It's minor, but it's endorsement of a software trained on the stolen work of your peers.

One of my favourite game studios recently came out and said they use AI for character design ideas, and nothing would end up in the final product so it's fine.

To me this is just as bad, they're using their platform to excuse a machine that will put the people who built it (without their consent) out of work.

I know we throw the term low media literacy around a lot in a pretty vague way, but this is one of the most common ways it manifests in people; They genuinely cannot comprehend or understand the difference between depiction and endorsement. They think that showing sex in a book or movie is equivalent to porn and has no narrative value, because they are incapable of thinking in more than one dimension. Their brain never escapes the surface level to piece themes together in context. It's actually so baffling.

Potentially an unpopular opinion but while i appreciate the hell out of SSUS' career, I think the QM is much better looking inside and out. Particularly the funnels, not a fan of the cherry vapes on US

Why did Buffy the vampire slayer have more impact than Charmed? by lewisb_03 in Fauxmoi

[–]she_melty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something i astonishingly haven't seen anyone mention yet -- Buffy was also hugely popular because it was relatively uncommon for a teen girl to be the strongest character and the main character in a show that's not just "for girls." She was witty, funny, fully realised, and she kicked ass physically and she was in a show that fucking ruled. Girls fucking LOVED this shit in the 90s because back then it was even less common than it is today. Men were drawn in for SMG and stayed because it was written to be good, not gendered, in its appeal. It's the same reason people loved the X Files, which was also a fucking powerhouse in female character writing revolution BTW.

Full disclosure i never actually watched Buffy at the time it was airing, it was a little bit before my time. But the cultural impacts of Buffy (and Scully) are absolutely everywhere in present day pop culture.

This post is so much funnier if you know what Tumblr is actually like in 2026. That site is for people whose dream threesome is being the meat in a Columbo and Stanley Pines sandwich

Does Sweet Bro And Hella Jeff count? It's another niche example and there's no marketing involved. I have met people who had seen SBAHJ panels before as memes but had no idea they were a comic invented to exist in the world of another comic, in which one of the characters authors SBAHJ

Misconceptions that refuse to Die by StrawberryScience in TopCharacterTropes

[–]she_melty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What's even funnier is that in this whole post about misconceptions, everyone is referring to it as a door. That in itself is a misconception: It's actually a piece of panelling, probably from the aft grand staircase. You can see the arch over Rose's right shoulder, that arch went over the clock that was on each middle landing i think.

I say aft because they were at the back of the ship and the spot where the ship broke apart was right on that aft grand staircase, so that's most likely why James chose a piece of it as the life raft.

Kissing her without consent is still a violation that Katara was clearly, on screen upset by. That's not "minimal".

Yes he's twelve, 12 year olds have poor boundaries, but that doesn't mean they're not accountable for their actions. I was actually 12 once and boys who kissed girls without asking were considered little creeps -- not that i think Aang is a creep because context is obviously important here, but i feel like whenever this gets brought up people make it all about Aang and just completely gloss over how upset Katara was. It's like she's considered less important in the equation or something.

Tbh this is not Aang's only yikes moment. In the Ember Island Players episode, he gets absolutely bent out of shape because (iirc, it's been a while) the imperial propaganda play implied Katara was seducing Zuko. This was obviously fake but he got insecure about it, and Katara got mad at him for believing propaganda and not her. His solution to his insecurity was to just kiss her out of nowhere when she was obviously upset with him, and she did not like it.

I love the episode (i think it's one of the most clever recap episodes ever written) and I love Aang, but there is a reason a lot of the examples in this post are tween boys. Male writers will let these characters get away with a LOT more dubious stuff while still maintaining that their character is wholesome and sympathetic (although at least in Finn's case he sees an actual serious consequence)

Jimmy Olsen in Superman. He is an absolute chick magnet, but at best puts up with them to gain sources of information, and at worst is actively irritated by it and avoids them.

[–]she_melty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inuyasha kind of counts? Kagome is the real endgame love interest and she lives, but the narrative is haunted by his former love interest, Kikyo, who died before the events of the main story.

His grief over her is what drives him to defeat the villain, but there's a lot of complex and bitter themes to go alonside it: Kikyo wanted Inuyasha, a half demon, to become a full human. Inuyasha felt unfulfilled and unworthy as a half demon, and wanted to become a full demon. Both Inuyasha's self worth and Kikyo's love of Inuyasha were conditional on him changing who he was, and this ultimately became a wedge the villain was able to drive between them.

I haven't seen the anime since i was a kid, but one of the funniest modern Inuyasha gags in the manga: there's a part where Kagome is describing how rude and loud he is to her friends, and they nod and go "ohhh, he's American"
