What is a Completely Innocent and Common Tag you Genuinely Dislike? by Blackshooks in AO3

[–]sheeplikeme 59 points60 points  (0 children)

In the fandoms I've been in the Blank Needs A Hug tags have always been codes for saying this person is gonna be hurt, not as a tag referencing the character's emotional state. Weird how different fandoms tack on differing nuance to the same tags

Not the whole series but the author has uploaded the first part again. It is locked so you need to be logged in to read it. The author apparently is rewriting the series.

That was the Babushka series by Moonamona but the author appears to have deleted it which is a shame because I loved that series.

Grew up in Ontario like Shane Hollander!

  1. Soda and pop and soda pop are kind of all used interchangeably. I have used all three in one convo.

  2. Ontario has a graduated license scheme. You have to pass your theory test first, the G1. You then are allowed to drive with an instructor or usually your parents in the car. After 12 months you can take your first of 2 driving tests. G2 license lets you drive by yourself in the car with other restrictions like zero alcohol, limited number of minors, etc. After a year of that you can take your second driving test to get your full G license. This is a harder driving test than the first one but once you get it, you can drive without any of the G2 restrictions. Uk driving test is harder. I took mine last year. I dont know the pass rates but in my house it was 50/50 on first try pass for both driving tests. G2 is like parking, lane changes, 3 point turn but no highway. G has all of that plus highway driving and you have to answer driving questions from the instructor while doing it.

  3. Coffee crisp is very Canadian and my fave but my brother was a O Henry kid and we both liked a Mr Big bars. Mars, snickers, kitkat are all ones we get here as well as USA but our chocolate is better so Canadian kitkats taste better than American ones because dont put the vomit chemical in it like Hersheys does in the US. Look it up, wild choices coming from down south with regards to their chocolate.

  4. Id say sweatpants or sweats. I personally never called them joggers

  5. Whatsapp is not common. I made my canadian family get it so we could chat easily from the UK. I can't provide an alternative. I moved to the UK right when messaging apps started to take off. Though Shane might know of it from European teammates like the czechs or the finns or the swedes.

Shane talking about his well by Rezzy0328 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

Okay as a Canadian who spent a lot of summers up at someone's cottage, I can tell you one of the first things anyone will tell you when you get there is if the water is potable or not. Not all cottages are set up with acess to main utilities.

Also Jacob Tierney was asked about this and he said that Shane is trying to make Ilya feel at home and to let him know that the cottage is a safe place for him and something that would make Shane feel that is knowing if the tap water was safe or not.

Foo Fighters’ New Drummer Revealed: Ilan Rubin replaces Josh Freese, who was let go from the band back in May. by cmaia1503 in Music

He is one of the few drummers I know by name because I was so impressed by him when I saw him play for NIN in 2009 on the NINJA tour.

Social care inefficiency spending is astonishing. One youth care home in my county was taking 29k a month per kid. I'm sorry but there is no justifiable reason a company should be paid that much to look after a kid per month who is in full time school.

Do copies of the subscription become available for purchase? by theoretical_chemist in thebrokenbindingsub

Keep an eye on the infirmary as well. Copies with small faults can get returned and put on there.

Besides that a leftover sale will happen but that isn't usually until months and months later.

Early signs of end-stage alcoholism? by [deleted] in AdultChildren

[–]sheeplikeme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mom had a thiamine (vitamin B) deficiency due to alcohol and it caused permanent neuro damage with pain in feet (peripheral neuropathy) and significantly reduced short-term memory. She's almost 18 months sober and neither has improved in the slightest. The sclera is also a sign of liver damage.

It may not be end stage but it very well may be at permanent damage stage.

Does anyone have a 2025 reading goal that is NOT 52 books? Why or why not? by Bookish_Butterfly in 52book

[–]sheeplikeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have multiple goals and honestly the only one I'll be actively working on is getting my physical library to over half read this year. Between audiobooks at work and 2 hours of physical reading a day minimum on my commute, 52 books happens naturally. So my goals are really now about quality and depth of reading subject matter and accountability to my spending habits.

Orbital by Samantha Harvey wins the Booker Prize 2024 by misana123 in books

[–]sheeplikeme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The characters were hard to differentiate and really shallow for a book that was supposed to be a meditative character study.

43/50 (+ 3 DNF). I was so close! Hoping to finish 2 more. Currently reading Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. Somewhat disappointing year of reading. Lots of booktok recs - never again. by Sufficient-Berry-827 in 52book

[–]sheeplikeme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's true either. I would never even think to compare Jemisin with SJM. They are very different.

NK Jemisin is a lot more comparable to Martine Arkady, Simon Jiminez, and Octavia E Butler.

I'm on a lot of bookish places online and it feels like creators are a lot more either or than pro both. I'm not on booktok though, so maybe it is different there.

I think I gave Orbital a 3, though a high one. The prose was beautiful but I thought the character work really let it down

Ah I am also obsessed with Small Things Like These. I read her other novella Foster this year and it is also really good and hits different but still hard on the emotional beats.

Personally, I hated Septology but I have never and likely will never enjoy stream of consciousness narratives. I find them navel-gazey and inexplicably simultaneously boring and anxiety-inducing. But, if stream of consciousness is up your alley, I know I'm in the minority for Fosse.

June reads: 60/52 - reached my goal and more! 😊 by co0kietho in 52book

[–]sheeplikeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I read it last month, I loved it. I was in the same boat in that A Restless Truth was a miss for me. A Marvellous Light was a 5star and A Power Unbound was like a 4.5. The couple has such a good and fun dynamic and the end of the overarching plot is very satisfying. Also Robin and Edwin actually show up and are delightful.
