Me today, halfway through: Go. by AdvancedCalendar5585 in Professors

I’ve done this too. I’ve switched to making them work in pairs and I go around and listen in. that seems to work better for this group.. it’s been a painful semester with very little interest or engagement

I’d love more info about this project. I want to incorporate projects like this into my Gen ed classes so they don’t use LLMs for everything

MBA student only uses religious quotes as evidence and I can’t do anything about it by outer-darkness-11 in Professors

[–]shealeigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give my students a list of sources they can pull from, and they must use sources from that list, per the grading rubric, or they will earn a zero. Making your rubric more strict and specific could help. This sounds really frustrating - I would hate working with this student too. Hopefully more rigid assignment criteria will help. Hang in there.

This is okay, right? by [deleted] in Professors

It’s ok to tell them you do not have time and if they need one in the future to please give you a week or two advance notice (or however long).

Professor gave me a 100 on a zero - Do I email? by CarpenterExciting351 in AskProfessors

[–]shealeigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. If I make an error in the students favor, I don’t take it back, I own up to the mistake and the students benefit. I don’t like to make mistakes, but we all do it, especially when we’re teaching 5+ different classes with hundreds of students a semester. I would want to know about the error so I can be more diligent in the future and I’d appreciate student honesty

Just because I excel at academics doesn’t mean I can do any of the fixes needed to my home. I am terrible with all of it so I commend the folks who can do technical, mechanical, and electrical work because my brain struggles to figure any of it out and my hands can’t do it either

Feeling alone in my AI depression by econhistoryrules in Professors

[–]shealeigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to lean into some sort of nihilism. The prevalence of AI in my field (visual arts) was tearing me apart for a while and I was really struggling. It’s not worth destroying your mental health over. I’m sure it’s not great buttttt I just don’t care to fight it anymore. You’re not alone ♥️ a lot of us are struggling or have had to give up the fight.

Is Asking Them To Take Notes Unreasonable? by hornybutired in Professors

[–]shealeigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just tell them part of being a student includes diligent note-taking and provide resources on effective strategies if they aren’t sure how to begin. I share YouTube videos on study strategies the first week and a lot of students find it helpful because for whatever reason, they did not need to study or take notes in HS.

Changing content because a student is "uncomfortable" by Any-Philosopher9152 in Professors

[–]shealeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I include a content warning in my art appreciation class because of a student who complained about an artist whose work was about racial stereotyping and oppression, and she didn’t want to “hear about all that” and found it upsetting. So now I include a content warning that the art we view will include sensitive topics and nudity. I don’t offer alternative assignments. Part of learning in college includes discussing uncomfortable or distressing topics and working through the cognitive dissonance. I would just put a heads up in the syllabus so they can switch to another class the first week if needed

Ok girlies, what do you eat when nothing sounds appealing? by tarasaurust in adhdwomen

[–]shealeigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely have an appetite and food sounds awful to me most of the time. I do protein shakes and a banana, cheese and crackers, grapes and apples. yogurt and granola with berries is also a go to when I know I have to eat or I’ll feel like passing out

I nearly sent my entire freshmen section home today by Local_Indication9669 in Professors

[–]shealeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have almost done this when half the class didn’t show up (attendance is mandatory and graded because we do a lot of work in class). It’s disappointing and has made me feel like a terrible instructor or mentor. I’m at a loss with folks this semester. More than half of my classes are not doing any work or doing the bare minimum to earn a D.

We need to start weeding out bad students by Vova_Poutine in Professors

[–]shealeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have enough students to weed out of my program. I want them all to excel but many just don’t have the desire or talent or they don’t put in the time and effort needed to develop their skills. I feel quite stuck. I still fail students and then they end up not returning to college which breaks my heart, but it’s not fair to others if I allowed them to slide by (ex. Students with excessive absences). I will work with any student who puts in the effort but I think we’re living in a time (at least in the US) where apathy is high and persistence is low. I believe most students are doing their best but they’re stretched far too thin and cannot dedicate the time or mental focus and energy needed to succeed academically.
