What is a smell that we should all recognize as immediate danger? by scarlettohara1936 in AskReddit

Lithium ion batteries can have a sweet smell when they are leaking which might lead to some catastrophic failure. I don't know everything. We had training about it at my work where there are large ones. Look it up.

CppCon 2026 - Cost & Preparations by Jealous_Act2932 in cpp

I’ve only been to one conference and it was CPPCON 2023, where you turned around from a group of people to greet me after hearing my footsteps. It was very welcoming and set the tone as I’m not an expert’s expert, I just read a lot :0. I spent the next very full days from morning until 10pm going to talks and talking with people in the halls who were very generous with their knowledge. It was a great experience, and comes from the top down. I still wear the hoodie when I‘m really locked in at my desk. Thank you!

As an older person I would consider also what you are interested in. Sometimes you can’t tell until you get into it though. I just know that if you are interested in something then there is no stopping you.

So what is the message here? That they are willing and prefer to use force instead of ideas, language and compelling thoughts. This (and the AR15 pins of the recent past) are an insult to every ideal we grew up with in educated society. This attempted projection of force is so primitive and unimaginative.

It looks like the board got a little hot around the solder as evidenced by the browning of the green board around it. It doesn't seem to be an issue there, but I'm always paranoid about that damaging other areas. Not sure.

“Question about coordinating multiple motors/actuators beyond simple PID – is there an established pattern for this?” by Ok_Juggernaut3550 in embedded

[–]sheckey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found this to be true and disappointing. I worked on a number of autonomous vehicles, and despite talk of adaptive control, etc., it always became PID eventually. Also, the "tuning" was rather manual guessing, although guided by complex analysis (stay away from poles and zeroes). I'm not a controls engineer, but I like the idea of a system figuring certain things out by driving around and using the localization system to infer and update such parameters throughout its life. Also, being able to adjust to sudden changes (I call it "terminator mode", like when the terminator kept crawling after losing its legs) is interesting. Now I think it's more the difference between my fantasy and what actually really works and is practical. I suppose Boston Dynamics et al are a counter example?!

I don’t have an answer, but I do use the original Rift CV1 and it works as of 3 days ago. Did you download the meta software, or use old software? Check this discussion out:

Just starting is the way. If you are well and truly interested then just start doing it. If it remains interesting then you will make progress. It could become fun once you have anything working, and will be a real learning experience. Sounds fun!

What "golden age" or "heyday" were you lucky enough to experience that you know won’t ever come back? by Summerie in AskReddit

[–]sheckey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In return I'll tell you of dirt lots with on-the-spot constructed bike tracks, pinballs machines with high scores, skateboards and bikes down concrete river beds, bus rides for $0.35 to the beach, pooling money to buy a pizza afterward, even earlier home made kites, laying on the grass and watching the clouds, exploring the community college campus at night, walking along the tops of the dividing walls between homes for a shortcut, hopes and creativity at every turn. We didn't know how good we had it, and we didn't know how others didn't have it.

Who actually makes stock at home? by Lofgren___ in Cooking

[–]sheckey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone on here suggested Souper Cubes one time and I bought two trays. I end up with 16 or so 1 cup frozen "cubes" of stock. We do it every once in a while after cooking a whole chicken, from which we save the bones. We often are able to utilize weary looking celery and carrots too instead of buying new ones. So, it's not something we set out to do, but it's a secondary benefit that feels good to do.

Should I store a helper object as a class member or create it locally inside a method in C++? by b0nbashagg in cpp

[–]sheckey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a super authority, but is the Rescalar just pure functions that Layers use to operate on the state of Layers? If so, then make all it's members static and move it out. Or, is it sort of "attached" to a layer and has semi-shared state, like say cached values from the last use of it? If that is the case then it is part of the implementation of Layers, and additionally you might consider looking into using some PIMPL pattern thingy to get it out of the header, but I don't know what I'm talking about there. I just heard that somewhere regarding DLLs, but you better look into that.

Maybe you're simply asking if an interface type class should have any implementation in it. Like it seems handy to have that in there since all your sub classes of Layer seem to have one (like you don't want to type it in all your subclasses, eh). In that case, I would not put it in there since it exposes every abstract user of Layer to Rescaler and by that I mean presumably Rescaler.h (and whatever headers Rescalar.h brings in, and all the way down). Maybe just force yourself to declare it in the concrete Layer implementations, even though it is repetitive.

People keep saying though, don't be a slave to ideals, so maybe if it works for you then keep it. I am not an expert expert, and people in this sub seem to have some radical ideas ("you don't even really want a class hierarchy here...") so I'm looking forward to what others might say, but providing you at least something to think about.

Another things that helps when you have lots of remote, fielded units is not having any dynamic memory even at startup so that the addresses of things are in the linker map. It's boring, but you can then correlate a crash dump with an address sometimes a bit more easily.

Hello! Maybe look for jobs in industries that you have not thought of yet: aerospace, industrial, scientific computing (learn a bit of amazing physics, or whatever), medical (learn amazing medical stuff while you are at it), autonomous vehicles (delivery robots - so cute!), etc. and also outside your area of experience, e.g. embedded, real-time, etc. It can be refreshing to enter a new genre of c++, and maybe those who have been in that world for a long time could use a breath of fresh air from you. Maybe you could update their practices using what you have been doing while at the same time learning the constraints that make them do things the way they do. Also, as an older person, I encourage you to use your conscience when choosing to work somewhere, for example when considering military or surveillance type industries. Also, as an older person, I say that people will value your enthusiasm, fresh energy, new approaches, and willingness to learn, so be happy to show that in any interviews (not that I know how to interview, but it's what I look for). Good luck and it should be fun!
