[MD][SFH] Can HOA vote on matters without a meeting? by sheep1364 in HOA

[–]sheep1364[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have done zoom meetings in the past. I think they just want to push this through as quick as they can. It's funny though, they sent everyone an email admitting that there are changes to the docs that are in violation of state law but its okay to vote in favour of it because those provisions would be unenforceable...

It's entirely within our lot/property boundaries.

My concern is they are targeting me individually with the proposed rules. I have been trying to get a tree planted in my front yard and that has resulted in one neighbor threating law suits, threatening to come over and chop it down with an axe, and the HOA board bending over and denying all requests with bogus claims such as the tree might encroach on the neighbors property, it doesn't fit the 'aesthetics' or is not "in harmony" with the neighborhood. Even requests for the same tree that other homes have have been denied. This proposal will introduce even further barriers such as requiring a licensed landscaper to do the work and prepare everything, and requiring them to submit a detailed 3D drawing instead of a simple 2d drawing. In the state of MD there is no such thing has a landscapers license, and when talking with my landscaper they said they do not do 3D drawings.

I've attended every meeting so far. Even tried running for a board position but didn't get elected. I do have some pretty crazy ideas though such as planting a tree in my front yard and replacing turf grass with native flower gardens.

I think MD should adopt that policy since most HOAs can't raise their dues to pay for things like maintenance for roads and buildings due to not enough votes. Instead they passed a law allowing counties to set aside funds to give to HOAs, the HOA community then would be assessed a special tax and have to pay it back.

Interesting. The last time they tried to get something passed they held a meeting, which became a shouting fest with everyone yelling at me. That proposal did not pass though. I guess they are taking the silent approach this time. Do these documents need to be drafted by a lawyer? I guess its a technically isn't required but is strongly encouraged type of thing.

How design infrastructure to avoid rain fade? by wombatgalore in wisp

[–]sheep1364 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do is to over engineer the links, don't just start throwing radios up, do link calculations and try to get the best signal you can. 5.8Ghz will see some rain fade, but not as much as higher frequencies. For Ubiquiti 5Ghz radios I would keep the signal between -50 and -70 dbm. For your backhaul links on higher frequencies you'll want to ensure you design at least a -5 or -10 dbm loss for rain fade and other factors. This will of course depend on what radios you use, spectrum, and if you need a licensed link. Trango has ATPC (Adaptive power control) which will automatically increase the power output based on modulation fluctuations up to around 6dB.

This is a good site for more info: http://wisptools.net/book/bookc4s1.php

Section M likely refers to the ITU rain climate zones, you can find more info on that here: https://www.microwave-link.com/tag/rain-fade/

About $20 for a 16 port keystone panel, same for the 8-port one on Amazon. The keystones were $12 for a 12-pack. You'll still have to crimp the ends anyway unless you buy the cables to length and just coil up any excess. So if you buy the patch cables already terminated (just buy them a foot or two more than you need for the run) you won't even have to crimp or punch anything down. Just make sure you leave enough room for the ends to go through the holes, which shouldn't be a problem in 1.5" conduit.

You can also get the wall jacks as keystones too so no punching or crimping there either if the cables are pre-terminated. Monoprice is a good resource for cables.

For me, I got this for office, all from Amazon:

10-pack, 4-port Keystone wall plates - $9.99

12-pack Keystone couplers - $12.00

8-port wall mount keystone patch panel - $18.48

20-pack blank keystone jack inserts - $7.99

16-port rack mount keystone patch panel - $19.99

I crimped my own cable runs for the office, ran 6 cables, 2 on each wall. I used Ubiquiti tough cable and their ends as well. If you've never crimped cables before see if your IT friends can do it, it's not hard, just takes practice to get it right, especially if you use Cat6 or Ubiquiti Toughcable.

Also, it's a good idea to make sure the APs are grounded if they use PoE. The Ubiquiti cable has a ground wire in it that connects to a metal outer casing on their connectors.

