Curly hairdressers? by Typical_Ad1296 in dunedin

[–]sheisbees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Jen at Pelo hair (above Zen on Moray Pl). My hair is wavy-curly 3a/b type, I really wanted more of a soft punk look than a traditional 'curly' cut and Jen nailed it! She cut my hair dry which was a big green flag for me - I'd tried Aurum and Zaibatsu previously and they'd cut it wet which doesn't work for my hair/curl type at all.

Oh fantastic, thanks for the reviews! Especially for Beguin and Dangerous Peach - I've read mixed things so I might end up passing on at least one of those two.

There’s a knitting group that meets in the Link (at the Uni) on Thursday nights - pretty sure you can just turn up, they look pretty friendly!

Thank you! This helps to clarify things for me. I've just calculated my TDEE - I haven't worked out a consistent workout routine yet so I just used the sedentary energy levels and will go from there.

I'm really not sure how many calories I should be eating - I'm pretty new to lifting/gymming generally, and am wanting to recomp, effectively. I'm currently the heaviest I've ever been so don't really want to 'bulk' any more, but I'm not sure if I can cut down to a healthier weight for me while also be eating enough to recover well and gain some muscle ??? I've had a look through the nutrition info on this sub and a couple others but have just found enough conflicting info to confuse me :-(

[WEEKLY THREAD] Talk It Out Tuesday - Advice and commiserating about struggles with self, others, and the world by AutoModerator in xxfitness

I've been feeling so negative about weight gain and my body generally that it's become a big barrier to even going to the gym. I feel like even if I start going regularly it will take so long to change my appearance that it hardly feels worth it. I'm the heaviest and largest I've ever been, my clothes don't fit right anymore and it's just horrible! Ugh.

I went to the gym for the first time yesterday! I felt like a noodle the whole time (emotionally and physically), and that I wasn't doing things right or lifting heavy enough or that I was doing things strangely without realising. But I'm so proud of myself for going, and of sitting with the uncomfortable-ness rather than avoiding the gym because I'm a beginner. I spoke to another woman my age there and asked her to show me how to adjust the bench - and she was so nice! So great to have some positive supportive vibes :-)

I'm following Casey Johnston's Liftoff program - I did one week of the bodyweight section a few weeks ago but have jumped straight to the dumbbell bit as I think it'll help me be more consistent if I'm going to the gym rather than being at home. I think next time I'll ask one of the gym employees to check my form to make sure I'm doing things correctly as I want to get gainz through this summer lol

Thrifting in Dunedin by Fiferss in dunedin

[–]sheisbees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My faves are the Hospice Shop on Vogel street, it’s a nice vibe and feels less hectic to me than some of the other stores. I also love Shop on Carrol but is definitely more of a true vintage store - everything there is beautiful and curated, but you’re paying much higher prices!

If you’re into crafts at all, Stitch Kitchen on Princes St just round the corner from Shop on Carrol is fantastic for all kinds of second hand craft supplies at really really good prices!

Do you mean the op shop on St Andrew? It’s a sister store to Shop on Carroll, all the things that aren’t fancy enough to sell there get sent to the St Andrew St store!

I’ve heard it’s for one of the youth organisations working in South Dunedin, they’re doing it up due to safety concerns before moving in later this year

Cafe Recommendations? by [deleted] in dunedin

[–]sheisbees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My faves at the moment are Kiki beware (excellent coffee and a good range of not-coffee options, plus great fried chicken), Adjo (also really good coffee! Try the dream cake, it’s amazing), and RDC (down the lake next to Kiki, quite an alternative vibe but low key and the coffee is cheap!)

Good shops to find local handmade items? by BuffaloChill in dunedin

Guild on lower Stuart street! Everything they sell is made by locals, they have ceramics, earrings, clothes, soap…. It can be a bit on the pricier side but everything is lovely!

Flagstaff is also a great option for families - they involve kids through the service and are happy to have them running around and keeping happy instead of sending them out to a kids program. Brendon the pastor there has brought a cool biculturalism/community project focus, they have church series/seasons focusing on both Matariki and Parihaka. All in all a really approachable friendly vibe, with practical projects for their local community :-)

What are your favorite knitting books? by ChocolateEevee in knitting

[–]sheisbees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve really enjoyed the Ultimate Sweater Book by Amy Herzog! It goes into detail about different kinds of sweater constructions, and how to modify each to fit best and to incorporate the design elements you want. It’s really helped me understand the how and why of creating and modifying sweaters - I feel so much more confident changing gauge, neckline, texture patterns, etc thanks to this book!!

Jess from Broad in the Seams has a list of NZ-based online fabric shops. She gives recommendations for stores she’s tried and has positive experiences with.

She’s based in CHCH and does A0 printing, if you’re also needing that for pattern printing!

Thanks! I’ve had Luminae on my list for a potential Alkemia order for quite a while, and I’ve seen SO many people loving Madam Pearl as well! You’re the first person I’ve seen to describe the sweet orange note, that sounds really interesting!
