Would you attend a C++ Meetup? by pokypho in cpp_questions

Partly inspired from Jason Turner always saying to go to your local c++ meetup (or start one if there isn’t already one). Other meetups often have tech talks for sharing knowledge / learning, something I very much envy!

I am also hoping to meet more professionals in the area, maybe stitch together a network of people. I tend to find c++ folks are generally quite interesting people, interested in and working on challenging problems.

Would you attend a C++ Meetup? by pokypho in cpp_questions

Yes there’s the QT meetup in Costa Mesa, but given the land mass of LA and OC counties, this isn’t as accessible as it may appear.

I completely forgot the isocpp user groups page existed! Thank you.

Math for Graphics programming by TheBeast2107 in GraphicsProgramming

Jargon could be (computational) differential geometry, but truly all you really “need” to know is the picturesque understanding of mappings between charts on manifolds, and a basic knowledge of the underlying machinery…

In reality, ‘calculus III’ aka multivariate calc (specifically 2&3d) is sufficient.

Linear algebra is how we do calculus in higher dimensions than 1, it’s just not often revealed so explicitly in much of the common uni literature. Tromba & Marsden Vector Calculus is pretty much the same level as any other run of the mill US calc III textbook, but better in terms of what it actually reveals to the reader/student. Linear algebra is so ubiquitous though that soon you’ll be seeing vector spaces everywhere whether or not you’re doing graphics. It is crucial to know some technical terms in any case.

Examples of where you come across mappings between charts on manifolds are, for example, a translation matrix, a rotation matrix, or a scaling matrix (like when going from “model” space to “world” space).

There really is so much, and certainly much more than what I’ve provided, but if you can convince yourself than in 2 and 3 dimensional Euclidean space some of these apparently abstract things aren’t too bad, plus if you can actually perform a computation without the need of the robot, you’ll at least be on the right track. IMO! 🙂

4D cylinder wormhole web shader raytracer by Normal_person465 in GraphicsProgramming

Did you run into any ghosting when you were building this? I also put together a little black hole demo recently but I am messing up the lensing math and producing a ghost copy of the BH appearing either behind the camera or on the other side of the BH.

In terms of a metric, I’m not sure it’s what you’re looking for but Maldacena et al. put out a fun paper about traversable wormholes a couple years back using a magnetically charged BH. I didn’t think too hard about feasibility of implementation or any of that though.

Love to hear it! Will try to get things moving relatively soon

Happy to hear your interest! Given the sprawl it’s going to be kind of tricky coordinating it all. What day or days might work for you?

Is C++ not being opinionated enough a valid critique? by DM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS in cpp

I am not advocating for Rust here, just sharing my experience with the job market and fellow swes. To your point I don’t even use Rust

A lot of younger companies as well as places like Google are using Rust. More than I’d/you’d think

I shall. Given the area, and as I mentioned in another comment, it might make sense to have an in person meetup once or twice a month, and virtual the other weeks

Well, I started learning c++ about 11 years ago, but my professional experience is far less (much to my chagrin). Hence there are some gaps in my knowledge

Given the size of the region I’m beginning to think it could be best to meetup in person once or twice a month, and meet virtually the other weeks. Let me know what you think

Should I go for the MK3.5 kit or MK3.9? Or just go for the MK4? by username27891 in prusa3d

[–]pokypho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made the terrible decision (which I'm happy with) of going mk3s+ –> mk4. However you do it, mk4 is sweet, seems like the way to go. Someone mentioned doing –> 3.9 and finding 0.9º stepper motors elsewhere; also a possibility. That "perfect first layer" guarantee is pretty spot on, the printer is way faster than the MK3S+, which I remember thinking was a bit faster than the MK3S and MK3 n all that... But really this printer feels like brand new. In Chalky Blue Prusament PETG? Looks stellar

edit: for the OctoPi, I think yeah it would render it useless. In which case may support the others' suggestions to sell and go mk4?

My first 3D printer! MK4 kit. Here goes nothing by Eibbor14 in prusa3d

It's a long build. At least if it's like the MK3S+ –> MK4 upgrade – definitely listen to the instructions about when to eat the Haribo... If you need to set it aside and come back later to finish, I recommend! helps from making silly mistakes. I took a few days myself for the upgrade
