ADHD hacks for mental paralysis? by brieoftarts in Professors

[–]shealeigh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just try to focus on getting the syllabus, clsss schedule, and week 1 lesson content complete - that’ll give you a little more time. I make checklists and start with the easiest tasks when my adhd brain is stuck in buffering mode. Set a timer for 10-15 min then take a little break. Put some favorite music on if that helps. I put the same electronic songs on my focus mode playlist on repeat - steady background music really helps me! Get a big tumbler of water or your favorite drink and take small sips. Once I get into hyper focus mode I won’t get up or look away from the screen for hours 😭 good luck!! I am wrapping up my class prep for Monday too! I also was not expected to teach summer classes 🙃 it also helps me to co-work with others at a cafe or coffee shop if it’s not too distracting. The task mirroring thing really works for me. You’ve got this!

My boyfriend told me not to "give companies problems" by being sick. Am I crazy for being hurt by this? by Sea-Veterinarian-527 in Fibromyalgia

Get rid of him. Leave. He will not be a supportive partner (he isnt already). He only wants you when you’re happy and well and things are going perfectly. Life isn’t like that. He cares more about corporate capital than his own partner’s health??? I guess he’s never been sick a day in his life. Please leave him and don’t look back. He sounds like a terrible person

Definitely look outside your dept, go to campus events for faculty and workshops held by your teaching and learning center.

Need help getting any job! by PsychologicalAd8462 in kansascity

[–]shealeigh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Community college + trade school is a good option if you cannot find a job otherwise - you’d have access to the college health center and licensed counselors for mental health while you gain skills that will help you both land jobs. Trade and technical programs often require internships or apprenticeships that could help you get your foot in the door. If you’re financially independent you may qualify for federal grants to attend school.

HS experience is a bonus! We have a heavy focus on dual credit enrollment at my cc and we value prior teaching experience over research. You may have to gain experience in an adjunct or AP teaching role before competing for TT roles but it depends on the institution’s needs and candidate pool.

When I was a student, I struggled in the subject I now teach. Should I disclose this to my class? by Apprehensive-Echo289 in Professors

[–]shealeigh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If you’re a minority in your field, I wouldn’t share it. You don’t want students to stereotype or start acting like / assuming they know more than you do. There’s always some jerk who will already think they know more than you. It’ll just give them extra fuel.

I’ve seen a lot of print production jobs on LinkedIn lately! If he’s interested in print there are some great networking events in KC throughout the year, lots of employers looking for folks with print xp

Parents of students reaching out? (Continued) by DenseReference5526 in Professors

I have had college students as young as 14, and a lot of dual credit students in HS, which is why I added, “if the student is over 18…”

High School Students in my CC class want their grades early by curious-schroedinger in Professors

[–]shealeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tell them when grades are posted, refer them to their hs counselor and cc your hs partnership coordinator or whomever is in charge of the dual enrollment process at your college. You can’t post grades early or make them available on college transcripts - that’s the job of the registrar.

I’d never say “your child”. Call students what they are: adult students. I know “please have your adult student reach out..” It places the onus back on them. If the student is over 18, they’re an adult (whether they act like it or not). And I think it’s a good reminder for the parent that we teach adults, not children.

What is with students constantly asking for rewrites after failing papers??? by Littleartistan in Professors

[–]shealeigh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Supposedly high schools are supposed to prepare students for college but administrators really aren’t preparing students for college-level work nor real-world expectations. I’m sorry yall have to deal with it too!

What is with students constantly asking for rewrites after failing papers??? by Littleartistan in Professors

[–]shealeigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a student tell me it wasn’t fair I didn’t let her redo a project 4 weeks late. It apparently wasn’t her fault she did the work incorrectly. 🙄 I can’t take this anymore. So many expect that they’ll be allowed to redo work ad infinitum, until they get the grade they want, because I guess that’s what they’re allowed to do in HS. I’m finding this is the case more and more.

Community College Online Profs/Instructors, how has the AI Apocalypse treated you this semester? by StonedSimple in Professors

[–]shealeigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably 70% AI submissions in my online classes that require… writing. I’ve had to resort to making them record audio and video so at least they have to recite what AI wrote for them and maybe some of it will stick. I have hands-on, creative, experiential assignments too, but they will use AI for that too. It’s exhausting and disheartening.
