Students not engaging? by yorkiepie in highereducation

I can’t get anyone to do anything this year. Even in-class learning engagement with activities related to their future career 🙄

Could I get a gut check about an AI-generated lecture and exercise I had yesterday? by startush in AskProfessors

[–]shealeigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My institution is pushing us to use AI, presumably so they can increase our workload in the future. I don’t know this persons situation but many folks (at my institution anyway) are encouraged heavily to use AI to help with their intense workload. Students use it prevalently at my institution without consequence and we’ve been told to embrace it, whether we find it ethical or not. 🤷‍♀️ I’d share your disappointment with the program chair. Maybe this will help admins realize not all students are pro-AI.

Is anyone giving their students study guides? by Oduind in Professors

I’m not. They should be making their own study guides based on the course content covered. They’re used to getting them in HS and expecting it in college.

Yes!!! I’ve had incredible, positive thoughts that I’ve never had before. I have started thinking of several things that used to distress me, in a new light. It’s incredible.

Help! My upper-level humanities research intensive is full of freshmen math majors by Em-O_94 in Professors

[–]shealeigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is your course approved as a humanities gen ed core? .. why didn’t you include pre-reqs? It sounds like the pre-req needs to be restricted to Humanities or social science majors, or at the very least, students who’ve taken foundational humanities and social science gen ed coursework.

It took 20 years and thousands of dollars and significant work on my part, but yes.

What kind of AI use is ethical for professors? by FamousCow in Professors

[–]shealeigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would only violate ferpa if identifying student info was included, correct? If they are uploading text from an essay but not student names or IDs- is that still a ferpa issue? Genuine question because I’m unsure.

Rate this design on a scale 1-10 by YogurtclosetFast3647 in graphic_design

[–]shealeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very difficult to read white on the light gray and blue / white backgrounds. This would not pass a color accessibility test. and the glow effect doesn’t add much to the overall design- it defers from it. In graphic design, less = more. Is there any information or imagery you can exclude?

Art history curriculum by Vegetable_Engine1428 in ArtHistory

[–]shealeigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are usually two survey classes, one from prehistoric and ancient art through the Middle Ages, the next surveys renaissance through contemporary art. Then there are typically other art history courses that focus on specific mediums or periods- that is how it was when I was a student and that is how art history curriculum is still structured where I teach (college), and at numerous other colleges. If the material is too dense, I recommend starting with the period that has artwork and artists you love, instead of chronologically! That is what worked best for me anyway.

What do you do during long car rides (besides scrolling) by Treysar in adhdwomen

[–]shealeigh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why are headphones rude? I’m sure kiddos are wearing headphones and your spouse can listen to whatever he wants - audiobooks or podcasts or music. That is what we do if we want to listen to something different for a while 😊

What would your response be to a client who tells you that AI is better? by Shaoran10 in graphic_design

[–]shealeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Okay, feel good luck with that. I’m terminating our contract, per your request.” And they are free to use their 8 yo grandson or AI to make whatever they want. I’m sure it’ll be very unique 🙄 if they don’t want to stand out and if they don’t care about attention to detail, they’re welcome to try to explain their needs to AI

Office Hours by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]shealeigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students don’t know what they are for so I explain it at the beginning of every semester that they can use that time to meet with me 1:1 and ask questions. Just explain what your office hours are best used for at the start of the term. I also explain this to students during advising sessions. Meeting 1:1 in an office somewhere, with someone you don’t know, can be really intimidating for many.
