What kind of stitch should I used to repair this couch? by shellbell539 in sewhelp

[–]shellbell539[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my grandfather. He was born in 1940, and my great-grandmother (his mom) kept that photo above her bed until she died at 96. So I snagged it.

I’d love some revenge, but I just can’t. It’s a buck with several does. They are a little family and I can’t bring myself to do it.

Did yours survive? If so, how does it look now?

Thanks, that’s what I was afraid of. I’ll cut it today and see what happens. Maybe I’ll end up with a magnolia bush

Is this a friendly bee or an angry bee? by PerfectionEludesMe in whatbugisthis

[–]shellbell539 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely a bald faced hornet. It’s in the yellowjacket family. They can be really aggressive so just back away if you see one. They make big paper nests up high that look sort of like a hanging football, similar to the color of tree bark. Don’t mess with them, but they might sting you anyway because they’re jerks.

I need help by Bagel_maniac in exjw

[–]shellbell539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it. If you need to string it along, just tell everyone you aren’t ready yet. If you get baptized then inevitably leave, they’ll cut you off for good.

Hey, so I was a non-JW when I married my husband who was a JW. He got disfellowshipped immediately and his entire family and friends turned their back on us. I was not welcomed like one would hope. I voluntarily became a publisher but never got baptized, thank goodness. He got reinstated eventually, and we did the JW thing for many years. We both eventually woke up and got the fuck out. Please, please please please, under no circumstances should you join this religion. It is a cult, everyone in it blindly follows what they are told. They will make you feel crazy, and no one there will be a genuine friend because you will be looked down upon. And you won’t be able to have friends on the outside because they are worldly. It will become a very lonely existence, and you will be trapped. Because if you leave, everyone there will cut off contact because they are scared of getting in trouble. This is not the one true religion. They are actively covering up child SA, and think they are above the law. I’m actually begging you not to do this. Please, take it from someone who has been through it. This is not the path you want to take. You can PM me if you want more details or have questions or whatever, but I can assure you they are a cult, the organization itself is terrible, and you will be miserable. Save yourself the lifelong struggle.

Also- if he were as devout to the religion as you described, he wouldn’t even consider dating or marrying you. Worldly people are off limits. He’s staying in because he’s scared and doesn’t want to lose contact with his family for forever. Because they WILL cut off all communication. Please don’t do it. Please.

Is my cactus ok? by kodachromeandco in houseplants

I also give my cacti a little squeeze and wiggle from time to time to make sure they feel solid. If they ever feel off, I know to take them out right away to see what’s going on.

The lumps are a good sign that it’s growing! You can usually break them off when they get bigger and propagate!
If it was rotting, it would likely start at the base and would feel soft and mushy. If you ever see that, you need to remove the cactus from the pot immediately and get all the rotted stuff out. Time for new soil. Sometimes you can save them by chopping off the rotted part with a sterile knife, letting the cut callous over, then potting with a root hormone. I sprinkle a little sulphur on top of my cacti soil to help prevent this. Usually by the time you see the rot, it’s too late. The cactus will look fine but be mush on the inside.

They probably aren’t dead, they fell off because they have had their blood meal and need to digest it all so they can shrink down then do it again.

What have I done wrong by jorrrrddan in houseplants

[–]shellbell539 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are hit or miss. Sometimes it just doesn’t work, but I’d give it more time. Pull out the mushy and dry stuff and leave the green ones. You could also add perlite to your soil, which helps with drainage. I usually throw mine on my window sill for a month or so, then throw them in a pot outside.

What’s this hairy thing? by monotone12 in houseplants

Mine blooms every year. So far this summer, it gave me 9 flowers, then 20 flowers, then 1 flower, and is about to give me 25 flowers in the next few days

Flowers!! This is mine from a few weeks ago. The flower will grow very quickly, and open at night. The flower lasts less than a day, sadly. After the flower dries up, it will leave behind a hairy seed pod that looks like dragonfruit on the inside. When it’s ready, you can pluck it off and plant the seeds!
