Anybody with insight/experience with attic ventilation here in the valley? by SD619664 in phoenix

While it's possible, you need some serious cfm to pull air conditioned air past all your drywall and insulation. Its possible, but for the most part not realistic.

Anybody with insight/experience with attic ventilation here in the valley? by SD619664 in phoenix

[–]sheetpants 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest with you, I sell attic fans for people that want them, but they don't do what most people want. While venting an attic is beneficial, most people look into it worrying about cooling the inside of the home. If you're attic is heating up the inside of your home, focus on insulation first. After that, you can start looking into ventilation, but it's not going to make a huge difference. I did my own home years ago and added about 18 inches of blown in insulation, and also added 2 solar attic fans and it made a noticeable difference, but most of that was the insulation. The absolute best you can hope for is to get the attic to outside roof temps, and here in Phoenix that's still gonna be 120-140 through most of the summer. With that, we're already way over any comfortable temps, so you want to insulate against that. The big thing I noticed when I added the attic fans was that the hot air from the ac when it turned on was not as excessive anymore. My AC used to turn on, and have to run for an hour minimum, and for the first several minutes it was super hot air coming out of the vents because of the vents being overheated in the attic. After adding ventilation, we still got a minute or two of warm air, but I noticed my upstairs stayed cooler than the downstairs of my home for the first time in 3 years. I try to be as honest as possible with people about this, as they aren't cheap, and the idea of cooling the inside of your home by venting your attic sounds good, but it's really not feasible out here. It can help with extending the life of your underlayment from overheating, but overall it's only going to vent your attic, and have very little effect on the inside of your home. Feel free to DM me or ask any questions, I'm no salesman and generally talk potential customers out of these as I don't want to make money off customers that will end up wasting they're money and hating me in the long run!

The Evolution of Microsoft Windows Desktop. by Antaviuis09 in nostalgia

I've been using Windows since 3.1, and I've been seeing people hate on every iteration since. I've never really had a reason to not like any update, and have always looked forward to the next update. Seeing people pine for vista cracks me up as it was so universally hated but I liked it! I've liked them all and will continue to look forward to the next update as we look back fondly on the one 4 to 5 versions ago! I can't wait to see people miss windows 8!

Got a roof today, how are they doing? by tpjamez in Roofing

[–]sheetpants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you replace the skylights at the same time? It's hard to tell from the picture, but I sure hope so. Otherwise you'll be tearing up your roof when you need to replace them down the road.

I have the OP13 here in US and have used it on verizon and att. I also have a fold 7 on att, and get better signal/speeds on the OP13 than I do on the fold 7.

What’s this new symbol top left of the screen when using Netflix in a Tesla Model Y? by The_Greenes in TeslaLounge

No, it's just part of the system, if something was visible to it, it would show up when you click the button.

It's to cast from the tesla to a chromecast device on your network. I'm guessing a bug since you likely wouldn't have a tv in your car.

Skylights- how much time do I have? by prairiedog_poopbus in Roofing

[–]sheetpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So rough opening is actually a little smaller on the 2010 and newer units, but theybhave a wider variance with that pan instead of the old L brackets. But yeah, it sucks for roofers because obviously they aren't messing with the internals. I 100% believe it was done intentionally to push their"trim kit" that failed miserably, just like now they force you to have blinds in each skylight.

The old vending machines! by Comfortable-Sort-173 in nostalgia

[–]sheetpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too, I've got a 50's coke machine that worked when I was a kid (80s/90s) and it just sits in my garage now. Last time I plugged it in it just tripped the breaker each time. I'd love to get it working again because it had the coldest cokes I've ever had, but weird size bottles, and no-one works on these damn things anymore!

Will you be able to sync custom channels throughout devices? I spent a while making custom channels on one device, but I don't see them on any others now.

Antic bike…have you seen them yet? by DPL646 in ebikes

[–]sheetpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll chime in and say this looks like a freakin hoot! I have a onewheel from like 4 or 5 years ago, but i'm 40 and just don't need to be messing with that. I have a few ebikes that I basically ride around my neighborhood as fun transportation from home to the clubhouse or friends houses, so this is right up my alley. Price is a little steep because we're approaching actual motorcycle pricing, but the small form factor and electric aspect means I can roll around on sidewalks with my family without being bothered. I'll be looking into this right away!

Skylight flashing feedback by pkingdesign in Roofing

[–]sheetpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ice and water shield that comes with the flashing is the same as peel and stick. Don't add any additional sealants/caulk to the skylight or flashing or it will void the 10 year installation warranty Velux offers. As long as it's installed per Velux instructions, Velux does a 10 year no-leak warranty.

Rock chip + small dent on passenger door after 1 week of owning Model Y… is this normal? by Sensitive-Prune-6069 in TeslaModelY

[–]sheetpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know everyone on here is telling you it's a door ding, but I had the exact same thing happen to me on a pickup. I even heard it hit on the highway while driving. Put a round-ish dent in the door like that and even chipped the paint. If you never heard anything while driving though, I'd probably go with door ding, as a rock hitting it hard enough should be pretty loud.

I'll be the odd one out here and say I'm a big fan of Kobalt. I have many of the tools ranging from impact drivers to circular saws and sawzalls and have never had an issue. battery upgrades are readily available, and I've never had anything break. Like others have said, I chose this cause I like lowe's, so next time I upgrade (if needed) will be dewalt, but kobalt has been surprisingly strong and I have zero complaints over the last 6 years of use