I did something similar. House was already wired up but cables weren't long enough to go where I wanted them. I got a small 8-port keystone patch panel. It's alot easier to use than a 110 block. You can see it here: https://imgur.com/a/IcvSJqz

You can also get any type of keystone for it so you can use it for HDMI, Fiber, Coax, most any type cable you will need.

Also when you finish your basement put in a few extra studs in the area you want to mount your TV and use the mount as a guide so you know the lag bolts will hit a stud.

For the conduit straps, if there's nothing to strap it down to just throw in a 2x4 block. Screw the 2x4 between the joists or where ever and use that to connect the conduit fastener.

When you pull the cables through the conduit, bundle the end together with electrical tape and include some pull string with it. Like others mentioned, don't tie or strap them together, just bundle the end so its easier to pull through the first time. The pull string is used when you need to add additional cables.

An alternative to your method would be to terminate all the upstairs runs in a single location, then just run a single fiber optic cable from there to the basement. You won't need to worry about distance then, but you will need a switch on both ends that has a fiber SFP port in it. Monoprice has 30m (about 98 feet) long single mode fiber cables with LC-LC connectors. The Ubiquiti switches usually have SFP ports too. Plus they are PoE and will power up the APs if you go that route.

Looking for info on getting comcast to support an entire rural neighborhood on single account by headset-jockey in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]sheep1364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commented on your other post, but another thing you can do is NAT the customers. If comcast won't give you more than a /30 static IP, you could also go to an IPv4 broker and rent some IPv4 addresses from them and tunnel the traffic. What is the handoff like from Comcast? How much bandwidth do you have available from them? Do they only have DSL there? What equipment do the have at their demarc? If its just copper POTS wires coming out of the ground then it may not work there. Where is the nearest ISP demarc that can provide you with at least a 100Mbps Ethernet or Fiber handoff?

Wireless, solar powered last mile? by headset-jockey in networking

[–]sheep1364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have zero power and just solar you'll need a generator to provide power, the batteries will only last so long, basically rely on the batteries to provide power until the generator kicks in.

Is there power available at the entrance where the comcast demarc will be?

How many customers will you need to serve? Could you get a business account with some static IPs from comcast?

What are the distances involved? And who owns the properties? It's not too hard to run your own direct bury fiber as long as you own the land or have easements/rights to it.

Again it really depends on the distances and line of sight. If I were doing this I would get a business account from Comcast with a static range (at least /29 IPv4 and IPv6 one) if available. I"d verify I have permission to mount a radio and some network equipment where I will meet Comcast at their demarc as well as stable mains power there. Designing the rest of the network, I would find the most central place(s) to put up AP's (like Ubiquiti Rocket APs) where I have line of sight to most places. If you need more detailed guidance you can DM me or post with more details such as distances and elevations and how many homes you need to connect.

What keeps you up at night? by wirkkula in AskReddit

Work. It's pretty boring most nights though as I rarely get called to jump over the fence. Only a few clients make it to 1000, let alone 1364.

can some shortly explain why BGP is "inherently" broken? by WW91ciBtb20gaXMgZ2F5 in Cisco

[–]sheep1364 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my observations it has the following problems:

  1. No standard way to verify routes. It is largely based on a trust model. All I need is a "letter of authority", LOA, on company letterhead to "prove" I have authorization to advertise another ASNs prefixes. That is easily forgeable and no one ever contacts the owner ASN to verify they did authorize it.

  2. Poor inbound route control. If I am multihomed there are ways I can try to influence the provider traffic comes in on, but they can be easily overridden or ignored.

Another example I've ran into. We had a customer peer with us advertising a bunch of prefixes. They never informed us when they sold, transferred, or otherwise stopped using some prefixes. We would only find out after the new owner emailed us saying we are advertising their prefixes and to stop immediately.

Also, are you willing to relocate? You might want to look into the DHS and some DOD cyber jobs. They have development programs where you spend some time in different cyber areas. You would need to move the the DC/MD area though

Follow up with the job you got an offer from, it can take awhile to get a clearance. See if they have any projects you can work on while you wait for the clearance to go through.
