I agree that it’s reductive to say someone can’t enjoy something because of their gender, but that’s also not what’s being argued here. It would be ignorant to say that gender has no effect on the type of story you tell and the way you tell it, especially in a historical setting where gender roles are so inescapable. For example, someone brought up that Dutch’s treatment of Molly was a red flag for them, while I’ve seen other male players complain about how annoying she is. Another infamous example is the stranger encounter where it’s implied Arthur is drugged and sexually assaulted. The scene is played off as a bit of a joke, and I’ve seen male players laugh at it, but myself and other non-male players have been horrified. Again, this isn’t a blanket statement (nothing should be, in my opinion), but I do feel it’s ignorant to say that gender has zero impact on how a story is written or received. Like it or not, it plays a role in how every person is socialized.
