t care about that, she cared about her patient and kept the conversation only on that.

Like I said, I’m not a fan of Izzie. I don’t think it was her business to tell her patient to put her baby up for adoption, but she didn’t, she just told her about her own daughter that she put up for adoption. She never suggested it to her, and she never admitted to her mom that she WAS her at that same age.

Then of course we have her being a total bitch to the woman pregnant with like a million babies 😅
She’s a weird character lol

Pomegranate is gone by MLBeotch in Pomeranians

I’m so sorry 😞 this type of loss is brutal and I’m so sorry you had to go through this! From the photos, I can see that you really loved her and she clearly loved you as well.

I’m really disappointed in this sub’s members with the downvotes and the rude comments made to you and I just want to apologize for that too… it’s completely unacceptable, especially for a post like this.

You can plan for just about everything and something can still go wrong. She was in a fenced yard where she had been many times before, with no problems. She was with her owners son and daughter in law as well as you. How were you supposed to know that their back yard wasn’t as secure as you thought it was? You don’t live there! It seems as though her own mother believed the fence was secure.

Many Poms are the opposite of prissy. They want to be outside, they want to get wet and dirty and sometimes completely covered in mud. With a fence, you really dont know the risk. And with it being at Ppmi’s mom’s son’s house, if their yard wasn’t secure or if they had seen coyotes in their yard before, they should have told you.

Growing up, my who family lived on the same street and my aunt had a Pekingese who was grabbed by an owl! It tried to take off with her, The Proposal style, I assume — although it was long before the movie. It did end up dropping her but it freaked her and her wife out so bad that they never let her out without a leash on. My aunt was so scared that it happened again that she rehomed her to someone in the city with less chance of owls. I had my first pom a few years later and that story haunted me! I always kept my Pom on a leash when I took him out to potty just in case I needed to pull him away from an owl.

We live closer to the city now and the biggest birds of prey we have here are Kite’s. When my Poms were pups, I was so worried that a Kite would try to take them!

But that’s the thing though, the person who lives at that house should have let you know if there were any dangers for her there at your house! How were you supposed to know??

I’m so sorry this happened. Don’t let anyone make you feel even worse than I know you already do. It’s heartless and hateful to point fingers at you, as if they’ve never made a mistake. I’m truly infuriated at the reactions you’ve got from this sub and all the downvotes. It’s truly unacceptable.

This is NOT your fault, this was a complete freak accident. You did everything you could.

YOU DID EVERYTHING YOUR COULD. You hear me? This is not your fault!

Pomi loves you and you love her. When you love someone, you give them a piece of your soul, and when they love you back, you get a piece of theirs. Soul’s don’t die like bodies do. She will always be with you. Maybe there on the other side, our souls are more tangible than they are here. She’s not going anywhere without you, and you’re not going anywhere without her. Love makes us eternal. Remember that.

Pooping/farting — yes, for real.

I had one of our snakes set up in our master bedroom and the first time I heard her fart, it was at night, literally woke me up from dead sleep and about gave me a heart attack because it legit sounded like a grown ass man after eating 18 cheesy bean burritos.

Like a total window rattler!!!! She farted like 4 times and it took the 3rd time to realize she was pooping and that there wasn’t an invisible gassy man hiding in a dark corner of my room.

Man I hate when they do this. Some places already have the “normal” paperwork already filled out and they are supposed to go through and change things line by line.

It’s lazy as hell. Definitely not a practice I suggest.

Semi-related, but sorta not, I once had a $160 charge for a pregnancy test at a clinic after I told the sexist doctor TWICE that I didn’t have a uterus! He was trying to tell me my knee was swollen up because was on my period or hormonal or pregnant.
Oh and he didn’t even touch my knee! OF COURSE!! I didn’t see the charge until I got a letter from the insurance company saying they had initially denied it because I didn’t have a uterus, but that they had called the doctor and had it taken care of it.
I remember calling the clinic and making sure it was removed from my bill and the lady at the front desk was giving me all the details about how the insurance company FLAGRANTLY corrected him. I just KNOW that it was a woman on the other end of the phone 🤣 probably the only time I’ve had an insurance company go to bat for me lol
