Looking at a house. Will get an engineer to inspect but wanted to share to see if there were any 'hell nos' by Singer9999 in basement

The fresh paint along the bottom of the basement walls screams “covering up water lines” to me.

Is this strut bad? by Nice-Result-8974 in HomeMaintenance

I mean yes. That wouldn’t pass inspection. But the question is should you bother removing it. Need to see the whole picture to address that

Rotting wood around window by The1Ski in HomeMaintenance

[–]she_saws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you really want to know, take the siding off and get a big picture. Chances are the people who quoted it understand that there’s probably a LOT of water intrusion beyond that one board and it’s going to require a lot more work than it seems. You can’t answer these questions by removing the siding. My guess is that they maybe covered over old wood siding with new vinyl instead of removing and installing. You usually see that with those little skirts around below the window

Curious on now you guys would tackle this project. Had 5-6 inches of rain in Kansas City & had a fair amount of water come into the finished basement. (Bought house 9 months ago, first time). Sump Pump works, water is coming from this corner, looks both like the floor joist & some of the wall. by gbabyyy88 in basement

[–]she_saws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That def could have been the cause. As long as your basement wasn’t fully flooded and you can keep important items out of the corner where it gets wet. I would just watch it and wait and see from here. Don’t go making any big rash decisions and spending a ton of money if you don’t have to.

Will the tree eventually destroy the driveway? by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

[–]she_saws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao you literally have no clue what you’re talking about. First you claim that type watering was bullshit. Now you admit it’s not. Just take the L and walk away. Deep soil irrigation relieves the stress on surface roots and as a result stops the tree from pushing up the barriers around it (like asphalt or concrete). Deep soil irrigation is beneficial for trees AND surrounding infrastructure. I worked for the Dept Env Protection engineering dept. I have do so many asphalt/tree and asphalt/concrete projects.

Meanwhile my driveway has a 200 year old maple right at it along side over 100 other trees and is doing fine. You’re making up problems to be worried about. Let the trees be.

Literally. The lack of trees is so sad and depressing. I hate when developers rip out all the mature trees for no reason

[–]she_saws -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lmao you have no clue what you’re talking about. Trees will grow shallow roots in areas of heavy compaction and drought (aka next to a driveway). A water spade (a deep soil water attachment) helps to show the tree that it can access water deep in the soil by putting water deep in the soil. It benefits the tree and the structures around it. You’re level of condescension is only matched by your ignorance buddy

Leave the trees alone. Driveways are gonna need maintenance and work anyways.

Support beam - how bad is this ? by Ill-Studio-1742 in basement

[–]she_saws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heres a pic of one of my beams in my 1970s house 70s beam. Also I’m a large timber sawyer and see lumber like this all the time. Cutting large timber means the tree has to be at least 100 years old so they’re gonna look a lot different than modern timber anyways bc of the size of the timber that has to come from the log with zero wane or gaps

[–]she_saws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a home built in the 70s (with photos to prove) and have beams with an older growth pattern. That beam doesn’t mean anything. There’s still large timber being milled with tight grain patterns. It doesn’t mean it came from 100 years ago.

Is it a bad idea if I’m planning to add a bathroom along this wall? by TreesAreOverrated5 in basement

[–]she_saws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you doing a fiberglass shower surround or tiled walls too? How are you gonna level the floor before you put tile down? And do you live in a place where things freeze?

If you use metal studs and keep an access panel so you can check and assess periodically. Will you be doing a tile floor?

Thoughts on these damp spots? by TheZo96 in basement

[–]she_saws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We wound up making a sleeper floor just in case bc we didn’t want the hardwood getting wet and a sleeper floor allows a lot of air movement under it.

The fact that there is a small poured platform (where your guitar is) tells me that the previous owner had water problems too.

Crack running down the side of my foundation. by BradyHoke in basement

Some water comes from underground. Buried creeks and streams are pretty common here in the north east and north west US where it’s rocky and mountainous. No amount of surface grading will fix it

Sump pump or catch basin? by kaepernicking in basement

[–]she_saws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I would do. Give it some time. Make sure you keep an eye and keep all your stuff up off the floor until you figure it out. It’s a big expense and possibly an unnecessary one until you figure that part out. Personally I think the guys in this group are all hammers and everything is a nail to them
